Ask the Devs #10: Damage Dealing
Another couple of weeks have rolled by, and another set of questions has been answered by the Blizzard developer team. Last time it was all about tanks, but this week DPS specs and characters can rejoice, because they are in the spotlight. Some of the more interesting questions cover things like DPS warriors and Frost Death Knights building up threat too quickly and whether this will be addressed in the future; ingame damage meter similar to Recount and Skada; positional requirements for some abilities, and whether they are a mechanic that has no place in the Cataclysm raiding environment. Read the full post for even more interesting questions!
The new "assist" pet stance added in 4.2 would work very well with fire totems - is there any reason why totems were specifically excluded from that functionality? – Korghal (NA/ANZ)
We’d love to have Searing Totem use the new assist stance, but we felt it was too risky to just flip that switch without a great deal of testing. True pets have a control bar so it’s possible to override their behavior if the default behavior is something you don’t want. That’s

Patch 4.2: Achievement Guide for the New Dailies
Similarly to the
Call of the Crusade
patch during the last expansion, 4.2 introduces a big and unique ingame event, full of quests, dailies, achievements, and rewards. And while many players remember the Argent Tournament with dread because of its numerous dailies and boring jousting, the Regrowth and Molten Front experience bear only a small bit of resemblance with the Icecrown event.
Most notably, the Firelands invasion achievements are greater in number and better in quality than the Tournament ones, the rewards are more useful and fun, and the dailies are more versatile. This is Wowhead's guide to them, for those who like to get their achievements done quickly and painlessly when patches hit!
Achievements
This is the very first stage of the dailies and it takes place strictly in the Regrowth. You need to be eligible to start the dailies' prerequisites (i.e. to have completed
El milagro de Aessina
), and you need to do the short pre-req chain terminating with this quest.
Y los mansos heredarán Kalimdor

Ask the Devs #8 Answered, Next Topic is Tanking
And here comes the latest Ask the Devs rubric we'll see for a long time.
The Firelands
. If you have submitted any questions regarding the new bosses, T12, the daily quest hubs in Hyjal and the Firelands, or just about lore, here's your chance to see them (or ones like them) answered. Some of the more interesting questions inquire after that Abyssal Maw dungeon Blizzard promised us a while back (we are not getting it), raid balance and boss mechanics in the Firelands, and even a little bit of lore to make those of us into that kind of thing very happy.
Ask the Devs #9 was
just announced
, and its topic will be
Tanking
. The official thread for it will come a little later today, so get your questions ready!
Welcome to the answers thread for our World of Warcraft "Ask the Devs" global Q&A. These answers are in response to the round #8 questions, which can be seen here:

An Epic Anniversary
There isn't much I can say about this - the title is self-explanatory. Our lovely Blizzard is no longer a teenager company, and is only one year away from legal age (in the US). I am not sure what the implications of that are, nor am I sure whether all of them can be considered legal, but the facts are here. And, as it's starting to become common, Blizz did a mini-site for the anniversary - you check it out along with the big announcement below:
http://us.blizzard.com/en-us/company/about/b20/
In 1991, three guys fresh out of UCLA decided to start their own game company. Their goal: make cool games and have fun doing so. Twenty years later, the company has become a world-renowned game developer and publisher, with offices across the globe and millions of players enjoying its games in more than a dozen languages.
In 2011, Blizzard Entertainment marks its 20th anniversary. Over the course of the year, we'll be celebrating two decades worth of games along with you, the community of players who made it all possible through your passion, enthusiasm, and support. Moonkin Hatchlings & Lil' Ragnaros Preview
Note
: The latest Beta build introduced an interesting uncategorized spell -
Moonkin Hatchling Passive
. Its effect is to cast
Moonkin Hatchling Flower
once every 3 minutes, which in turn summons
Flor silvestre
. Just sayin'...
Remember the
Moonkin Hatchling
(
Huevo de lechúcico lunar
) Blizzard announced back during BlizzCon? Well, they are not here yet, but we have a sneak preview on the brand new community site. One of the cool things about this new pet is that is has different models for Alliance and Horde players - just like the Moonkin Form is different for the two factions. Oh, and they are oh-sooo-cute, and I am not one to buy this cuteness stuff easily!
Also, the
Lil' Ragnaros
pet also made it into the preview, and let me tell ya - it is

The Days Before Cataclysm
I've been itching to post a blog about the different events that will take place in the 5-6 weeks before the release of Cataclysm, but Zarhym beat me to it! Since I can't really shed any more light than he did, I will summarize his post and then just give you the blue. Basically the plan from here until December 7 is:
Patch 4.0.1
: The Twilight's Cult & The Elemental Invasion events take place.
Patch 4.0.3
: All of the Cataclysm data is being introduced to your installation folder, no changes to the actual in-game experience (other than some balance issues possibly).
Patch 4.0.3a
(a.k.a. The Shattering): Deathwing emerges from Deepholm, and boy, is he mad! Azeroth shatters and takes on the shape all those Cataclysm maps and guides have been teasing you with.
Cataclysm
: Comes out on December 7, and introduces the 80-85 zones and skills, 450-525 professions, Archaeology, goblins & worgen (and everything else not yet introduced).
Zarhym's post is after the break!

Emblems to Justice Points Conversion Update
Another short news post, folks. Some week ago Blizzard published the planned conversion rates for the current Wrath emblem currencies to the new Cataclysm points. The post listed Emblems of Triumph and Emblems of Frost as being worth 2.75 Justice Points each. This number has been updated, as well as the 2g per Emblem if you are above the cap. The
original blog
has been updated to reflect those changes, and Bashiok's post on the official forums has been included below:
We’ve revised the Justice Points conversion rate for Emblems of Triumph and Emblems of Frost. When the upcoming 4.0.1 patch goes live, these emblems will be converted into 11.58 Justice Points (up from the previously planned 2.75 Justice Points per emblem). Justice Points accrued above the soft cap of 4,000 will be converted to gold at a rate of 47.5 silver per point (down from 2 gold per point) when patch 4.0.3 goes live.

End of Season 8 and Testing for Season 9
Hey, guys, a quick news post coming. Our local Bashiok just posted something exciting on the WoW forums: the next arena season is available for testing on the Cataclysm Beta and you should all go test it provide extensive bug reports and feedback! The official announcement doesn't tell much more than what I just gave you:
Arena Season 9 is now running and available for testing in the Cataclysm beta.
To help facilitate testing we'd like to ask that those interested in providing bug reports and feedback focus on playing arena games, but also participating in the rated battlegrounds. Please let us know if you find any issues or have any feedback. Thanks.
EDIT: Another blue post, this one about arena season 8 ending. It is by the lovely floating skull, Zarhym:
We are currently planning to end Arena Season 8 as early as October 12. At that point we will go through our normal process to determine who is eligible for the end-of-season rewards. This process should take approximately one week. It's very important

A Brief Aside: StarCraft II Patch 1.1
So while Wowhead has not yet become SCHead, Blizzard's space RTS is still a game I play frequently and one I watch the news about. And one of the more important and recent news is that the first somewhat big patch was released on
Tuesday, September 21
- that's just yesterday, yes.
Here is the basic idea of the not-so-groundbreaking changes. Zealot rushes from a proxy Gateway are a little too powerful, especially against a Zerg (you know, 'cause rushing a Terran with their choke full of buildings
can
be done...), so the build time of the Zealot is being increased. Warp Gate cooldown also goes up for those of you who love spending 4,000 minerals in less than a minute by dropping a million Zealots. The Terran is getting a few (deserved, in my opinion) nerfs - longer build time on Reapers and Barracks, and less damage on Siege Tanks and Battlecruisers. Similarly to this, the Zerg Ultralisks' are having their base damage lowered, and their anti-building attack (Ram) goes away and is being replaced by their basic attack.
Let me give you the full patch notes aft

Archaeology on Beta Servers (12942)
Hey there, it's your local silverly reporter with another batch of
very
interesting stuff -
Archaeology

Let me tell you, it's absolutely amazing! I may be a little biased, because it's new and different from all the other professions, but I honestly thing it's a very interesting thing in and of itself.
But I do tend to ramble - let me show you a few things about it!

Games to Teach the Youth
For most of my life I have been unhappy with the education that has been offered to me. Few countries know how to deal with gifted or troubled students, and only a few teachers are able to act properly when they find one. The bane of the genius and the idiot is to never be understood, they say. Well, I did a little thinking, some more talking, and finally decided to do some writing on the topic as well. Why do we often find education inadequate, and why are students growing increasingly uninterested in the classroom activities?
A simple answer would be something like "They are not interesting." Well, let's stick with this and try to figure out how to make learning more interesting. After all you can be the greatest teacher the world has ever known and will ever know, but if your students are not interested in the stuff you are talking about, almost all of your talent is wasted. We can look at neurobiology, or at religion, or at psychology, or at philosophy, and we would probably find some pretty good answers. However, I would like to offer you a drastically different approach to the problem - let's look at games.

New Cataclysm Beta Launcher (Soon!)
Our favorite floating skull Zarhym just announced that a new launcher for the Cataclysm Beta is in the works. It should be available with the next beta patch, and will incorporate a few of the programs you already need to run during patching. Namely, those are the Launcher, the Updater, and the Downloader. It will also stream game data while you are in the game, playing. In other words, patching should happen much easier, and hopefully - faster. If the downloading process is slowing down your internet, or if the patching is eating your processor, you could always stop either one of those processes and let it finish after you are done playing.
Update:
Zarhym has posted a FAQ on the new launcher, you can read all about it after the break!

Throne of the Tides Impressions
About couple of weeks ago I posted
blog
about how one of the new Cataclysm dungeons, Blackrock Caverns, felt. If you are interested in it, go ahead and take a look - I found it a pretty cool instance. Not as cool as the one I am about to present to you here and now though. You can read my shorter description
here
.
The Throne of the Tides is an 82-84 dungeon, supposedly the second one in the Abyssal Maw - the first one still unnamed and with 0 info about it. If you follow the normal quest flow, you will find the entrance to this dungeon during your last quest in Vashj'ir, after a colossal battle featuring Neptulon the Tidehunter himself. As you approach the giant whirlpool beneath Vashj'ir, you get sucked in, everything swirls around you, and - tadaaa - you drop in the elemental realm of water. Pretty cool looking place, by the way. But let's talk content now!

Answers to Common Community Questions About Real ID
The Real ID system, which we were introduced to a little while ago, was one of the most controversial things Blizzard has done in a long time. The feedback from the community varied from extremely negative to extremely positive, with all the points in-between. Not only has the community been divided in its opinions, but it has been quite vocal with them as well. Just a little while ago a post appeared on the official Battle.net StarCraft II blog; in it Blizzard answers common questions and addresses concerns about the Real ID functionality, features, and plans.

Cataclysm Dungeon Bosses
A couple of builds ago Cataclysm alpha testers saw the first "real" achievements from the new expansion - achievements different from the random funny placeholders and the standard exploration achievements. I am talking about the dungeon (and some raid) achievements. And although they were cool in and of themselves, to me there was something else intriguing hiding inside them - the knowledge of what the different instances will be called and what kind of bosses they will feature. From this we could even gather some very basic and preliminary information about who (or
what
) those bosses will be. Interesting stuff for me and other players eager to learn more about the expansion.
So! Let me get to the good stuff and present you with a list of all the bosses in the Cataclysm dungeons, as well as with some short description and links whenever they are available. Keep in mind, only Blackrock Caverns and Throne of the Tides are available for testing (even if some of us managed to sneak inside the Stonecore), so information beyond those 2 (3) will be
scarce
virtually non-existent. Also, keep an eye out for a similar blog for raids!

Blackrock Caverns Impressions
The latest news on the Internet - Cataclysm closed beta is hitting us good! But we all know this. What's more important is that since the NDA has been lifted, we'll be showering you with tons of new information, blogs, guide pages, videos, screenshots, and dataz.
Fewyn
just posted some good stuff about the
UI Changes
in Cataclysm (and you should check it out if you haven't), so I decided to go a different route - do a dungeon, see how it feels, give a few screenshots, and a bit of an overall opinion about how the experience is.
Right now the only two dungeons available for testing are
Blackrock Caverns
and the
Throne of the Tides
. So I went to my good old friend, the Dungeon Finder, and said "Yo dawg, you heard I like dungeons? Give me a random one!" And so the
Blackrock Caverns
popped...

Wrath of the Lich King: Exhausted?
I have been playing WoW for close to 3 years now, I think. One of the main things that has kept me
active
in the game so long was a basic MMORPG concept, that Blizzard developed to great heights - there is always stuff to do. If it's not leveling, then it's questing. If it's not questing, it's money-making. If it's not money-making, it's gearing up. If it's not gearing up, it's raiding. If it's not raiding, it's achievement farming. I could probably go on for a while (without mentioning PvP, I don't really do that).
So okay, there is always stuff to do. The game is endless, and that's one of its charms.

Cataclysm Professions Preview

Cataclysm
are - 3 new abilities in the 80-85 range, talent modifications, new talents, and some core class mechanics overhauls. Oh, and masteries. Overall - pretty interesting stuff.
Now a new wave of juicy and interesting news hits the board - changes in the professions. Ever been annoyed by the various profession specializations? Well, that's going away. Elixirs not good enough for you? Getting buffed. New Jewelcrafting, Cooking and Fishing dailies, but most importantly -
