All i can tell you is that in my raiding on my hunter there was only 2 or so mages from my guild that could out DPS me as survival.
I now have a 79 mage that will probably never see a raid, but im ok with that, i just leveled it to have fun, oh and also, there are some boomkin druids that can out DPS a mage and a hunter, so don't worry about the DPS, just pick something you have fun with and roll with it, except a DK, ugh...

Hunter out bests mage dps.

Gentlemen
Hunter always out bests mage dps.
I don't even know how to respond to this...
When it comes to dps the major factors are going to be gear and skill, if you don't have one or both of those you'll be out done every time by someone who does. Mages can out dps Hunters, Hunters can out dps Mages.

during the heroic instence runs and raids I found myself always second on the dps meter. The first one is the hunter so I said it.
just saying it according to my experience. =S

This.
It all depends on player skill, gear and your talent spec. You can do a lot of DPS as a Mage. You can do a lot of DPS as a Hunter. You can do a lot of DPS as any DPS class if you know what you're doing. So what it really comes down to is; What class would you prefer to play?
Try a Hunter. See if you like it. Make a Mage and see if you like it. Play whatever class suits you and go from there. There is a wealth of knowledge on the Wowhead forums to play any and all classes well. It all comes down to how you want to play the game.
Also, Hunter's can resurrect their pet to full health, instantly, if their pet is talented to have Heart of the Phoenix. (

).
Hope that helps.

There is a reason why you will never hear the term "magetard" but you will hear "huntard".
Actually, it is "Castard" and it is used quite frequently on my server.
Much of the top end dps is gear and rotation dependent though with rare exception, the hunter will out dps a mage. A hunter's freeze trap is good but can no compare to the mage sheep for crowd control. Situationally, Frost Nova is generally more useful than Frost Trap though each have their specific place.
Hunters have the ability to shift some of their threat to another raid member by way of Misdirect as do rogues with Tricks of The Trade. In our guild UL25 raids, rogues and hunters top the dps charts for overall damage and dps.
