Art Blast: Kelli Hoover - Azure Span, Skyboxes, and Clouds

ArtStation Magazine recently published another
Art Blast
, this time focused on the visuals for Dragonflight. The piece featured selections of the work of many Blizzard artists focusing on their particular specialty. The art departments at Blizzard consistently knock the ball out of the park with their work - we are going to feature a few of these artists and spotlight what they made for Dragonflight.
Kelli Hoover is a Senior 3D and Environment Artist at Blizzard. They are responsible for many of the absolutely gorgeous skyboxes and vistas that you see in Dragon Flight.
I was responsible for making the skybox for Thaldraszus in World of Warcraft Dragonflight. The shelf clouds remind me a little bit of whales...!
To go along with the new dragon riding experience, I was tasked with creating and placing all the giant atmospheric clouds in the Dragon Isles. It was very challenging project, since not only did we want them to look good next to our skyboxes, but I had to create everything by hand while considering the technical concerns for overdraw and sorting issues. I'm happy with the results and how they add to the atmosphere of the world, and I hope everyone enjoys flying through them! Also big thanks to CJ Ordog from our engine team for his support on getting the shaders working for these clouds!
I worked many plants, tilesets, ground detail, fog effects, and general zone and forest biome lighting for the Azure Span in Dragonflight. Specifically for the plant kit, I created the mushrooms, sprawling green bushes including snow variants, milkweed, puff plants, flowers, and skinny sprigs. The trees were made by Kate McKee, Gus Schmidt, and Marie Lazar. The beautiful red forest plants shown in these screenshots were also created by Marie.
