So I've finally decided to give shadow a try, the plan was basically to do a couple of hours worth of farming triumphs and replace a few holy pieces with +hit pieces, just to start with, and if and when I start raiding in shadow, grabbing more appropriate gear as I go.
Here is the profile
, compared to my holy set (armory link in sig) the following items are changed:
Helm from non-hit triumph piece to +hit triumph piece
Shoulders from T9.232 healing to 245 +hit triumph piece
Gloves from T9.232 healing to T9.232 shadow
Legs from a 245 pair from ToC25 to T9.232 shadow
All my gems in my holy set are Reckless Ametrine, I switched these out for 2 Purified Dreadstone (to activate meta), the Chaotic Skyflare Diamond, and a couple of Potent Ametrine to push my crit up a little.
Compared to my holy set I lose 318 spirit and 137 spell power.
Just wondering a couple of things... Firstly, how sub-optimal is this set? And how much more work (from raiding) would be required to make it optimal? Does the Ashen healing ring work for the healing from Vampiric Embrace or Devouring Plague? And how much DPS would I expect to lose compared to an optimal set of similar level gear?

We all started exactly the same way. At least those of us who built healing sets before shadow sets. It's obviously not going to get you as far as a true up-to-date shadow set (with the Ashen dps ring, for example, and the T10 set bonuses), but you knew that.
And no, the healing ring won't proc from your shadowform quasi-heals.
But as long as you're hit-capped and gemmed properly, your biggest dps boost will come from closing the skill gap. Then gear.

Get another sp trinket. As easy as honor is to get, in a couple hours you could find yourself the proud owner of
Battlemaster's Ruination
for 34,100 honor. You can work on obtaining a better trinket from there.
Obviously since most of your gear is dual purpose (and believe me you are not alone in this struggle), you can't expect to maximize dps potential because your gems aren't bis for shadow. However, your stats seem to be well balanced, which says a lot. I'd give you an estimate on how much you'd loose, but I don't seem to be very good at it.

Thanks for the advice guys, but I should have probably said in my OP what my objective was a little more fully.
Shadow will never be anything more than an OS for me, I'm too addicted to healing, but I've just transferred server from a crappy-but-thinks-they're-good guild to a Kingslayer guild, and naturally, the GM is a little cautious about me as he's never seen me in action. Having a shadow OS in theory gives me twice as much leverage to get myself into the main raid. I am most certainly NOT prepared to spend Frost badges on shadow gear at this point in time, not until I have 4/5 healing T10 (I've been dumb and spending my frosties on primordial saronites to sell, although I needed some for my boots).
Obviously, my healing gear is quite fine and could easily see me through ICC, but what can I say? I'm greedy :P
Also, a query about this:
Also, it's much easier to MS/OS Disc/Shadow than it is to do Holy/Shadow because most of the stats on Disc gear are the same as Shadow (except the hit of course).
AFAIK, disco doesn't need anywhere near as much haste as holy due to Enlightenment and Borrowed Time, and spirit is also a low priority for disco if they can get their hands on MP5 gear, while spirit is quite a decent stat for shadow due to Twisted Faith (although admittedly not something worth going out of your way for, but then I don't even do that in Holy). I would assume that switching between holy and shadow would actually be better than switching from disco to shadow (obviously I could use a little more crit for my gear level though).

My regen trinket gives 179 static spellpower, and my other trniket, apart from providing a clicky SP cooldown, also gives me a little over 1% crit from the intel. I know mana trinkets probably aren't ideal for shadow, but both of these trinkets are better than the Battlemaster trinket, I believe.
EDIT: If either this or the above post are wrong, feel free to correct me, I'm trying to learn here and sometimes that means imposing my (possibly incorrect) opinion on you all...
