Hello, folks! My name is
Dr. Dorkins
*
not important. What is important is that I have finally put together an Ignis guide. Many of you probably have the old giant on farm, but for those who don't - and the future generations - here it is!
Ignis the Furnace Master
is fire giant, located in Ulduar. It is unknown whether he was there originally, or if he was brought by
Loken
(although I prefer the former), but one thing is certain - he works for
Yogg-Saron
just as much as Loken did. He is the one who crafted Razorscale's metal armor, and the one who created Kologarn, literally from a chunk of stone. You can find him in his Colossal Forge, on the opposite side of Razorscale.
*
Not intended to make fun of Dorkins. I love the opening :)
Trash
Unlike the Flame Leviathan and Razorscale (the latter of which has absolutely no trash), Ignis' guards can be quite a pain. The two
Molten Colossi
in the beginning should be tanked far away from each other, as their AoE stun combined with silence can kill people. Next are a few patrols of either two
Magma Ragers
(which should be tanked apart, because of their fire-tornado-knockback-spell) or two
Forge Constructs
(which need to be simply faced away from the raid). Fire resist totem or aura helps a little if you are just entering the place.
Normal Strategy
Ignis has a few moves to watch out for, but all can be deadly if you are not paying attention. A good tanking position is him facing one of the water pools on either side of his forge. This way your tank won't take unnecessary damage from
Agostar
, as the water extinguishes the secondary effect of the spell. Your tank will want to turn Ignis 180 degrees every 2nd Scorch, allowing the spell to drop scorched ground somewhere away from the DPS. Your Offtank(s) will be picking the
Iron Constructs
as soon as they spawn (it's a good idea for an OT to hang around the casters, so they don't get stomped) and dragging them into the burning ground left behind by Scorch. As soon as the constructs gain 10 stacks of the
Calor
buff (applied every 1 second spent in the scorched ground),
they will drop aggro
and turn
Al rojo vivo
. Molten constructs damage everybody around them, so they should be dragged to the water pool opposite of the one Ignis is being tanked at.
Do not drag the constructs close to the main tank
.
A molten construct that touches the water turns
Quebradizo
for 20 seconds. It will be stunned, and attacks against it will have extra crit chance. Use a ranged DPS to
Trizar
them
as soon as your tank(s) are away from them
. Tanks have died because the DPS rushes in to kill the constructs - you have 20 seconds to do it, don't compromise your poor tanks' life.
If you don't have a second OT, you can have a class with a taunt spell sit in the water and taunt Molten constructs away from the OT. A hunter is a good idea, as they can just move away after the constructs turn Brittle, and then shatter them themselves.
Meanwhile...
The main tank is just tanking Ignis, spinning him around every second Scorch (Ignis doesn't have any direct AoE attacks, so you don't need to worry about cleaves or tail-swipe-like moves); the off-tanks are playing with the constructs (2 OTs are enough). The rest of the group has another couple of things to watch out for -
Caños de llamas
, which will interrupt all spellcasting for quite some time. Spellcasters, healers included,
stop casting
! "Let me just get this heal off" doesn't cut it - you being silenced is worse than you not getting the cast off - Ignis doesn't melee while he casts this spell so the HoTs should keep the tank up. Same applies for the DPS - don't cripple your group because of tunnel vision.
The other thing to watch out for is
Olla de escoria
. Ignis will randomly charge somebody, grab them and toss them in his pot full of nice hot lava. This person will usually need a dedicated healer in order to survive. Ignis will not grab the MT, but he may choose one of your OTs - although that happens rarely. Just a heads-up. Whoever gets tossed in the pot, you are not incapacitated in any way, shape, or form - you can heal yourself, you can DPS the boss, you can even
save your healers some sweating
. If you survive the pot, you will come out with a short-lasting attack/cast speed buff, so unload some damage on that giant!
Healers, usually one per tank and one for whoever gets tossed in the pot is enough. Raid damage is minimal, only during Flame Jets really. But Ignis might start hitting rather hard if your MT is not doing well with the Scorches, or if your OTs are not really getting those constructs molten and then brittle.
Burn Strategy
(pun intended)
If you are feeling really confident in your DPS, you can try to just straight-burn Ignis. This is easier on 10-man generally, but if you are willing to sacrifice healers for DPS, it might be done in 25 as well.
Few slight modifications to the normal strategy are needed. Your off-tank (preferably only one, so you can have
even more
DPS) will be picking up the adds and keeping them close to Ignis (so he can pick them all up quickly). The MT will keep Ignis facing the water pool at all times, so all Scorches are being extinguished - no extra damage here. Other than that, just burn him and be very mindful of Flame Jets. Your tanks will also need a lot of healing - the OT will be tanking more adds than ever, and Ignis will be getting 15% extra damage for each add alive. 8 adds and above generally means you are close to death.
Achievements
The Siege of Ulduar
- Defeat Ignis to receive credit for this achievement.
Hot Pocket
- Survive Ignis' pot.
Shattered
- Shatter 2 Iron Constructs within 5 seconds of each other. Fairly easily done, as you are likely to have two adds alive during most of the fight - just have your "shatterers" time their blasts well and make sure no tanks are caught between the explosions.
Stokin' the Furnace
- Defeat Ignis in under 240 seconds. On Normal difficulty, that's a little over 23,000 combined DPS (or ~3,800 per DPS, assuming you have 2 tanks and 2 healers). On Heroic difficulty, that's ~81,000 average total DPS. Assuming 21 DPS, that's around the same 3,800 DPS per. Tanks are excluded from both. Required for
Glory of the Ulduar Raider
Champion of Ulduar
- Defeat Ignis the Furnace Master on your first try for this lock-out period, without anyone in the raid dying. It shouldn't be too hard. Taking extra healers might be a good decision, as Ignis doesn't have a Berserk timer.
