This guide also covers gearing strategies for leveling, including the best Legendary Aspects to farm from dungeons in both lower-level and higher-level zones. We also direct you to which Gear Affixes and gems are most desirable for the Rapid Fire Rogue.
Rapid Fire Rogue Overview in Diablo 4
is a fun, satisfying ranged ability that machine-guns bad guys, unloading bolts in a visceral blast of death. We pair our with as a Combo Point Builder, then a pinch of and a dash of...well, , all come together in this magnificent recipe for success. Serve it up with your choice of trap and season with . Delicious!
This build uses to build
Combo Points
, apply Vulnerable, and get the enemies out of your face before unleashing to spend the Combo Points and do extra against Vulnerable opponents. Adding to the mix increases damage while adding in an additional AoE component and another source of Vulnerable. We use for positioning, and as our Ultimate for big damage and a method to group enemies together nice and tight. Choosing as our Key Passive allows us to take advantage of packed together Vulnerable enemies to do even more AoE damage.
If you are looking for a Rogue build that is effective in any content and excels in Dungeons, Rapid Fire Rogue is your build.
Rapid Fire is an excellent priority target ability. At its most basic, it shoots out 5 arrows in a straight line with each use. Its counterpart, Barrage, does the same in a fan rather than a straight line. This gives Barrage an area of effect advantage while giving Rapid Fire all of the priority and single-target advantages. Using Rapid Fire as the base for our all-purpose leveling build requires that we supplement it with AoE and survivability skills.
For information about the endgame version of this build, please see our guide:
Rapid Fire Rogue Endgame Overview
Strengths and Weaknesses for Rapid Fire Rogue
Our Rapid Fire Rogue build is easy and satisfying to play. Enemies can be drilled down in short order and we add in AoE and survivability skills to round out the build's capabilities.
The build suffers a little bit for AoE early on and it can be possible to be overwhelmed by mobs if not positioned well. That issue is easily mitigated with levels as we earn more Skill Points to allocate to movement and survivability.
Because Rapid fire shoots straight, it will drill the enemy that you are aiming at, but that enemy can easily block a priority target behind it. This can be mitigated with good movement choices and Forceful Arrow which we take, not only as a filler and Combo Point generator ability, but also because it knocks enemies back, often allowing you better access to their more powerful buddies behind them.
The only real issue with Rapid Fire is that it can be blocked by terrain very easily; you think you are drilling the enemy, but all of your shots go straight into that bush that you think you aren't actually standing behind. Once you get a good understanding of the angles that you can fire from, this shouldn't be too great an issue.

How to Play Rapid Fire Rogue
This build uses to
build Combo Points
, apply Vulnerable, and get enemies out of your face before unleashing to
spend your Combo Points
. Adding to the mix increases damage while adding in an additional AoE component and another source of Vulnerable. We use for positioning, and as our Ultimate. This huge AoE actually pulls enemies into it, grouping them up nicely for explosions. Choosing as our Key Passive allows us to take advantage of Vulnerable, grouped-up enemies to do even more AoE damage.
Note: Because this build lacks AoE damage at lower levels, we take early, and then, once we have enough skill points, back-track and replace with .
This is a common rotation for the Rapid Fire Rogue. The goal is to get 3 combo points, drop your trap, fire up your Imbuement, and take enemies down with Rapid Fire.
Behind the scenes, you are applying Vulnerable along with Knock Backs and Knock Downs while increasing your Critical Strike Chance and Damage, grouping enemies up, and then setting off chain explosions for massive AoE.
- Dark Shroud is your on-use defensive ability. Use this before the fight begins, or as soon as possible after. Use on cooldown and try to keep at least 4 shadows up as much as possible.
or - Drop your trap for extra damage and enemy control.
- Shadow Imbuement amps up Rapid Fire and Dash. You have 2 charges of Shadow Imbuement. Always use it before using Rapid Fire.
- Forceful Arrow is your Combo Point builder. Build 3 Combo Points while Knocking Back enemies and making them Vulnerable.
- Rapid Fire is your Combo Point spender and main damage skill. Always use it with 3 Combo Points and an Imbuement charge. Prioritize Vulnerable enemies.
- Use Dash to position yourself optimally or to get out of bad.

Leveling Build for Rapid Fire Rogue
This part of the guide focuses on the core of the build -- those skills you need to take and develop most as you approach level 50.
When you get your 27th Point, remove .
Active Skills for Rapid Fire Rogue
This section includes the six Active skills you'll be using on your Skill Bar, in order of how they appear on the skill tree. Consult the tree for recommendations on which skills should be taken and when.
Forceful Arrow
(5/5)
Basic
Modifiers:
's primary function is to build Combo Points. It does not benefit from , so you can use it without using up Imbuement charges. The modifiers also add an increased Critical Strike chance and will Knock Back non-elite enemies who Knock Down any of their buddies that they may fly into - just like bowling! You will be using this ability more than any other. Line up your targets for maximum effect, knock them back to get them out of your face, and most importantly, build 3 Combo Points.
Get used to counting to 3: , , , , repeat.
We are taking the modifier for the Knock Back, Knock Down effect. This is not a melee build and we like our enemies to keep their distance. Also, we will be adding the passive further down the tree to increase our Critical Strike Chance against Knocked Back and Knocked Down targets. Note that Knock Back is not considered Crowd Control, but Knock Down is, so Knock Down will trigger any CC bonuses you may pick up. The modifier adds the increased Critical Strike chance.
Rapid Fire
(5/5)
Core
Modifiers:
is our main damage skill. For maximum effect, you will want to use it with
3 Combo Points
and an
Imbuement charge
. Note that Rapid Fire is an effective single-target ability, however, if your target dies before the last shot is fired, it will continue to do damage to targets behind your initial target. What this means is you ideally want to line enemies up just like you do with , creating a nice synergy between the two. That said, if there are lower-priority enemies between you and your priority target, you can use at a slight angle to push them out of the way so that you can drill the big guy with . Experiment and get used to positional refinements to put the bad guys right where you want them.
costs Energy, but you can mitigate that cost by taking and hitting Vulnerable targets, which you are creating with every 3rd shot of Forceful Arrow. This returns about 60% of the Energy you spend. increases your Critical Strike chance, which is a secondary focus in this build.
Dash
(1/5)
Agility
Modifiers:
is our mobility skill. We are only taking 1 point here because we only care about being able to move with it - anything else is gravy. On its own, you will want to use it to position yourself optimally or to get out of bad. You can even use it to run away in a pinch!
does damage and allows you unhampered movement so you can run through enemies. When you do, those enemies take extra damage from your critical strikes. Like and , is most effective on enemies that are lined up, again helping your abilities work together. But wait, there's more: is also an Imbueable skill so it will use a charge of and spread that bomb to any enemy it hits. This seems like a good thing, and it is, but is not one of our primary damage-dealing abilities and it is better to prioritize using those charges for Rapid Fire wherever possible.
One more note about is that it is the only place where we actively use our melee weapons. If you luck out and get a really nice dagger or sword, you can tweak the build to put more points into and take better advantage of it.
We take the modifier for a nice little low-cost Critical Strike Damage debuff.
Dark Shroud
(5/5)
Subterfuge
Modifiers:
is a superior on-use defensive ability. If you are expecting a fight (a.k.a. If you are not in town), put it up so that you have those shadows spinning before you ever get hit. If you get caught with your Shroud down, so to speak, hit that button and get it up first. After that, use on cooldown in most situations. If you are in a boss fight and you know a big combo is coming, you can hold for that, but remember - it has 5 uses before it drops and as long as you have 4 uses remaining, you get extra Critical Strike Chance, so live it, love it, use it.
The modifiers we have chosen are which is a defensive for your defensive, effectively granting you a chance at a free extra Shadow. gives us another source of extra Critical Strike Chance as we keep our Shadows rolling.
Poison Trap
(5/5)
Subterfuge
Modifiers:
is our AoE damage at lower levels. puts a very nice DoT on enemies that step into it. This is nice because it means they don't have to stay in the trap to take damage. Place a trap in a doorway or narrow passageway for maximum effect and then back up and watch every single enemy step into it to get to you.
The mods we take here Knock Down enemies, which you know we love, and also give us a chance to reset the cooldown on both and .
Ultimately we want to be our trap of choice, but it only takes around 12 points to get to whereas it takes 23 to get to . You will want this for the damage and the playstyle long before you get to , so we take it early and replace it later.
Shadow Imbuement
(5/5)
Imbuement
Modifiers:
amps up your Imbueable abilities, changing their damage to Shadow Damage, putting a timer on enemies, and increasing your Critical Strike chance. If an enemy dies before the timer runs out, they explode, dealing AoE damage and spreading Vulnerable to their buddies. If an enemy survives the timer running out, the bomb will do damage to that enemy only. It's not wasted, and it is worth putting on enemies with large health pools as well.
You have 2 charges of . The abilities that are enhanced by it are and . In a big fight, use on cooldown, otherwise, use judiciously for maximum effect. In this build, while it isn't the end of the world, or even bad, to use a charge on , you will want to make sure that always gets a charge.
For modifiers, we are taking which gives us more Critical Strike Chance, but more importantly, opens up which provides an additional source of Vulnerable status effect.
Death Trap
(1/1)
Ultimate
Modifiers:
is a huge trap that actually grabs enemies and pulls them in. Once it's triggered, it pulls in everything it can reach. It then does massive Shadow Damage to enemies who are beautifully stacked up to allow the explosions from to work together with more explosions from your Key Passive to erase your enemies from the face of Sanctuary.
We take both available modifiers, and , to include the free enemy stack up and the cooldown reduction.
Passive Skills for Rapid Fire Rogue
This covers the Passive Skills you'll want for Rapid Fire Rogue, in order by how they appear on the tree. Consult the tree for recommendations on which skills should be taken and when.
Sturdy
(3/3)
Core
Despite our best efforts, occasionally someone doesn't take a to the face and manages to close with us. Elites don't take the knockback and they do like to get personal. Close Damage Reduction is a good thing.
Siphoning Strikes
(3/3)
Core
The other advantage to taking is that it opens up the node, which provides us with a nice little heal.
Weapon Mastery
(3/3)
Agility
gives a nice damage bonus that plays to our strengths, with Bows doing extra damage to Vulnerable enemies and Crossbows doing increased Critical Strike Damage. You will always have either a Bow or a Crossbow equipped.
Concussive
(3/3)
Agility
plays right into our strengths, giving us more Critical Strike Chance against the enemies Knocked Back or Knocked Down with our .
Exploit
(1/3)
Subterfuge
We take 1 point in to open up the node -but we won't say no to a little extra damage.
Malice
(3/3)
Subterfuge
This build is all about making enemies Vulnerable, so this passive is right up our street. A little goes a long way!
Shadow Crash
(1/3)
Imbuement
We take 1 point of to open up the node.
Consuming Shadows
(1/3)
Imbuement
Consuming Shadows gives us increased Energy generation every time we use Shadow Imbuement. Every enemy killed while we have Imbuement up helps us not have to worry about energy starvation. already helps out our Energy. This is a tweakable node. If you feel you are running out of energy, drop a point or two out of something like to get more here. Alternatively, if you are Energy capping, spend the point elsewhere.
Precision Imbuement
(3/3)
Imbuement
keeps with our Critical Strike build.
Trap Mastery
(3/3)
Ultimate
This Skill plays right into our hand, giving increased Critical Strike Chance against Vulnerable and Knocked Down enemies every time springs.
Victimize
(1/1)
Key Passive
is our Key Passive. This skill synergizes with every single skill that we have taken that causes Vulnerable, and turns those Vulnerable enemies into potential bombs, giving us even more AoE.
Paragon Boards for Rapid Fire Rogue
Players earn their first Paragon point at level 50. Since this leveling guide covers up through level 50, you'll need to look at our Endgame Paragon guides. For our recommendations for Paragon Boards, including best boards, Glyphs, and paths through Rare nodes, please see the Rapid Fire Rogue Endgame Paragon guide:
Rapid Fire Rogue Best Paragon Boards
Best Specialization Choices for Rapid Fire Rogue
Rapid Fire Rogue uses the
Combo Points
Specialization. This synergizes beautifully with which gives a Combo Point on each shot and adds increased Critical Strike Chance and Vulnerable on every third shot. This means that when you use your you not only boost it with 3 Combo Points, but you also soften up the target with a possible Crit and get all of that lovely Vulnerable damage. Later in the build we take , which uses that Vulnerable condition to potentially cause explosions and add to our AoE capability.
If you don't want to worry about the Combo Point mini-game, the Preparation specialization is a very viable alternative choice.

Rapid Fire Rogue Best Leveling Gear for Diablo 4
Although you will depend on random drops for most of your gear, you will have a variety of choices available to you. You can also make informed decisions about whether an apparent upgrade is better for you based on other properties. You may even find yourself in a position of getting a build-defining Legendary Aspect drop -- for a build different from your own. In those cases, it may be worth considering changing builds as you level, since a respec is cheap at this stage.
Best Legendary Aspects from Dungeons
While you can't rely on getting a Legendary Aspect from a drop, you can find Legendaries in other ways. The good news is that there are Legendary Aspects you can acquire early on from dungeons, which are then transcribed into your Codex of Power.
Best Farmed Legendary Aspects
Underroot, Scosglen
Ancient's Lament, Dry Steppes
Whispering Vault, Dry Steppes
Lost Archives, Fractured Peaks
Caldera Gate, Fractured Peaks
Shifting City, Dry Steppes
Sanguine Chapel, Fractured Peaks
While leveling, your Aspect needs will likely be different from your Endgame Aspect needs. As you level and add skills, you will close gaps in your build. Many of these recommendations will help you out until your build can support the function on its own. At that point you can equip an Aspect that either fills another gap or just straight out does more damage. Your gearing and any Aspects that drop for you will also affect what you may need to go and pick up. Tailor these suggestions to you.
will always be good for this build. Our rotation is 3 Basic Skills and then a Core Skill so this Aspect is perfect for us. allows our active mitigation to do passive AoE damage. What's not to like? also turns a regular button push into even more damage. This will trigger every time you use or .
Elite enemies can hit pretty hard, and until we get and other damage mitigation passives up to a decent level, can be invaluable. is a get-out-of-jail-free card. While your defensive mitigation is low, you may need to get out of a situation, and this is great. It is also very situational so if you don't struggle with being Crowd Controlled, this may be a lower priority.
If you are feeling energy-starved, you can pick up and/or . Either of these will help out. Ideally, you want to be available every time you need it, so make sure that your Energy regeneration matches your style.
Codex of Power Overview
Best Dropped Legendary Aspects
While we shouldn't have to rely on a dropped Aspect for a leveling build, these are some dropped Legendaries that are great for the build. You'll want to keep your eyes out for these.
can save your life as well as the lives of friendly players around you. Better yet, this Aspect can easily be obtained by completing Act I of the Campaign. It is a reward from the final boss fight in this Act.
and play perfectly into our Skills. gives a chance to do more damage, and gives us a pretty neat passive heal.

Rapid Fire Rogue Best Weapon Choices
Weapons are important to all classes in Diablo 4, since all player damage output keys off weapon damage. Therefore, it's very important to keep your weapon updated by replacing it regularly. Beyond that, Weapons also have Inherent Physical Characteristics native to that weapon type, so there often is a "best" weapon for a particular build.
You will want to find yourself a
Crossbow
. You can certainly use a Bow while you are looking for a Crossbow, but Crossbows do additional Vulnerable damage and since we are also taking which gives Crossbows increased Critical Strike Damage, this is the way to go. A Bow will give you bonus damage to distant enemies, which is nice, and bonus damage to Vulnerable enemies, which is also nice, but not all enemies will be distant and while the Bow is viable, the Crossbow wins out overall.
Our build does not use melee weapons except for when we . This means that the Dagger characteristic, bonus Damage to Close Enemies along with increased damage to Healthy enemies from , allow us to use Daggers to best effect. Swords will also be just fine, however. Melee is not our primary damage style.
Gear and Itemization Overview Blacksmith Guide
Rapid Fire Rogue Best Leveling Gems
Gems fit into gear sockets and add bonuses depending on whether they are in Armor, Weapons, or Jewelry. Starting at level 20, you'll be able to combine Gems to upgrade them to higher quality and higher bonuses.
Gems come in various qualities from Chipped to Royal. While the gem properties do not change, the traits improve with higher quality. Therefore, while we list only one quality of gem here for listing purposes, you should always socket the highest level gem you can get and equip at your level.
Armor Gems
The Rapid Fire Rogue is a simple being. We don't go in for fancy shenanigans like Fortify, so we'll just take a basic Maximum Life increase from a Ruby, thank you.
Weapon Gems
Emeralds set in weapons do Critical Strike Damage to Vulnerable enemies and that is exactly what the Rapid Fire Rogue is all about.
Jewelry Gems
While you are leveling, Skulls are an excellent choice for their additional armor contribution. As you move towards endgame you may want to think about Diamonds for Elemental Resistance as well.
Diamonds give Resistance to All Elements. This is great, but there are caps on Elemental Resistance and you can expect some contributions from your gear as well. Use Diamonds until you are capped on one, and then use other gems to shore up your Elemental Resistance weaknesses. A capped Resistance will show in green text on your Character Interface.
