Until they broke up right at the end of TBC, there was a guild on my server with the name 'Heal me for F sake' with a guild for their alts and people not yet 70 called 'Boost me for F sake'.

My alts joined a friend's guild, <revengeofthefallen>. I wouldn't have minded the name
for my Horde
characters, since that would make sense. But this was for a group of Alliance characters, which sorta lost me. (The lack of spaces was off-putting as well.)
Like the OP, I get irritated with guild names that try so incredibly hard to be epic with words like "heroes" and "legends", etc. Personally, I like guilds that try to reference in-game things like <Order of Azora>.

When my friends and I formed this guild, we were concerned with looking like clichéd idiots. We wanted something strong and respectable. We wanted something amusing and serious. We didn't want to be cheesy. We didn't want to sound like we were trying hard, and EVERYONE had input.
Eventually we decided a good way to name a guild in a way that is generally ambiguous, straight-forward and simple, is to name it after an animal. An animal and a color. You can use the color and the animal to make a reference to something else too. As many members were fans of the drink, we went with <Grey Goose>.

For me it's funny when a guild is named after its guild master. The guy's name was something like Discerax and the guild was called <Disciples of Discerax>.

I had some thoughts about making a guild called <Obesity> just to fit in.
A+
