Like many mobile games, Diablo Immortal is free of charge to download and install, for mobile or the PC. But, with numerous in-game currencies and sprawling monetization from bundles that cost less than a dollar up to as much as you want to spend, is it really "Free to Play?"
One Player's Perspective on Diablo Immortal
After a Week and a Half of Play
After a little over a week in the game, we wanted to cover some of the different perspectives on this topic. I've played every day, sometimes with friends and sometimes solo, for a few hours a day. I am pretty casual about games; I have two characters, neither of which is quite level 60 .
I've chosen not to spend much money on the game. I've been playing with just the Empowered Battle Pass, which I bought because I feel like the thousands of people who worked on this game for years deserve something. Also, in my town a ticket to see a recent release movie that lasts two hours is about ten dollars. For my fifteen dollars, I have gotten dozens of hours of fun, in just the first week. Here are my thoughts.
What Do You Get For Free in Diablo Immortal?
Or For Very Little Money
I've been really enjoying Diablo Immortal, and I think it's a beautiful game that really captures the spirit of our old favorites, but in a new "mobile first" incarnation. So, yes, Diablo Immortal can be free to play if you want to approach it that way. I think this will be a great free or nearly free game for some kinds of play.
What Kind of Experience and Play is "Free" Good For?
People who want something to do for five or ten minutes between other activities.
People who occasionally want to group up with their friends or solo to play for a longer while.
People who enjoy the Diablo universe and want to revisit Sanctuary.
People who aren't looking for a competitive experience. If you're shooting for the top of the leaderboard, want the absolute BIS gear, or plan on high ranked end game PvP, that is quite different. Maybe then, this game is not for you. *
* We'll hear that perspective in another article soon, entitled "Is Diablo Immortal Pay to Win?"
Who Might Diablo Immortal Not Be Good For?
You're going to see a lot of shiny new things as you play through Diablo Immortal. If you know you have issues with impulse control or are easily overwhelmed by the desire for the next new gear as soon as possible, you may find that this game is not good for you.
This game is rated M for mature, so parental controls are an option for families concerned about their children's wellbeing.
