She's never wanted to be a sexual object.
She did. I'm pretty sure she said so in an interview in her younger days. Though I think the words she used was "symbol", not "object".
You northernhemispherians are so uncomfortable with sexuality and physicality it's hilarious.
But I feel I must explain myself: I do not know Angelina Jolie personally, and, aside from her record of B- movies I have no formed opinion of her personality, for all I know, she could be a total &*!@#. She is presented to me as a celebrity, therefore more of an object than anyone else (once again, we're all objects, read Kant). I cannot sympathize with her sorrow, though I doubt she feels actually feels much because of the cancer in itself; in this scenario, it would more likely be because she has mutilated her natural body.
She has a body (and once it was beautiful, though I suppose that's opinion), to ignore this would be to ignore reality.
Also, I love how you both disagree with me but still fight amongst each other.

Not to mention she is still beautiful, well anyone alive is more beautiful than a dead person, but whatever..
This is so insensitive to all the families of people who have died of cancer. Imagine how they feel when you explain how their loved one wasn't beautiful, simply because maybe they were too scared to do what Jolie so bravely did. Intimidating women into doing what you think they should do isn't the way to help women at all. Fear and insults don't go far in the world of tolerance and culture, Elura.

We are talking about the issue in the context of women, as breast cancer is drastically over represented as affecting women.

I think this is most likely the result of an action of a small faction within the administration than an overall reflection of it.
A "symbol" in entertainment isn't the same as being reduced to a sexual object. If she was grinding on me naked, it wouldn't make her an object.
Besides, even if this was the case, taking something she did when she was 19 to excuse comments she gets at 35 or however old she is and a mother of 6, is simply "silly".
And I would assume her sorrow is more so linked to losing her mother at a young age and possibly giving the genes to her children. But yes losing a part of your body must be hard, but it's worth it if you get to stay alive for twice as long and be with your children.
Not to mention she is still beautiful, well anyone alive is more beautiful than a dead person, but whatever.
And I don't argue with you because I know you and you are just being you.
We're all objects, about this I am not kidding.
She's 35? Holy @#$%, I thought she was way older than that. I suppose that's why you shouldn't do drugs, kids.
And yes, unfortunately, you do.

Agreed. Just thought I'd add some joviality to the subject.

Whenever I try to do that it just ends in a flame war and I get banned, so count yourself lucky.

A woman took a perfectly sensible decision, based on medical evidence, to have her breasts removed. She is a public media figure, so she has made a very sensible comment on the situation. Big deal.
If I were told I had the same risk of testicular cancer, regardless of my lifestyle choices, I'd have my testes removed. I've known several people who've died of cancer, and its awful. I'd still be a man. Nobody would want my comment, because I'm not famous. That's the only difference.
Whether either of us was considered to be, or wanted to be a "sex symbol", is entirely irrelevant. Whether somebody sees a person as an object says an awful lot more about lack of empathy/sociopathic spectrum tendencies than anything else.
If you were a testicle model in movies, and the camera constantly did closeups of your testicles, peeking out of your underwear, and women went to movies specifically to see your testicles, which you used to make your career, and you were voted sexiest man alive because of your testicle closeup, and then you had your testicles removed, you could expect some women to say "dawww, gonna miss those testicles". Not to say objectifying your testicles is morally right, it is just to be expected at that point. THAT would be an accurate portrayal of Jolie's position. It would be like going to a pyromaniac's convention doused in gasoline tossing books of matches to people. I'm not saying that burning anyone alive is an acceptable action, ever, but what did you expect to happen? I think just as much should be said about women objectifying themselves as there is said about men objectifying women, which are both equally immoral, in my viewpoint. What truly bothers me about all this is when women are hold responsible for objectifying themselves, they are called "empowered", and the person who decries it is a misogynist, but when men are held responsible for objectifying women, that is morally superior. I think Jolie is a pretty disgusting role model, and her movies are pretty uninteresting. She made a decision to undergo a preventative surgery. The only reason that is "brave" is because she is removing the things that she uses to get a leg up in the movie industry. I think it's an intelligent move of her, if her doctor recommended it. Beyond that, it isn't "brave" to come out and say that's what she did. I don't even see how it matters at all. Because she set the example for women everywhere? She should have started doing that years ago by not portraying herself as a sexual object, encouraging men everywhere to look at her as nothing more than an object of sexual desire. She isn't a good role model, mastectomy or not.

her own weaknesses
Calling her actions a "weakness" is pretty crass, considering the woman is struggling with the possibility of cancer. I'm willing to criticize her past actions, but I draw the line at questioning her medical decisions.

I don't understand what you are saying here Mytie. Can you expand on it?
I feel like Elura was saying "her own weakness" because the surgery she undertook leaves her in a vulnerable state. People know what she looks like, and now they have another mental image of her, which she does not want.
Cheers,
