Hard drive failure?

For the last month or so the computer has been making a clicking noise now and then and when it does the computer would freeze up for a second. Now I do know that this is the sign that my hard drive might be dead soon. I have prepared for this by backing up certain things so really I am just waiting on it to go.
Well today I
think
it happened, the OS would start up but when I click on anything at all it would freeze and would be forced to do a shutdown. When it did freeze the hard drive would make a single click noise then the computer is unresponsive. I am able to go into safe mode though and can do anything I want that I can do in safe mode. So is this most likly a hard drive failure? I cant think of anything else that could really cause this.
Thanks for you time and help to those that respond.
