Dont forget to run the regular 80 dungeons at least once to patch up any weak spots in gearing. Halls of Lightning, Utgarde Pinnacle, Culling of Stratholme, (Ill forgive you for skipping Oculus). These bosses all drop excellent level 78 blue items and typically by the time you run 3-4 runs of these instances (not each, but totally) you'll have your gear in good enough shape to start tackling the easier heroics.
Be honest with your capabilities but be confident you can succeed. Best of luck!

Your best bet would probably be to lead your own heroics that way you can pick the people you run with rather than them picking you.
This works to a certain extent. I know when I join Heroic Pugs I generally do a quick gear check on at least the tank or healers. You can even see quickly by how much mana the healer has. If the healer has 14k mana and is covered in greens, less than 1k SP, then I generally try to find another group.
Don't be lazy, BoE's are pretty cheap and are very powerful in starting heroics. Even getting a full set of Ornate Saronite gear will make your job healing so much easier. If you don't want to buy the gear off the AH, get the materials and find a friendly blacksmith to craft it for you.
