Good for you, seriously. And also knowing what Blizz are like, if they found out about your dishonesty they may have punished you ^^

Good choice. Honesty goes a long way, while it
may
not seem to matter that much in this case.
Apply it to real life, and the other part will be very happy to you (Imagine you got a 100$ bill returned from a cashier instead of a 50$ bill). :)

Fair play to you sir! ( or madame ).

You did the right thing. Kudos to you for that.
If it was me personally. I would of sat on the gold for a little while. If Blizzard didn't take notice after a week. Then slowly spend it.
What can I say, I'm not as morally sound. >_>

Reminds me of the movie "Training Day"
Edited:
BTW, Had you only had 1,000 gold would you still have returned it? Seems with 14K .. gold is pretty attainable to you. Just wondering...

I got 'hacked' yesterday (probably through my own laziness and failure to change my password for 18 months than anything else). The hackers kindly left me naked in Dalaran without any of my gear, bags, money or even my fishing rod to while away the time while waiting for a GM to /w me.
When a GM contacted me commendably quickly to restore everything which had been taken, I started checking to see that everything had been returned correctly as advised. Whilst going through my various checks I noticed that he had accidentally returned double the amount of gold that I had before - I now had over 28k as opposed to 14k the previous day.
Being an honest type, I immediately whispered him back to let him know and he promptly took 14k back again. Am I just too honest for my own good? Should I have kept the extra gold and finally bought myself a Traveller's Tundra Mammoth & Mechano-Hog after 6 months of on-off saving for one or the other?
Honesty is the best policy... well maybe not the
best
but that's what people say.

I would have kept the gold. His error, not your.

Good move; had you used it and Blizzard realized there error, they would have taken back whatever you spent it on.

I really think blizz does this offten or maybe they just look at what the most gold the character had on him at one time and gives him that.
example: my friend just bought his motorcycle mount and spent all his gold but like 200g then he got hacked. They ended up giving him back 15k and left him with his mount. He didn't realize it till after the ticket was closed though.

It's actually quite common that GMs will give back more money than what was taken from you, to compensate for the inconvenience and get a better review on the survey they ask you to take. I know a few people in my guild who got hacked and when they got their stuff restored, had a bunch of Ore and/or gold that they didn't have before.
Your honesty is indeed a beacon of light in the otherwise habitually-dishonest world of the Internet. While you didn't
have
to return the gold, you can apply that honesty to real life and help spread the joy.
