While playing around with
Highest Rated
and
Newest First
, I found that both don't reflect what I would like to see. Hence here is my suggestion for a new
smart
order of comments.
The main idea is to give posts and votes (including votes on comment replies) a weight that decreases over time (number of patches past OP). From these values a weighted sum is calculated and the result is used to determine a
smart
sorting order.
There is work to be done
, I know.
Immediate problem I see is that some information goes out of date incredibly fast over a patch whereas some stuff is more or less still correct from Vanilla/TBC.
(do you mind if I latch onto this thread and post an idea I had?)

How do you propose dealing with the problem of some things aging faster than others?
My idea is less related to your topic but:
A lot of people are complaining that lots of jokey comments are high rated and block helpful comments. I suggest you make two up vote buttons (can only use one per comment)! One is helpful and one is standard up vote. Then if you need info, just sort by most helpful!
Didn't really think it really warranted a whole thread.

But they're funny and insightful, and don't deserve a delete a lot of the time.
Are you saying that there should be a delay before the rating begins to "decay" and upvotes reset the delay?
Bit tired so I may be misinterpreting.
P.S. Tasmanian devils? Are you Australian?

Wouldn't that mean one person could dramatically change the rating of old comments? Or...?
And yeah, it's bloody late in Australia at the moment.
