How many Alts is to much, and how many do you have?

10 alts is too many! (you can only have 9 alts on one realm).

I'm another alt-o-holic with a full roster;
80 priest
80 hunter
80 rogue
74 warlock
73 mage
54 shaman
49 warrior
37 druid
30 paladin
58 deathknight (just bank alt on this server, but I also have a 67 deathknight on a friend's server for the occaisional bit of pvp fun)

When Cataclysm comes I will probably delete the 58 deathknight to remake him as a goblin, and just try to keep all the junk in the alts' banks instead of having a character to dump everything on.

The main thing I like about having so many characters (apart from never getting bored) is self-sufficiency - I have at least one of every tradeskill in my list, so if I need something there's a good chance that I can make it myself and will already have the mats in the bank somewhere.

This way I will have all professions covered (with the exception of the defunct macecrafting spec), all classes covered, all alliance races covered, and a horde character to use the neutral AH with a friend or set off the Hellfire Peninsula pvp capture points.

This topic has been posted multiple times not long ago.

I see the value of corralling similar discussion together. But, I also think it's no particular sin to discuss something which has ever been discussed before. (Or else, we would be in the habit of silencing metaphysical discussion on topics which past Philosphers tread and retread, umpteen times before)

I currently have three main characters:

Warlock - 80
Mage - 60 (and very rarely played)
Death Knight - 59 (also, rarely played)
Shaman - 32, and climbing. I hesitate to say it now, but it's even possible that he could become my main!

I've played with a number of classes. Mostly, to determine which ones I enjoyed more than others. But, given a finite amount of time in which to play WoW, I prefer to perfect fewer toons -- and perfect my abilities to play them well, in both PvE and PvP -- over having a million alts.

And that's just on one server. I have a few level 60-sopmething DKs on various servers, and a scattering of lowbie alts I play when I want to go back to basics (nobody to bankroll them, no guild- just me and the character). Your playstyle is your own- if you have more fun leveling alts than gearing up at endgame, then do it! After all, you play to have fun, right?

I think 3 alts is about the maximum number of alts you can have whilst still being able to gear them up and play with they regularly

I agree with this.
I have:
tauren warrior 80
undead warlock 80
troll shammie 80
befl pally 80
ork rogue 80
tauren druid 41

So far i have managed to gear up the warrior, the lock and have started on the pally who is coming on nicely. I am having to make time to actually run the shammie and the rogue through roics to get kit for them and this is starting to feel like a job as opposed to fun. Its these extra two alts i have ignored the most and my poor little druid is being totally sidelined atm.
Hence the 3 alt theory. Once they are at current expansion level max that you can achieve then crack on with others but till then, 3 is a nice number
