Rend Barbarian leveling Overview in Diablo 4
The Rend Barbarian Build can also be called the Pure Bleed Barbarian, in opposition to the Thorn Bleed Barbarian. In this build, we put all our resources into increasing our bleeds and one-shotting elites with a good . Vulnerable, Crowd Control, and Berserking can also be used to further enhance the build's damages. If you like using big burst windows to create large amounts of bleed and make Elites disappear, this build is for you !
Elites will explode in Blood
This build is good for leveling. It may not be the best, but it's pretty safe and is the "proactive" version of bleeds. Building around Thorns is another option for Bleeds, and it scales pretty well into the endgame but it's way less active. Here, your main damage skills are and before level 18. Outside of those, you can get a lot of utility and defensives. It's one of the few Barbarian builds that can weave in and out of combat against tougher bosses in early levels, making it easier to fight without taking a lot of risks.
Later down the line, the great amount of built-in resistances, the incredible Fury generation during burst windows, and the Vulnerable uptime make this build a great boss and elite killer, using the extra-Fury during to stack up as much bleed as possible on a target and making it disappear with a good .
For information about the endgame version of this build, please see our guide:
Rend Barbarian Endgame Overview
Strengths and Weaknesses for Rend Barbarian Leveling
In the first 20 levels, this build is very effective against hard bosses because of its evasive playstyle, but it's not great in the open world as you have nothing to kill random monsters; you just make them bleed and have to wait. You can take some skills from the Thorn ( and ) variation to help you power through the first 18 levels.
But, as soon as level 18 and especially at level 25, when you get your first point in the Ultimate and in Weapon Mastery, you get key ingredients to make your build work. Once it does, it's unstoppable. It's not very effective at taking down small groups of weaker enemies, but you can hunt down elites and bosses and kill them in a second.

How to Play Rend Barbarian
As said before, this build needs set up and mostly comes along when you can burst down a group of enemies. With and , you still have tools to deal good amounts of damage outside of your burst windows but if you really want to make 2 to 3 Elites disappear, you will need to use your cooldowns correctly.
This is a common rotation for the Rend Barbarian. The goal is to stack bleeds on Vulnerable targets and try to maintain Vulnerable by spamming . Once enough bleeds are stacked, inflicts large amounts of damage.
- Base Fury generator; use it to engage in fights and move around on the battlefield.
- Your main way to deal damage. Outside of burst windows (when and are not available) use it when you can to try and get a near 100% Vulnerable uptime with . If you target lost Vulnerable, hit with until you are r at Max Fury or you get a Vulnerable proc and then spend your Fury on .
- The main burst damage from the build. Use it on CD if you need healing through . Outside of burst windows, you can use it when it's available. When you are burning a lot of Fury, use it within 5-6 seconds of your firsts . bleed lasts for 5 seconds, so you can't add more bleed damage after 5 seconds, you only extend the full potential of the bleed. Make it pop with during a Vulnerable Window for max damages.
- Use this shout on Cooldown when you face a tough enemy or group of enemies. The damage amplification is great and it gets us into Berserking, which gives a few nice perks.
- Use this on Cooldown against Elites and Bosses. The Single Target damage is great but it's especially the Fury generation that makes this skill amazing, allowing you to spam without any care.
- This skill has two different purposes: one, to make you Unstoppable and two, to give you a bit more Fury outside for

Barbarian Skills
Leveling Build for Rend Barbarian
This part of the guide focuses on the core of the build -- those skills you need to take and develop most as you approach level 50.
Active Skills for Rend Barbarian
This section includes the six Active skills you'll be using on your Skill Bar, in order of how they appear on the skill tree. Consult the tree for recommendations on which skills should be taken and when.
Lunging Strike
(1/5)
Basic
Modifiers:
is one of the greatest basic skills for Barbarians. The class lacks mobility because we tend to not have enough space in our skill bar to have the damage, survivability, or Fury generation. is a great way to have a nice basic ability that lets us rush through the battlefield while still applying bleeds.
The two modifiers are and , the last one is bringing nice bleeds in addition to the base damage.
Rend
(5/5)
Core
Modifiers:
is your main damage skill, the best way to apply bleeds to groups of enemies. It's the bread and butter of the build and the only way you will spend Fury. With you will be able to increase the Vulnerable uptime on your targets. is a good quality of life modifier for our earlier levels, when we struggle to generate a lot of Fury but can be changed later on with for more damages.
Rallying Cry
(5/5)
Defensive
Modifiers:
serves a lot of purposes. It's a way to get Unstoppable, generate Fury, and get a lot of Fortify as soon as we face a lot of enemies. It isn't the best in anything, but it can do so much for such a little investment that we can't ignore it during the leveling. Way later down the line, with a lot of investment in Paragon and Willpower, we could drop it but again, we haven't tested the build that far.
is a great way to get a lot of Fortify without legendary items. But is also a good way to get a lot more Fury. You can switch around depending on your needs.
War Cry
(1/5)
Brawling
Modifiers:
, like , is a great way to help enhance our damage. Plus it's a reliable way to get Berserking from time to time, which will synergize with some of our passive abilities. It's a very easy ability to use, press the button and we deal more damage. This value is very good.
We take as our modifier, which enhances further the power of . If you still feel like you miss some defensive abilities, you can get .
Rupture
(5/5)
Weapon Mastery
Modifiers:
When getting , you get your first way to deal direct damage to targets and not just wait for them to die out. It's very important to use once you have already stacked up a few bleeds and not as soon as possible.
is here to give a little more AoE. It's not great but it's still something.
acts as a new way to get some sustain. It gives an additional purpose, especially outside of your burst windows. You can also if you have enough sustain and just want to spam even more s.
Call of the Ancients
Ultimate
Modifiers:
is one of the best Ultimate skills we have. Press it as soon as you face Elites or Bosses that might make you struggle, and watch your three new friends destroy the battlefield. It's a bit worse against a scarce group of weaker enemies that might make your Ancients switch targets a lot -- this doesn't help you.
gives a lot of nice crowd control but also helps us generate a lot of Fury, greatly increasing the power of our burst window.
You can also play with here and just skip this ability to move around faster! It's a totally viable option.
Passive Skills for Rend Barbarian
This covers the Passive Skills you'll want for Rend Barbarian, in order by how they appear on the tree. Consult the tree for recommendations on which skills should be taken and when.
Hamstring
(1/3)
is a great way to get stagger on bosses and to kite out enemies. Each time you apply a new bleed, the stagger bar from bosses progresses a little bit and you can use this to your advantage on particularly hard ones. It's also in the way of , needed for this build and synergies with .
Booming Voice
(3/3)
Brawling
- Having an increased shout duration is great as we have 2 out of the 3 Shout skills in our bars. With the extra effects we get from the modifiers, it's nice to have extra time to use them. It is a very simple passive with a simple effect and great benefits.
Pit Fighter
(3/3)
Weapon Mastery
As we always need to be in close with our enemies to fight, getting upgraded to our melee capacity with and resisting damage we can't escape from distant enemies.
Guttural Yell
(3/3)
Brawling
With increasing the uptime of shouts, the value of this passive is increased, getting a great defensive option and increasing the value of our shouts.
Raid Leader
(3/3)
Brawling
Why stop? Now that we invested so many points on shouts, we can continue and get another nice and easy defensive upgrade. All this stuff will allow us to take more offensive options as modifiers for our other abilities.
Gushing Wounds
(1/1)
Key Passive
makes critical strike chances and critical strike damages very important stats for this build, as it doubles the damage done. The Overpowering effect is nice, but not very impactful if we don't try to lean into it - and we don't.
Tempered Fury
(1/3)
Ultimate
This ability is mostly to get to the next passive.
Invigorating Fury
(3/3)
Ultimate
With our build, we will use a ton of Fury, and spend it in no time. This passive is also a great way to have enough to get , the extra attack speed will help us dispense of our Fury faster and have more sustain. If you feel like you still miss sustain, you can still play with .
Cut to the Bone
(3/3)
Weapon Mastery
is a straight upgrade to the build's damages. It's a nice and easy pick and adds another reason to keep Vulnerable up on our targets.
Aggressive Resistance
(1/3)
Brawling
This point is mostly a way to get to the next passive point.
Prolific Fury
(3/3)
Brawling
We will not be in Berserking a lot of times, but while we are in this state we can make the best of it, and get a lot more Fury while Berserking will give let us use as many abilities as we can.
Pressure Point
(3/3)
Brawling
To end our passive choices, we will take these points to help us increase our vulnerable uptime.
Paragon Boards for Rend Barbarian

Best Weapon Techniques Choices for Rend Barbarian
For this build, you want to equip a
Two-Handed Sword
to get a lot more bleeds and physical damage linked to bleeds. As for the Weapon Technique Slot, the best weapon to slot is the Two-Handed Axe for the extra Vulnerable Damage.
How to Swap Weapons as a Barbarian in Diablo 4
While leveling, Barbarians will likely come across Legendary Aspects that provide a benefit after swapping weapons, such as and . These Aspects require the Barbarian to use damage-dealing abilities assigned to different weapons from their arsenal. This is done through assigning specific weapons to abilities like and through the Skill Assignment pane. Open your character window, navigate to the Abilities tab, and choose Skill Assignment. From there, you'll want to hover over a damage-dealing skill and press the key or button that shows up next to Switch Weapon. The Key Passive also uses the weapon swapping mechanic, and because of the three different bonuses, it requires the use of three active skills that deal damage: one skill assigned to your Two-Handed Bludgeoning Weapon, one assigned to your Two-Handed Slashing Weapon, and one assigned to your Dual-Wield Weapons. It's also important to note that some skills, such as and , will only work with a specific type of weapon. For more information about Weapon Techniques, please see our guide:

Rend Barbarian Best Leveling Gear for Diablo 4
Although you will depend on random drops for most of your gear, you will have a variety of choices available to you. You can also make informed decisions about whether an apparent upgrade is better for you based on other properties. You may even find yourself in a position of getting a build-defining Legendary Aspect drop -- for a build different from your own. In those cases, it may be worth considering changing builds as you level, since a respec is cheap at this stage.
Best Legendary Aspects from Dungeons
While you can't rely on getting a Legendary Aspect from a drop, you can find Legendaries in other ways. The good news is that there are Legendary Aspects you can acquire early on from dungeons, which are then transcribed into your Codex of Power. Aspects from the first three zones -- Fractured Peaks, Dry Steppes, and Scosglen -- can be farmed very early on.
Best Farmed Legendary Aspects
Dark Ravine, Dry Steppes
Maulwood, Fractured Peaks
Kor Dragan Barracks, Fractured Peaks
Underroot, Scosglen
Buried Halls, Dry Steppes
Sirroco Caverns, Kehjistan
All aspects listed here are really good and pretty easy to get with nice benefits, especially good damage upgrades. Here are the three highlights of those legendary aspects.
is a great way to get more tankiness easily and pretty early on, as it gives a lot of damage reduction at the "cost" of casting rather often, which we are already doing to maintain .
will reduce our Fury cost greatly, making our burst window stronger because we will be able to cast more on enemies.
Regarding the other choices, they are here to bring more Fury generation, defensive, or even crowd controls with which will interact with a lot more legendary powers later down the line.
Codex of Power Overview
Best Dropped Legendary Aspects
While we shouldn't have to rely on a dropped Aspect for a leveling build, these are some dropped Legendaries that are great for the build. You'll want to keep your eyes out for these.
is one of the best Barbarians aspects we can get, a lot of builds are using a lot of shouts, and we have 2 great shouts here that get us a lot of benefits. is also a great way to get more damage, and in the endgame, we will get way too much Fury so better get some advantage out of it! Finally, is good so we can get more s.
Occultist Crafting Overview Legendary Aspects Guide Barbarian Legendary Aspects
Rend Barbarian Best Weapon Choices
Weapons are important to all classes in Diablo 4, since all player damage output keys off weapon damage. Therefore, it's very important to keep your weapon updated by replacing it regularly. Beyond that, Weapons also have Inherent Physical Characteristics native to that weapon type, so there often is a "best" weapon for a particular build.
Imprinting a two-handed weapon with a Legendary Aspect will increase that Legendary's variable power by 100%. Be sure to use Legendaries here that can benefit from it; one that just gives a flat +2 to Skill Ranks isn't going to give +4 when put onto a two-hander. The key here is to look at the variable (the numbers in blue text with a range) to see what the effect will be.
For Barbarians, we just depend on our Weapon Techniques. Apply the most important offensive Weapon Aspects to the Two-Handed weapons to increase their powers. Priorities Two Handed Sword for your slashing weapons.
Gear and Itemization Overview Blacksmith Guide
Rend Barbarian Best Leveling Gems
Gems fit into gear sockets and add bonuses depending on whether they are in Armor, Weapons, or Jewelry. Starting at level 20, you'll be able to combine Gems to upgrade them to higher quality and higher bonuses.
Gems come in various qualities from Chipped to Royal. While the gem properties do not change, the traits improve with higher quality. Therefore, while we list only one quality of gem here for listing purposes, you should always socket the highest level gem you can get and equip at your level.
Armor Gems
We will spend a lot of time being Fortified. Taking reduced damage while Fortified helps with that and makes us way more tanky. It's the best defensive option on Armor.
Weapon Gems
Our enemies will bleed for the majority of the fight, meaning this is a simple damage upgrade that doesn't require us to do much outside of just playing as we would play without this gem.
Jewelry Gems
Resistances now work as intended. We will get a lot of armor from our aspects and our stats, so we need a bit of Elemental resistances. While we recommend Diamonds as a default for Resistance gems, you should always check your Resistances to see if any of them are capped (these will show up in green text). If one or two other Resistances are capped, you may consider replacing one or more of the Diamonds with specific Resistance gems to shore up weaknesses.

I was under the impression that while Flay stacks, Rend does not, only getting reapplied. It seems like this guide implies that it does stack though.

Wowhead needs some Hardcore leveling guides. Icy veins has none, and can't seem to find anywhere else either.

- Drop Iron skin, put its points in
You can't.
It requires that 3 points be put in Defense Skills or somewhere higher to reach the Weapon Mastery node.
Even looking much deeper into the guide I can see that your Replace instructions on step 30 also won't work.

Guys, WTF. This entire build changed overnight. Yesterday (08/14) was Flay, today (08/15) is Lunging Strike, and there were tons of updates everywhere.
A disclaimer would have been nice :)

Dear WowHead, the skill order on all of these guides is gone now. The embedded skill tree is blank for all of them (it worked a couple of days ago). I can still see the skill tree if I open it in the skill calculator but it does not show me the skill order. Kind a bummer because I was using this for my build as I play and I didn't take a screenshot of the skill order... :( Can you please fix it? Thanks!
