In order to transfer your character's Renown progress into Diablo 4's first season, you'll need to have a character that you can actually log into. If you're currently playing Diablo 4 in Hardcore mode, you will need to keep your character alive until July 18th, in order to benefit from the Area discovery and Altars of Lilith Renown transfer beginning in Season of the Malignant.
Season 1 Developer Update Summary Get a Head Start on Renown for Season 1
After last week's
Developer Update Livestream
, Diablo 4 Associate Game Director,
Joseph Piepiora
, clarified that in order for a Hardcore character to transfer their Renown earned by uncovering the map and claiming Altars of Lilith, the character would need to remain alive until the next patch - on July 18th. Once players have downloaded this patch and logged into their characters, they will begin sharing Renown progress with all other characters on the account. However, if a Hardcore character died before this date, a player will not be able to log in on this character, and therefore the progress would not be shared with other characters on the account.
With Season of the Malignant starting next week, the developers have suggested that this might be the best time to take a break from Diablo 4. This might be especially true if you have a Hardcore character who has completed their Altars of Lilith and Area discovery. Being able to share this progress with other characters after the patch on July 18th will be a great benefit to new characters when Season of the Malignant is released on July 20th!
