What Could the New Player Housing Themes Be: An Aesthetic Deep Dive

Recently, Blizzard
released a blog post
giving us a first look at player housing coming in World of Warcraft: Midnight. While most of the details about housing are still a closely kept secret, concept art for two themes -
Folk
and
Rugged
- were teased, and each of these themes had distinct racial influences.
The
Folk
theme was clearly inspired by the Humans of Stormwind - blues, banners, cushions, and even the iconic Human furniture stuff this room to bursting, and it's easy to imagine a Stormwind guard returning to this room after a long day guarding the Trade District.
Rugged
, meanwhile, is clearly inspired by the Orc races, Mag'har included. Typical Orc spikes cover the room, and very Horde-coded chests and cushions litter the floor. It's not much of a leap, then, to ask - what would furniture and themes for the other playable races possibly look like?
We took a deep dive into current in-game furniture and aesthetics for all playable races, and speculated on what the names of their themes could be. While Blizzard hasn't confirmed any more information on Player Housing, it's always fun to imagine what could be coming - and maybe add some things to your wish list for content in the future!
Player Housing Overview
Draenei & Lightforged Draenei
Curiously, Draenei and Lightforged Draenei don't have much furniture to speak of in and around The Exodar - which, honestly, tracks in that it was a giant spaceship that crash-landed on Azeroth. There aren't many in-game examples of what their racial style might look like, with many of the assets being generic Human-style tables, shelves, and chairs. What they do have, though, are crystals.
Given their focus on the Light, and the gorgeous crystal shards found on many aspects of Draenei-associated scenery,
Crystalline
could be the theme for these two races - one of which would be significantly more Light-based, while the normal Draenei would likely have more purple and blues in their customization color palettes.
Dwarves & Dark Iron Dwarves
Dwarves and Dark Iron Dwarves are simple races: they like rocks, stones, and metal. It should come as no surprise, then, that many of their in-game object details currently feature all three of those in spades!
Less elaborate than their Earthen counterparts, Dwarven architecture would likely translate to a
Plain
or
Simple
theme - there's not much to them besides the angular nature and the materials used. Players looking for a spartan aesthetic would be at home with the utilitarian Dwarven architecture - but you can always add in some hunting trophies for flair.
Gnomes & Mechagnomes
Gnomes and Mechagnomes are tinkerers; there's always metal, gears, nuts, bolts, and sprockets on hand for these races. It wouldn't be much of a jump, then, to allow players to take on their design choices as a possible
Metallic
theme.
Because of their displacement from Mechagon and Gnomeregan, the Gnome races don't have much footprint to see in-game currently, but there are a few objects hidden in small houses near Gnomeregan that could give hints as to the type of furniture and theming in store for Gnome lovers once player housing debuts.
Kul Tiran
Even though Kul Tirans are Humans, their styles wildly differ - one culture on land, and one at sea. Players choosing a Kul Tiran style aesthetic for their homes would be ready for all sorts of nautical nonsense, from harpoon decorations to small rope details that would make anyone feel right at home on a ship.
It would make sense, then, for the Kul Tiran racial theme to be called something similar to
Nautical
- and this racial identity is already rife with small knickknacks that could easily be transplanted 1:1 in a player's home from the homes and inns of Boralus.
Night Elves
Night Elves have gone through a lot in the past several expansions: losing a home, loved ones, and nearly their leader, then regaining hope and a new home in one fell swoop. It would make sense, then, that a lot of Night Elven aesthetics would long for their old home, and a much simpler time: the city of Darnassus.
Even the walls and floors in Darnassus had (admittedly dated) features, with vines and flowers growing on nearly every surface. It's only fitting that, for a race that once lived in the Worldtree,
Natural
would be a good naming convention - and if players can customize foliage on their own houses, that's an added bonus!
Worgen
The Worgen of Gilneas have one of the most memorable aesthetics of any race in the game - after all, those
暮色港禮帽
still command top dollar on the Auction House for transmogs. Their architecture is no different, with striking dark wood tones, elaborate fireplaces, and elaborate stained glass windows.
If any race were to receive the
Gothic
label, it would be Worgen - the Greymane Estate is proof enough of that. The possibilities for customization are near endless, but if we can't customize grand staircases like this, many players are bound to be disappointed.
Blood Elves & Void Elves
While datamining,
Wowhead discovered
another theme that Blizzard didn't give us an example of quite yet -
Opulent
. What better races to describe this way than the Blood and Void Elves? Neither race is known to practice restraint, seeking extravagance and excess in their elven aesthetics.
Favoring rich colors, exquisite fabrics, and jewel tones, the sleek designs of these sister races would likely diverge in terms of color palette - while the Blood Elves of Silvermoon would favor rubies and golds, the Void Elves of Telogrus Rift find their home in the darkness, with silver and amethyst tones.
Goblins
If there's one word that could describe Goblins and their decorating styles, it would definitely be
Tacky
! Bright, clashing prints, fruit motifs, and so much zebra print and fringe you'd think you're in a thrift shop, Goblins love their knickknacks and piles of gold. And don't forget the strings of fairy lights - however many fairy lights you think are enough,
triple it.
These are some of the oldest examples of Goblin interior design - with the upcoming
Undermine(d) Patch 11.1
, that aesthetic will be on full display in all its updated glory. We'll certainly be seeing more things like
裝飾用庭院紅鶴
in the future - you can count on it!
Nightborne
Different enough from the other Elven races due to their seclusion, the Nightborne still share some common themes of Elvish architecture: sleek design, comfort, and a love of fine materials. Favoring more floor furnishings than the other Elves, it's not uncommon to see piles of plush pillows in Nightborne homes, alongside regular furniture and decorations.
If there's a word that could describe Nightborne interior design in one go, it would likely be
Elegant
. The distinct jewel tones and wall drapes would likely be a staple in player homes, along with the very fun rounded beds!
Tauren & Highmountain Tauren
The two Tauren races share an extremely similar look: both favor a minimalistic style, eschewing bulky furniture for open-air concept spaces and plush hide rugs. The wandering cultures are on full display, with packs and utility everywhere, but not much flair aside from the occasional beaded curtain and brightly-colored sleeping rugs (hooves don't seem to play well with bedframes, because there were next to no actual beds!).
Even the more settled Highmountain dwellings share the same touches - stitched hide walls and roofs, wooden or dirt floors, and sturdy construction. Looking as if they could pick up and go at a moment's notice, the Tauren races could be associated with a possible theme such as
Tribal
.
Trolls & Zandalari Trolls
While much of Troll aesthetic is shared with Orcs, they still have distinct racial touches within their own spaces - not to mention the gilded splendor of the Zandalari. While both the Darkspear and the Zandalari have differed on their in-game paths, Troll heritage shines strong, particularly in terms of motifs such as Vodoo masks, carved furniture, plant life, and a distinct handmade quality that is visible on many small environmental pieces.
It wouldn't be too much of a stretch to see a theme similarly named to
Tropical
or
Carved
, but for Zandalari in particular,
Gaudy
might also be applicable - that's a lot of gold in Dazar'alor!
Undead
By nature, Forsaken housing items share quite a bit of style with Human - after all, Forsaken were all Human once, and people find comfort in the familiar. That doesn't stop them from developing their own aesthetic, though - and Undead housing themes are likely going to be filled with cobwebs, spiders, dusty and faded bookshelves, and everyone's favorite reminder of the living dead: coffins!
There's sure to be more "normal" touches too - after all, not everyone wants to rest their creaky bones in a coffin instead of a bed - but
Spooky
would be a great theme for the Undead as a whole, and would narratively fit quite well.
Vulpera
Vulpera are one of the most difficult races to pin down with a specific style - after all, there are no Vulpera cities, and we never see the inside of their caravan homes. We can, however, generate a few ideas based on some of the small touches around their campsites.
For the Vulpera, everything is ready to pick up and go at a moments notice - meaning their eventual theme might be called something similar to
Nomadic
. Light woods, feathers, and sparse furniture could easily translate to player housing interiors; those fox tails might be questionable, though.
Earthen
While the Earthen share similarities to their Dwarven counterparts from other corners of Azeroth, like the Nightborne, their isolation created a distinct fork in the racial aesthetic path. Their decorations are a bit more lavish - colorful canopies and gold inlays regularly spruce up plain stone and wood, and intricate carvings serve as decorations as much as the gemstones that cover their skins.
One feature is constant in almost all Earthen decorations, however - stone. Thematically, an Earthen category for player housing customizations would likely be named something like
Stonecarved
or
Stonewrought
, and each piece would likely show just as much craftsmanship as those in Dornogal.
Pandaren
The first race that could choose between the Alliance and the Horde, Pandaren maintained their own unique style since their introduction in Mists of Pandaria. "Round" is certainly a good descriptor for large portions of their architecture; while outside, Pandaren buildings have a distinct Chinese influence, taking on aspects of multiple real-world architectural styles such as Jing, Jin, and Dong, inside they tend to favor one of their favorite things: kegs!
For players, this could translate to an
Ancient
theme - the long-hidden Pandaren wood and stonework making its way into beds and shelving inset in the walls themselves.
Dracthyr
Newly unshackled from their class restrictions, the Dracthyr have what could be described as an almost regal style, with
aspects
of all five dragonflights present in their decor. Favoring chunky details and piles of gold, there is a veritable dragon's hoard worth of objects that were introduced in Dragonflight which would look fantastic for any player with a sense of style, and would be aptly described with a
Luxurious
tag.
It's not all luxury though - Dracthyr aesthetics span a wide variety of concepts, such as weaponry from the Black Dragonflight and arcane tomes from the Blue. It's likely that Dracthyr themes will have tons of variety for players to choose from - which is what player housing is all about.
What are your thoughts about racial housing customization themes? Do any of these not fit, or do you hope they make it into the game? Let us know in the comments below!
