Does anyone here know much about these events?

Not much beyond what's already been posted in the article and the involvement of anonymous. Which I found odd, since its the sort of thing /b/ would support.
Here
's the SDMB thread on the topic. From there...
Apparently evidence was destroyed in the sheriff's office,
The
New York Times
article has a pretty illustrative quote.
“The rape was just an excuse, I think,” “What else are you going to tell your parents when you come home drunk like that and after a night like that?”“She had to make up something. Now people are trying to blow up our football program because of it.”

I saw a video of it on Facebook - they showed a picture that was posted to Instagram of them carrying the girl by the arms and legs, and a video of the boys laughing and making jokes about how drunk she was. It was heartbreaking.

Seeing as we haven't had a new article in a while, here we go:
eating cake increases the likelihood that you will be found guilty
. Only if you're a woman, though.

What? Why would someone study something like this? We could have cured cancer aids and MDRTB and colonized the moon if silly stuff like this stop get funding.
Actually, people study things like this to help reduce the likelihood that an innocent person goes to jail just because they're overweight. My girlfriend submitted an honours thesis on the ability of witnesses to accurately identify or reject people based on their clothing and accessories and whether they're displayed in a line-up or just given a photo to say yes/no.
I don't think it's that trivial a context, to be honest.(##RESPBREAK##)8##DELIM##Squishalot##DELIM##

So....
Philadelphia highshcools now started installing Condom dispensers
I can't quite decide if that's funny or sad.
If they ever did that in venezuela, within 48 hours a select group of students would hog ALL of the free condoms, emptying the machines the moment they're filled, and would then sell the condoms on the schoolground or on the street to make a quick buck. I wonder if that's what's gonna happen in the US as well.

There were free condoms available in a music store I went into in PA. I think it works like a tip plate, the social expectation is enough that people don't just take them all.

The article is confusing correlation with causation. Most of the "liberal" cities are much larger in population than the "conservative" ones on the list. Due to higher population and more people in poverty, larger cities tend to have higher crime rates. For them to conclusively say that either liberal or conservative cities are more violent, they would have to pair up a city representing each party that would be in similar economic situations. This would remove the variable that poverty introduced.

The article is confusing correlation with causation.
No it isn't. It's pointing to a correlation. It doesn't pretend to know what the causation is. The last paragraph of the article explains that there are many possible causation, and that the true causation remains a question.
Although, I do find when a statistic is unflattering, people immediately cite lack of proof of causation. It's reflexive, even if there has been no causation insisted upon. It's a subtle strawman. Suggesting that a causation was cited when there wasn't one.
The fact is, cities that are more liberal, tend to have drastically higher crime rates. That's a statistical fact. Why? We could suppose causes all day long, but the fact remains true.

The point is, when you don't pick and choose the cities in you take your data from, the results aren't as swayed as you believe them to be. Its not a true correlation, there are cities that vote Republican with high crime rates, yet they are excluded from the article.

Again, you are incorrect. I'm wondering if you read the article. To paraphrase, they accounted for all cities in the US, and took the 10 who had the highest per captia rate of voting for Bush, and the 10 who had the highest per capita rate of voting for Kerry, and then compared crime data. They didn't arbitrarily pick cities to represent each side to fit their agenda.
I'd wonder which cities are Republican that you feel have as high of a crime rate as Detroit, which, I believe, has the highest per capita violent crime rate in the entire country, and also is the highest rate of voting D in the country. I suppose that's just completely coincidence though... amirite?
