Interview with ABC's Alec at the 2017 Arena World Championship

After the conclusion of the 2017 Arena World Championship, Dderserei had the opportunity to interview Alec, the captain of the winning team ABC. Alec is a veteran of the World of Warcraft PvP scene and is one of the most notable Mages in the world.

Q: Firstly congatulations on your win and continuing the EU tradition of winning BlizzCon, it must feel pretty amazing!
A: Yeah it feels good to represent EU and to give everyone a warm welcome to EU.
Q: Last year you just missed out on making it to BlizzCon, how did you rebuild after that?
A: Actually after we lost last year, I was actually a bit depressed and I felt cheated from the game because were prepared, I thought we were good enough but we didn't make it to BlizzCon. My team helped me rebuild and helped me build confidence again and they said we should stay together, we should go all the way.
Q: Do you think you made the right decision?
A: Yeah, now I feel like I made the right decision, for sure!
Q: Do you think that going through that process strengthened your team?
A: Yes, because losing definitely teaches you a lesson and we had a lesson to learn. With everything that we learned, we made it to the Grand Finals and I don't think we could have without that. It really took a loss to make us win, and I'm happy that we stood through it as a team and as friends.
Q: The format of the Road to BlizzCon was very different this year, how do you feel that affected your preparation?
A: The Road to BlizzCon this year was a long one and a very tough one. We knew we were going to make it to Regionals, BlizzCon was the dream. At times, we had to spend so much time that we were almost burned out, but it takes good friends to make it through all of this and I think we did and I'm really happy about that.
Q: Do you think the longer Road to BlizzCon had an effect on which teams were actually able to make it through?
A: I think the long Road to BlizzCon gave us more tournament experience and it taught us how to approach a tournament better because we had more practice in how to handle defeat and how to handle victory. So yes, it definitely changed who got to BlizzCon. You have to be adaptive, and we were taught this lesson with the long road. You couldn't just make it with one composition or one strategy, you had to keep changing and you had to keep improving.
Q: On the topic of compositions, your team is best known for Rogue Mage Druid. You didn't play it in the Grand Final, but you did to play it on the big stage, how was that experience?
A: It feels good to play triple mains for once, because as I said, you need to be adaptive and always have the right strategy and the right compositions. When I had the idea this morning that Niksi could actually be very valuable on Rogue, we talked it through and instantly okayed it and it went really well.
Q: What made you decide to run the Windwalker Monk in the last series?
A: Traditionally we would play something like RMP with Subtlety Rogue but in the state of the game, we just valued Windwalker more. We think it's a better class with a better toolkit and it's easier to play. In LAN and high pressure situations you need something that you can execute, something that if things go wrong, you don't instantly lose and the Windwalker enabled this for us so we naturally saw it was the best pick for the situation.
Q: With all the changes this year, what would you like to see for WoW esports in the future?
A: I would like to see continued support. This year has been the most professional year, and the year I felt most appreciated by Blizzard. They did a good job picking up talented casters and talented players who can work behind the scenes and improve the process. Now we need some more exposure maybe, working together with sponsors and making it into a more prominent esport. I think it has the potential to be there, and the competitive scene is quite active. What we are missing right now is broad exposure and maybe cooperation with sponsors.
Q: Now that you've won and got through the difficult year before, do you think you'll be back next year?
A: I haven't decided what my plans are yet. When I was going to BlizzCon, I couldn't believe it, it was a dream come true. I came back just to get here and now having won it, it's more of a fairytale even, so I'll have to think about what my future will be, and I'll let you know.
