I've never seen a female playing a male character, and yet...

... so very many males opt to play female characters. Why do you think this is? I'd like to figure out exactly what makes the ratio so skewed.

I once rolled a male Tauren just because they have better voice acting than a female.
Eh, but then I deleted him. :S

Most women I know who play WoW only roll one character. However most guys I know have 4+, including myself. That is the main reason IMHO.
Of my 8 toons, 4 are male and 4 are female...and I can't really say I have a preference; I generally choose sex based on how I want play my characters. Based on how I play Pally I can't see myself playing a male, likewise based on how I play warlock I can't see myself playing female.

One reason for me: Blood elves were my favourite race, and they unfortunately only have a female option. >_>

I'm too cheap to pay for a sex change for my female undead priest but I personally absolutely LOVE male undead caster animations. I regret rolling female. I don't think all girls want to play female characters necessarily.

I've been told that it's easier to find help--whether it's in the form of gold, items or time--if you're female. Which makes sense. Guys are instinctively geared to help (protect) females in hopes of payment in the form of sex. I realize this is online and (hopefully) there will be no sex involved but your subconscious, under-developed but still present brain doesn't know this. The males rolling female classes have figured this out and are exploiting that subconscious drive of the men playing the game with them.
Edit: Got off on a tangent and forgot the original point... talk about under-developed. But anyway, the reason you don't see as many females playing males is that this doesn't work in reverse. Women don't feel the need to protect men. Even if they did there's so few females playing this game that it wouldn't be very advantageous. So, why would a girl play a guy and get little to no help when she could play a girl and get a lot more help?
TL;DR:
Guys are aware of the fact other men will help them if they think they're female and they exploit this.

I am female (omg!) and I have 10 toons, 3 of them 80's and all of them are female. (and on a side note: i tank, heal, melee dps and caster dps)
i never rolled a male toon simply because i don't like the way most of them look. particularly the facial graphics. bleh.
and the guys i do know that have female toons say that either they didn't like the way the males of a certain race looked, but liked the female version, or the typical: "if i'm going to stare at a toon's butt all day, it's gonna be female" answers.

I do notice people are nicer and help me more on my priest though.
Thanks for making my point!

Since I failed at quoting, this is in response to Faceofwind.
Anyway, I have to say that the human male faces are God-awful. At best they look like cavemen. I managed to find one for my human warrior I'm ok with, but that's only with the right combination of hair and beard--change anything and... ugh.

I'm female, and my
current
main is also female... but I have several male characters. There was no rhyme or reason as to why I picked male characters. I liked the character models when I was playing around with the character generator, so I went with it.
Most people seem to assume I'm male regardless of which character I play (until they hear me on vent), and I'm fine with that. People do treat you differently when they think you're female, but it's not just helping out/gifts/all the other excuses. Apparently some would believe that having a certain extra appendage makes one a better, more competitive gamer. Any girl that plays is only there because her significant other does, she's only in a decent guild because she's flirting with the guild leader, and she only has gear because everyone else carries her. Or she's just a hideous pigbeast in real life. I enjoy proving those people wrong.
I know several women who play male characters. I think there are a lot more than you realize, they just don't feel the need to advertise their sex.
