Run HCs with your guildies. If you DPS even with something like 1k to 1.5k (can easily be done in quest gear) your group can be any HC without problems.

Dont be like 50% of the population that try piggyback their way through teams and raids - do quests and instances for gear when you lvl - continue to clear northrend for quests after hitting 80. Do normal instances untill you can carry your own weight in a dungeon.
While I do agree with this in general, don't be afraid to jump into raiding as Cat DPS, even in subpar gear. DPS is pretty easy, in that your only responsibility is usually to hit the boss and keep yourself alive. The main reason for this upcoming 3.2 nerf in Cat DPS is because Cat's are a tad Overpowered right when they ding 80 atm (The reduction in 'base values' will impact fresh 80's the most.)
The main reason I advocate this is because: if you read these forums, and you spec / glyph correctly, and play correctly, you can roll into Naxx 25 in Average iLvl of like 160 and easily pull over 2000 dps. (I would hardly call this piggybacking) My first Naxx 25 run I did nearly 3k dps average, and I was in mostly Quest gear from Zul'Drak (!) and a couple inexpensive BoE's (I was using the Amphitheater of Anguish polearm unenchanted, for example) .
Now I'm not saying that 2000 dps is amazing, but its pretty respectable compared to what they would probably expect from someone in that gear level, and probably comparable to what some of the more casual DPS in your guild (Geared or not) probably pull.
If your committed to staying pure-tank, then I would suggest you Wintergrasp a lot, Argent Tournament a lot, and watch the AH for BoE gears (Titanium Earthguard, Trollwoven, Polar, etc)
Edit: Also, go buy
Idol of Perspicacious Attacks
right now if you don't have it.

in a naxx HC, I do call it piggyback if you pull off 2K dps tbh, same as going into a HC and not even pulling off 1500 dps
2k dps was THE number to shoot for for nax 25 when we were first tossing numbers around when Nax was the latest and greatest... It's nothign to sneeze at for a starter comming into the game...

Fair enough, your entitled to your opinion, but in our Naxx25 runs (my guild is obviously not very hardcore) we usually have a few over 3k, and everyone else somewhere between 2k and 3k. Meaning if a fresh 80 Feral rolls in and does even 2.1k, they'll blend right in. With a little skill, 2.1k should be easy. Obviously your guild isn't like mine though, so.... yeah.
