If you can't currently learn something from the item, you'll get the message;

There is nothing left to invent and you cannot be convinced otherwise.

You may still have recipes to learn but require points in certain specializations.

For example, to get the recipes for profession gear, you need to unlock the Profession Gear specialization under Engineered Equipment, then your Comprehensibly Organized Ideas will give new recipes.

If you want to max your Montón de chatarra oxidada yield, keep at least one invention unlearned! (so anything marked 'Invention' in the Engineering window). This includes prototypes and those learned from Ideas exhaustivamente organizadas. For details, see the spoiler tag.

Once you learn all inventions, they no longer drop from Buscar entre la chatarra. This sort of makes sense, but Desmontar invento also gives about 15 Montón de chatarra oxidada on average so you lose out on a lot of scrap (which in turn give parts to use or sell). Desmontar invento takes exactly two minutes a stack at Crafting Speed 75%, so in the long run this is definitely worth it. Buscar entre la chatarra will give some leftover scrap (and notes in case you still miss patterns from Ideas exhaustivamente organizadas) instead of inventions but this pales in comparison to the thousands you get from disassembling.

I can now first hand confirm this: wanting to max out my knowledge from First Crafts the only pattern I'm now missing is Cápsula de escape defectuosa: Inventar and Buscar entre la chatarra give me Prototipo: cápsula de escape defectuosa consistently. If you go down to just one invention just bank it to prevent learning it by accident. Every other invention will now be Prototipo irreconocible that you can Desmontar invento at will.

I'm not sure if this effective nerf is intended but it seems to be, considering the 'leftover' from scouring after you learn all inventions.

The War Within Engineering - Discovery Mechanics (A great idea, or scrap it?)
Engineers can learn 75 new recipes as of The War Within's launch, 50 of which are gated behind Discovery mechanics.

Discovery Mechanics - How it Works

Engineers get started with Buscar entre la chatarra, taught by their profession trainer.
Buscar entre la chatarra will quickly allow the engineer to discover the profession's other essential skills, standard parts, and be a rare source of prototypes .
They will quickly learn Inventar, which is a guaranteed* prototype each day. (*While supplies last)

Prototypes are single-use versions of engineer recipes which teach that recipe when used.

IMPORTANT: Once an Engineer learns the recipe, they will never receive the prototype version again.

Desmontar invento can be used on unwanted or excess prototypes (including Prototipo irreconocible), generating up to 10 Montón de chatarra oxidada and Notas garabateadas deprisa.
Notas garabateadas deprisa create Ideas exhaustivamente organizadas, which can only be used to learn Engineering recipes. Neither item has any vendor value or other uses.

Discovery Mechanics - How it Doesn't Work

The discovery flavor and mechanics are built around 3 abilities: Buscar entre la chatarra, Inventar, and Desmontar invento.
If an engineer learns all 14 recipes linked to prototypes, they will never receive a prototype again.
Instead of Prototipo irreconocible, they directly receive Notas garabateadas deprisa.

What are the impacts of losing the prototype mechanic?

Desmontar invento ceases to function.
After the initial discovery/skill-up phase, Inventar also ceases to have any function.
Since prototypes (recyclable) are replaced with Notas garabateadas deprisa (not recyclable), Buscar entre la chatarra becomes a less efficient source of parts.

How many Ideas exhaustivamente organizadas does an engineer actually need?

28 recipes require Ideas exhaustivamente organizadas to discover them.

How the Engineer allocates their Engineering Knowledge is also important, since three different sub-specialties control access to discoveries..

What about when you have invented everything?
There is light at the end of the tunnel!
When you have discovered the final recipe requiring Ideas exhaustivamente organizadas , you will cease to receive Notas garabateadas deprisa completely.
Buscar entre la chatarra will now have a chance to create the finished version of prototyped recipes, such as the tinker modules and potion bombs.
Inventar will have a 100% chance to produce the finished version of one of the prototyped recipes.

There are 14 prototypes, plus the Prototipo irreconocible which can be turned into one of the fourteen. Once you've learned all 14, Scour Through Scrap/Invent goes straight to Hastily Scrawled Notes.
