Name Reservations Included Overly Restrictive Name Check But Fix Incoming

Posted 3 days ago by Squishei

In WoW Forever, we’ve been working on the restricted name list, which is a list the game uses to check for non-profane names that we wish to restrict, such as major Warcraft lore characters or names that are blocked for technical reasons.

Today we’ve determined that we have a bug in the process that caused the game to be overly restrictive with some names. For example, it has been incorrectly restricting names containing “c-o-n”.

With the next realm restarts in each region, we’re going to implement the fix. Afterward, if you previously received a message that said “That name is restricted” for a name that you think should have been allowed, please feel free to try again.

Thank you!

This whole name reservation thing was a #$%^ show!

Yeah, banning names using the word "con", "nom", "roi", etc. in it is crazy when they are allowing people to use the name Youtube, Utube, Yt, Prime, Twitch, Twitchtv, Tv, Stream, Streamer, etc. ban those instead please.

I have like sixty toons, and they're all named after authors and poets, and I've been wanting #$%^inson (after Emily) for literal years and they won't let me have it because they say it's pornographic. :(

AND the name I did want was taken, and I logged on literally as soon as it popped up today at 4 PM EDT!

So... Hopefully stuff like the word "Grom" can actually be used in last names. Hell even first names. It means Giant/Giant's in Orcish. Even stuff like Gromgol should be allowed.

Hope these can be a little more flexible, example: there is a friend who has a nickname wich is inspired by Grommash Hellscream, he has this name on battle.net and retail for more than 15 year, but as his name involves part of Grommash name, it says that is restricted, we have tried dozens of variations, and we concluded that if the name involves "Grom" in any part of the name it gets restricted, examples: Grommal, Thargrom, Nargrominn, check the names, all of them has "Grom" even if its in the middle, in the start or at the end, it all gets restricted, this is some dumb restriction, this is just an example, but we can check the Blizzard forums and we have hundreds of examples similar to this, hope they limit the restriction only for exactly copies of the original famous names.

Just when I thought they couldn’t have bungled this anymore than they already did. Although I have to admit at least part of the reason why they went overboard with this were probably the absolutely vile names weirdos came up with in the first few days of the Beta. I mean that was some truly atrocious stuff.

Someone stole my author name I use on CurseForge for my addons with Developer as the last name… low key upset over this.

“You whispered me in-game and gave me a virus.” Discord messages incoming.

Paladin and Hunter don't work, but Priest does. Make it make sense

I can't get my usual name Twinbraid for my dwarf because it contains "raid", I guess? Can we not do that, please?

And yet, I got the name Peepee Poopoo

This is good. For some reason "none" was banned and that was in the middle of my name. Took a lot of trial and error to even be able to tell what was being banned. I just wish they told us when the realm restart was expected.

I had the name Sunknight in Season of Discovery but its restricted for having Knight in it for Forever.

Blizzard didn't mention it in the post for some reason, but the realm restarts to implement this fix are taking place on October 28th at 7:00 AM (PST)...so just a few hours from now.

I hope this change allows some of you to get the names you want <3

I feel bad for the ppl who had something like "con" in their name that they have had for 20 years and there is nothing dirty/toxic about it

Comment by Riketta

What about "warden"? E.g. Dawnwarden...

-reads above comments- I'm fairly certain I know some of you from the forum post

We also discovered that loads of french versions of titles were being caught.

So people couldn't have Ducky or varinets because "duc" was duke.
Roi was being caught for being french for king.
Surprisingly Lady was banned but Dame/Madam was fine

I still think certain names should be allowed because they use it for normal purposes and blizzard just outright bans them.

Like if someone types a name of an old legendary hero or villain in a show or book and the name is so weird it catches an eye from bliz because other see it and they understand it as something else and it gets flagged as inappropriate.

Guessing little Tom still works at the company after that massive blunder lol

jokes aside, totally insane for this to be a problem to begin with, this company has been making the world's most popular MMORPG since 2004, surely some of that experience should translate over to this game?
I lost most of my names either to a restriction or to a several hours delay on the opening of name reservations, and we're still on this insane walk-on-eggshells mentality internally.
Should people even show up for launch? Probably safer to sleep through it and give them a good 6~12h to figure it out.

Here's hoping they make Grimtotem available for use.

Blocking last names like 'Wrynn', 'Whisperwind', and 'Menethil' is one thing cause those are family names... but Grimtotem is the name of an entire tribe...

(And yet I saw plenty of long lost brothers/sisters of the Wrynn, Whisperwind, and Menethil families on the beta cause they weren't blocked. Go figure.)
