Where do they get the info for how many people are living in these settlements, villages and towns?
For example:
Hammerfall
, how do they know there are 600 members of the Horde living there?

It's mainly the RPG books, the lore ones dont say much about population, except for like "so-many died here, so many died there." type thing.

Ok. I've never messed with anything beyond the RTS games and WoW so I had never seen anything to point to a population of theoretical inhabitants. The thing that gets me now, is that there is next to no housing. That's probably just a gameplay thing, though.

The final fantasy games have always done it best heh. Usually they dont have more npc's then houses.

See, FFXI did this well because of "zoning." At the end of the zone leading to your home, you could see what look liked a street leading into a residential zone. Not much to render, but it explained where everyone lived.

Well I was talking more the console then FFXI but okay heh.

Haha, I haven't played a console game recently enough to remember. Though I do remember VII having a lot of high rises in the town where you get the airship.

Yeah Midgar was a massive sprawling city, even if you only got to explore like a 10th of what you actually saw.

I remembered the name Midgar but I thought you met Cid and got the airship in another town--Niefflehelm was Tifa's hometown so that isn't it... Gah! I can't remember the name of the town, but I don't think it was Midgar.

Heh, actually it was just Rocket Town, fairly small, the big metroplis were Midgard and Junon.

Rocket Town, go figure. Haha.
I just remember that scene where you're sneaking down the street to where the ship's parked and you're going by huge housing complexes.

Haha, no shame. We're on a WarCraft forum. No one's allowed to use the word nerd here.
Oh, and VII was an awesome game--though I liked Squall more than Cloud.

Lol, never let the FF fantics here you say that, they'll tar feather and cook you like a christmas goose. But yeah, only way wow could actually show the massive populations that are the towns, would be to instance them all, cause there would be no other way to get it in, it would just be giant towns and little pieces of questing area heh.

Heh, the could bar them off somehow, like with the gates during CoT:Stratholme. Y'know how you can see other areas in the city, but can never get there?

lol like they are guarding the inhabitants
Someone calls out to you "Please Brave adventurer they keep us captive in this city they keep us in massive pens with armed patrols around the clock and aerial watchers, free us please!" And that is how it would seem if they had "gates"
Ha! Fair enough. I don't really care about it; that was just a random suggestion off the cuff.
