By now, if you have played in Beta, watched some of the many trailer gameplay videos, or even played a lot of Diablo III, you may have a good idea of what class to play in Diablo Immortal when it releases next week. But what if you are new to the Diablo Franchise?
Choosing your first character's class is one of the most important decisions you can make. It's possible to change your class in Diablo Immortal, but your gear won't change, so you could end up with items and gems that aren't particularly useful. And, leveling gear for an alternate class can be expensive and time consuming. So, here are some thoughts about the strengths and weaknesses, playstyle, and class fantasy of the six character classes in Diablo Immortal on release.
Necromancer
One of the most straightforward classes to solo and level up, and quite beginner friendly. The Necromancer has powerful death-themed protective abilities like Bone Armor and Bone Wall, as well as summoned minions with powerful attacks. Players who enjoy marshalling their undead minions will enjoy this class.
Crusader
The Crusader is probably the toughest class in terms of survivability. With heavy armor and weapons, and a mighty warhorse, a Crusader is a powerful melee fighter, although they lack the all out damage output of, say, a Demon Hunter. Players who enjoy being in the middle of the action and being very hard for demons or other players to defeat will love being a Crusader.
Barbarian
The Barbarian is a pretty straightforward hack and slash damage machine. While not as durable as the Crusader, they are extremely versatile, and might be the most powerful class of all in PvP. If you like the idea of being a melee storm of blades and fury, the Barbarian may fit your playstyle.
Demon Hunter
The Demon Hunter is also a good solo class and has perhaps the best damage output in game, particularly on single targets like Boss fights. They prefer mobility and attacks from distance with ranged weapons, and therefore wear lighter armor and gear. In PvP they often get targeted first, because they are easier to kill and can do a ton of damage if you give them time to empty their quivers. If you like the idea of facing down demons with elegant crossbows, and feathering them with your bolts before they can reach you, you'll enjoy this playstyle.
Monk
Monks wear lighter armor and rely on speed and high mobility while pounding their enemies in melee. They are a bit more complicated to play because of the need for combinations and to ensure they avoid getting hit too much, but they are very versatile and they have high AoE damage. Monks also have a number of protective abilities to offer their allies, should the situation require it. In PvP, the monk's ability to teleport all over the battlefield makes them a challenging opponent to target. If you like to play a melee class with a high skill ceiling, the Monk is for you.
Wizard
Let's get this out of the way first. Wizards wear very light armor and don't have a large health pool. You're a deep thinker dressed in robes, out in the wilderness among fanged demons and angry monsters. So, you can expect to die occasionally if you play this class, just like Mages and Wizards in other games. There's no Hardcore in Diablo Immortal, so it's all OK.
Wizards study years to master their craft, so it's not surprising that you have a class here that is subtle and difficult to play well. This character class is versatile, though, especially if you have a more survivable character with you to take most of the abuse. Using your combinations and timing your cooldowns will be critical. If you are a strategic thinker and like that idea, you will enjoy playing the Wizard.
So there you have it. It's certain that character class abilities and gear will change over time once the game is live. But most likely these basic fantasy elements and playstyle traits won't change. If you choose your character based on how you like to play, you'll be happiest in the long run playing Diablo Immortal.
