It seems that they chose to use more ranged DPS because they could outrange the Desesperación casts during the intermission phases and still hit the boss during Augurio macabro.

In terms of rings, Intermission rings could always go clockwise, however some of the rings had to go the "correct" direction in order to make the timer in the last phase.
