Welcome back to another installment of WoW History, where we check what happened in the past on this very week!
The events of this week include the retirement of a very beloved member of the Blizzard team, the introduction of Challenge Modes, and the first ever 20-man raid in WoW! Shall we begin?

September 12th, 2016
On this day, Chris Metzen announced his retirement
. The former Senior Vice President of History and Franchise Development announced his retirement from Blizzard Entertainment to spend more time with his family.
He was instrumental on the shaping of many Blizzard universes, most notably World of Warcraft itself. Metzen is also the voice of Thrall (which he didn't stop doing!), Varian Wrynn and Bastion from Overwatch, as well as many other creatures from the Blizzard universe. The community was overwhelmed, and wished him the best of luck in his future endeavors.
Here's when we reported his retirement
. Hope he's doing well!

The PTR for Patch 7.1 is released!
Players got their hands to test out content for 7.1 first hand on this day.
Highlights of Patch 7.1 include the
Karazhan
as a 5-man dungeon, the
Prueba del Valor
raid, and the very anticipated
Sangre de Sargeras
vendor!
You can check out our preview for the PTR and the first version of it's patch notes here!

With Siege of Orgrimmar being completed by the first time, the guild <Availed> recorded and streamed the cinematic that shows up at the end of the raid.
The cinematic reveals that Garrosh was not actually dead, the Alliance spared the Horde's existence, and Vol'jin became the new Warchief of the Horde. Sparing Garrosh was proven to be an error, though, as he managed to escape his prison in Pandaria and eventually unleash the events that would result in the Warlords of Draenor expansion.
Check out when we reported this, and the Alliance version of the cinematic here!

Oops! On an interview with The Escapist, Blizzard accidently let out the next legendary, to be released with Dragon Soul, would be
a dagger for rogues
. Later on it would be revealed that those would be the
Fangs of the Father
,
Golad, Crepúsculo de los Aspectos
and
Tiriosh, Pesadilla de los Tiempos
. This generated some buzz back then, as the interview was removed from The Escapist's website.
Check out when we reported this!

On this day, Wowhead published it's first official preview on the
Challenge Mode
feature in Mists of Pandaria!
Challenge modes were a dungeon difficulty tailored for people who really wanted a challenge - promoting new features such as ilvl scaling (Challenge Mode dungeons scaled down your gear to a certain ilvl, so those dungeons would still be challenging as the expansion progresses), actual timed runs, and many achievements.
The objective of this mode was completing dungeons in a certain amount of time. The rewards for completing them were purely aesthetic:
A Bronze rating on all dungeons would give you a new title,
A Silver rating on all dungeons would give you a choice of Phoenix mount, via
Huevo de fénix ancestral
;
A Gold rating on all dungeons gave you a set intended for transmogging, with unique features to each class.
Since then, those class sets were made unobtainable. The
Class Hall Armor Sets
released with Legion are inspired by the original Challenge Mode sets. If you'be obtained any of the original armor sets, all characters of that class can transmog that set.
Challenge Mode was a feature for both Mists of Pandaria and Warlords of Draenor, and paved the way for Mythic Keystone dungeons in Legion.

On this day, Blizzard released a preview of one of the two new battlegrounds to be implemented in Cataclysm,
La Batalla por Gilneas
!
On this 10-man Battleground, we deal with part of the aftermath of the fall of the Greymane Wall, which separated the nation of Gilneas from the rest of the Eastern Kingdoms: In addition to dealing with their newfound freedom and the effects of the worgen curse, the humans of Gilneas also had to deal with the Horde. The Horde recognizes Gilneas as a resource-rich territory, ready to serve as fuel their war effort, and the inhabitants of Gilneas must work with the Alliance to safeguard their land.
Battle for Gilneas is a control point style battleground, with 3 control points that must be conquered by your faction to reach victory.
You can check the official Blizzard preview for Battle for Gilneas on the old WoW website
, and you can also check
when we reported the new Battleground
!

September 13th, 2005 - Zul'Gurub Released
Patch 1.7.0 is released! The Rise of the Blood God patch released the raid version of
Zul'Gurub
, WoW's first event, and other nifty things. Highlights include:
New Raid: Zul'Gurub
: Hidden within the jungles of Stranglethorn, an ancient Troll city has been uncovered. Zul'Gurub is the first 20-man raid in the history of WoW! Other remarkable firsts for Zul'Gurub is being the first outdoor raid, allowing you to ride your mount inside the instance!
Tribu Zandalar
was a special Zul'Gurub faction - players primarily earned reputation for special enchants, Zandalar armor sets, and recipes like
Esquema: gafas vid de sangre
.
The final boss, Hakkar the Soulflayer, had a special
Sangre corrupta
mechanic which spread a deadly plague to players and pets. Players decided they could leave the instance and continue spreading the plague via pets, which led to a massive disease outbreak throughout Warcraft. The
Corrupted Blood Incident
was later used as a model for epidemic research.
This instance dropped the coveted mounts
Tigre Zulian presto
and
Raptor Razzashi presto
.
There was even a special fishing boss and achievement!
La presa más mortífera
was awarded for fishing up
Gahz'ranka
with
Cebo de Fangoapestoso
and
Fangoapestoso Zulian
.
New Battleground: Arathi Basin
: Join
Liga de Arathor
or the
Los Rapiñadores
as they battle for precious resources in
Cuenca de Arathi
! This 15-man battleground promotes a strategic race between the factions, as you fight to capture strategic landmarks and cripple the enemy.
This patch also marks the implementation of
Battleground Weekends
, weekly events where emissaries for battlegrounds appear in major cities, and honor/reputation gains for said battleground are increased. This system existed for a very long time under the name Call to Arms, till it's eventual removal in Warlords of Draenor.
Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza
: A grand new event in the coasts of Stranglethorn Veil! Prove you're the best fisher and bait your hooks! This event is still going strong on live servers with rewards like
Anzuelo de Maestro pescador
and
Caña de pescar de arcanita
, check our
event guide
for details.
You can check the patch notes on the archived version of the WoW website!
Did you raid the old Zul'Gurub? Had any neck and neck battles in Gilneas? Or any memorable times in Challenge Modes? Let us know in the comments!
See you next week!
