We've uncovered a new cutscene during the
Focusing the Eye
questline in Korthia on the Patch 9.1 PTR, in which we learn more about the Val'kyr and find old enemies working together within the Maw.
9.1 Story Spoiler Warning!
While working with Ve'nari in the newly uncovered Korthia section of the Maw, we find Danica imprisoned within Desmotaeron. One of the Val'kyr loyal to Odyn, she and several of her sisters came to Korthia for reasons unknown, though it appears that Danica is the only survivor. Upon freeing her, we were previously greeted with a blacked out "AWESOME IN-GAME EVENT", but the recently added cutscene reveals Helya pulling the strings. Mocking our naivety, we realize her intentions as transfers the essence of Odyn's slain Val'kyr into the corpse of Annhylde, the first of the nine fallen Val'kyr to sacrifice herself for Sylvanas and set the Banshee Queen down the dark path of service to the Jailer.
Keep in mind this cutscene is still a work-in-progress and not considered final.
Returning with Danica to the Halls of Valor, she delivers Helya's hate-filled message to the Titan Watcher. Furious, Odyn commands an assault on the Maw, destroying the Eye of the Jailer and inadvertently causing the Val'kyr to meet Polemarch Adrestes and Kleia of the Kyrian covenant, revealing the uncanny similarities between their organizations. The entire questline can be seen below, sans the latest cutscene with Helya, which was omitted at the time of recording.
Sylvanas bonded with the last of the Lich King's Val'kyr in the short story "Edge of Night," after throwing herself from the top of the Frozen Throne in an effort to escape the horrors of undeath. Finding herself faced with an even worse fate in what we now know to be the Maw, she accepted the protection of the nine Val'kyr. Ironically, this all appeared to be a part of the Jailor's plan, as it still brought the Banshee Queen into his service, through choice rather than torment.
Over the years, five more Val'kyr were lost, bringing Sylvanas dangerously close to true death once again, though it appears that Heyla is helping to resurrect their number, using the soul of one of Odyn's Val'kyr to do so. There's some interesting symbolism here, as
Heyla was the first of the Val'kyr created by Odyn
, though she would not join the Jailer until Mueh'zala whispered in her ear much further down the road.
At this point, there are only three Val'kyr remaining to keep Sylvanas from true death, although what that may mean when she is already in the Shadowlands by choice is uncertain. It's similarly unclear if Helya's rituals to resurrect the six decreased Val'kyr are incomplete or only temporary, as they don't appear to come back to life entirely, but are able to manifest physically for at least a short time during
The Nine encounter in the Sanctum of Domination raid
. The three remaining Val'kyr are the main combatants, while Skyja uses
Llamada de las Val'kyr
to attack players throughout the encounter.
The dark pact Sylvanas struck with the val'kyr forged her bond with the Jailer. Through the years, these winged sisters faithfully served the Dark Lady, even if it meant sacrificing themselves on her behalf. Now Sylvanas calls her nine val'kyr to fight for her one last time.
