the one time i took notes i found the % in menethil harbor is as follows, and i'd guess it's the same where ever you find these fish.

this is over five 15 minute sessions, each session counted with a 15 minute bauble. at what level skill i can't recall. but it gives you an idea of the rarity of FFsnap. and how much time it'll take you to catch what you want. all these numbers also show how i have far too much time on my hands, and why i've only reached level 29 in 3 months. (p.s. my cooking is also at level 225)

This doesn't show it, but there is also an Enchanting recipe that uses Fire Oil:

Enchant Cloak: Lesser Fire Resistance
Requires (140)
Permanently enchant a cloak so that it increases resisance to fire by 5.

So one day I was bored and actually wanted to see how often I could catch firefins and blackmouths... So here is what I caught after 20 minutes of fishing on the Menethil docks:

29% - Blackmouths: 12
9% - Firefins: 4
62% - Other: 26
Total Fish: 42

This was with my fishing level effectively around 170
(skill was 120 + nightcrawlers)

So unless someone knows of a hotspot for firefins, I'd say it'll take you quite a while to make significant amounts of fire oil.

Just as a side-note, Oily Blackmouths were going for about 2 gold per 10 when I checked the AH. Which means if I sat there and fished for an hour or so I could make a nice round 10 gold between the firefins and the blackmouths.

Your fire oil ability is in a different section from most of your alchemy recipes. Look in your alchemy explorer window. YOu probably already learned it.

For those who don't know, you can click on the "Firefin Snapper" icon or text to get a drop rate in all areas. Note, however, that while Stonetalon has the highest drop rate, that is due to many people EXCLUSIVELY fishing firefin schools, as pointed out by some of the helpful threads there. Your best bet is to either check the %ages or just run around looking for schools of the fish.

Generally you'll make more money if you have a friend make these into fire oil first, or do it yourself if you have alchemy.

You can also find schools of these all along the southern shores of hillsbrad, along with oily blackmouth schools.

Yes, I accidentally fell in. But I swam by a school. So I climbed partway up the ramp, whipped out my big iron, buffed it with an aquamatic, aimed for the center of the surface swirl, and got 10.

I usually catch these in the wetlands, off to the side of the dock. There are always firefin snapper schools there as well as oily blackmouth schools.

I've had the best luck in the Wetlands with lower fishing skill (low 100s) / character level (20s), but the schools there usually only yield about 3 fish. Once your character is in the mid-30s, get some bright baubles and fish the length of the west coast of Stranglethorn Vale. The Firefin Snapper Schools there gave me at least 6 firefins each, and you'll level up your fishing pretty quickly, too. Once you hit skill level 150, go to Old Man Heming in Booty Bay and buy the Expert fishing book. You'll be able to keep leveling towards 225, and can eventually catch firefins to your heart's delight without investing in any more worms or baubles.

And in my experience, fire oil is much more valuable than the fish. So be an alchemist or make an alchemist friend.

I've found that sitting under the docks in Southshore is a good place. There's usually 3 spawns of schools and it varies between oily blackmouth and firefin snappers - both good for my alchemist. Once the schools are done just waste some time and they'll be back again.

I was around 80-90 fishing skill when i started here.

Bonus: Since SS is always under attack when you're sitting under the docks fishing the horde usually don't notice you so there's nothing to worry about. After an hour of fishing through constant level 70 attacks I was only killed once.

That doesn't mean I don't help take them out but my little 29 warlock can't do much against a 70. :)

You can't buy Fire Oil from a vendor but a mid lvl alchemist can make it for you. Try /say LF Alch. WTB Fire Oil.
