Corpse Explosion Necromancer Overview in Diablo 4
As a slight word of caution, this variation of Necromancer may prove to be a bit too... explosive for some. Firing off a celebratory rain of limbs whilst any unwanted guests venturing towards you to witness what commotion you're causing merely becomes a part of the show. How lovely. Yet, you're not alone in this performance, as your undead horde takes center stage alongside you —although the spotlight is mostly yours. So grab your drink, get some snacks, and pick a seat — it's time for some fireworks!
Wombo Combo. More Cooldown Reduction makes it even faster!
The Corpse Explosion Necromancer is for players who wish to deal damage themselves, while also having their Minions do their own part. Huge single-target and AoE damage, nonstop Crowd Control, consistently achieving Mastery on events, and hardly having to move for bosses — all of this can be yours as you sit safely behind a wall of Minions.

How to Play Corpse Explosion Necromancer
Our opener tends to vary from engagement to engagement, and it often depends on what feels most comfortable for the player, or the situation at hand. It will generally boil down to decision-making, yet it remains flexible without negatively impacting the user. Our abilities come off cooldown so rapidly that we take on more of a 'priority' style gameplay, rather than a strict set of guidelines to follow. Having said that, some skills have a higher priority than others which you'll see listed below.
This is a flexible priority list for the Corpse Explosion Necromancer. The goal is to have everything Cursed with Decrepify, pull everything in with Corpse Tendrils, then use your Golem's ability whilst weaving in Corpse Explosions, finally buffing you and your minions with a single Blight pool, and Raise Skeleton for extra Minion damage.
- Cursing initiates combat for Minions, and gives us powerful boons. Make sure it's always active.
- May be used if you do not have a Corpse already available, or to start bringing enemies towards you. Make sure the pool is always below what you're attacking.
- This is constantly our setup to begin the wombo combo. Once you have a Corpse, this immediately takes top priority amongst any other skill besides Decrepify if you haven't already applied it.
- If your Golem is nearby, then this may switch priorities with Blight as the ability it provides is lethal, and may assure a Corpse is spawned. Otherwise, wait for Tendrils to pull everything in.
- You'll be spamming this once your setup is done, and whenever a Corpse is available between other Cooldowns. This is your bread and butter.
- Periodically try to keep this buff active. It may also be used right before your Golem's ability. On single-target fights, this raises significantly in value.

Leveling Build for Corpse Explosion Necromancer
This part of the guide focuses on the core of the build -- those skills you need to take and develop most as you approach level 50.
Active Skills for Corpse Explosion Necromancer
This section includes the six Active skills you'll be using on your Skill Bar, in order of how they appear on the skill tree. Consult the tree for recommendations on which skills should be taken and when.
Blight
(1/5)
Core
Modifiers:
Despite being a Core Skill, Blight is quite low on our priority list due to us having an extremely high cooldown refresh rate. This is in addition to Corpse Explosion being available whenever we have a Corpse. Still, the damage increase it offers makes it attractive enough where we'll want to keep a pool of Blight underneath tough enemies whenever we can.
Since our chosen modifier increases Minion damage, on single-target fights you'll want to make sure you have bosses standing within the pool since our Minions do most of our heavy lifting during such encounters. This also has a bit of fancy footwork you can do. Specifically, after Corpse Tendrils pulls everything in, you can quickly throw a Blight to amplify the damage from our Golem's active ability.
Corpse Explosion
(5/5)
Corpse & Macabre
Modifiers:
We come to our main spammable source of damage: Corpse Explosion. Our chosen modifier — — places pools on the ground, which can stack, resulting in tough enemies melting from existence. This also is the reason you're able to stand still during events and achieve mastery with relative ease. The casting animation is incredibly quick, and we tend to spawn Corpses at a rapid pace too, causing the ground to go from dirt to pools of death that kill things nearly the moment they spawn.
Decrepify
(1/5)
Curse
Modifiers:
Decrepify will always be the first button you hit when fighting enemies. It does a few things, provides Damage Reduction, places a Slow which counts as a source of Crowd Control, and also sends your minions to engage a group of enemies when combat has not yet been started. However, it will not allow you to control your Minions once combat has begun.
Once everything is pulled in with Corpse Tendrils, your Golem's ability activates the chance for your cooldowns to be reduced by 1 second per enemy hit. Since the vast majority of your fights will be AoE, this often results in the Golem's button on your bars coming right back off cooldown. This chance also applies to every attack that's hitting your enemies, causing Decrepify to enable the entire build.
Corpse Tendrils
(1/5)
Corpse & Macabre
Modifiers:
Corpse Tendrils pulls everything in, and our chosen modifier causes everything hit to become Vulnerable. This enables our combo nearly as much as Decrepify does, since it allows our Golem to hit every enemy that's been pulled together, which procs the chance for our Cooldowns to be lowered for each enemy hit by Decrepify.
Our abilities already come back up very fast due to the mechanic described above. This allows us to constantly be casting Corpse Tendrils and thus applying Vulnerability.
Golem
(1/1)
Summoning
Golem's active ability depends on the variation players decide to use. Generally, however, it causes your Golem to do a large burst of damage, and is part of our "Wombo Combo." Why is it a Wombo Combo? Well, once things are pulled together with Tendrils, the Golem does his active ability and our high cooldown reduction has us pressing it over and over. As such, the combo is so lethal once things are caught in our web, their lights are out.
Using Golem also causes us to become Unstoppable.
Raise Skeleton
(1/1)
Summoning
Despite its name, this also causes your Golem to heal, and increases their damage for the duration. You'll want to apply this often to insure your Minions aren't going to die. Nevertheless on single-target fights, this buff will absolutely want to be kept rolling since our Minions tend to deal the vast majority of our single-target damage.
Blood Mist
(1/5)
Corpse & Macabre
Note: We do not take Blood Mist in this build, yet it is valuable enough for very specific scenarios that it's worth mentioning, i.e., for the Capstone Boss or a World Boss. In order to gain this skill, you'll be dropping a single point from , then placing it into Blood Mist. This also will remove Corpse Tendrils from your bar. Having this will allow you to completely bypass certain mechanics those bosses will do which may kill you outright. If you feel comfortable enough without it, then this is not needed, yet the choice is there.
Passive Skills for Corpse Explosion Necromancer
This covers the Passive Skills you'll want for Corpse Explosion Necromancer, in order by how they appear on the tree. Consult the tree for recommendations on which skills should be taken and when.
Hewed Flesh
(3/3)
Core
Hewed Flesh allows you to produce enough Corpses to fuel both your Raise Skeleton and Corpse Explosion on Bosses, as well as for smaller engagements when large groups of enemies are not readily available.
Skeletal Warrior Mastery
(3/3)
Corpse & Macabre
This not only increases damage but more importantly makes your Skeletal Warriors tankier. Until we reach this talent, you'll often see them dying. However, they're merely a tool for distraction early on. Once we have our full points within this passive, their damage is respectable, yet not enough to force points here earlier than listed.
Grim Harvest
(1/3)
Corpse & Macabre
With how quickly Corpse Explosion casts, this passive can really bring in the Essence. However, we truthfully aren't very reliant on spending Essence, yet we have more than enough for when we do. One point allows us to reach the next passive.
Fueled by Death
(3/3)
Corpse & Macabre
Our entire build is based around... well... exploding Corpses, which means this Passive will constantly be running. It is a very nice, very evil way of making our build just a little bit stronger.
Death's Embrace
(3/3)
Curse
"Close" is actually much farther than one might think. This Passives bonuses will be active quite often, and if something manages to reach us in Melee range, those are the moments we need Damage Reduction the most.
Amplify Damage
(3/3)
Curse
Keeping Decrepify active is already our top priority, and this simply makes it that much more special.
Skeletal Mage Mastery
(3/3)
Curse
Right out of the gate, our Skeletal Mages' damage is noticeable. Once we place full points into this, these magical abominations can really dish out some serious punishment.
Reaper's Pursuit
(1/3)
Corpse & Macabre
Corpse Explosion deals Darkness damage with our chosen modifier, resulting in this Passive actively giving us a nice little speed boost. Still, we only take 1 point here to move onto other Passives.
Gloom
(3/3)
Corpse & Macabre
Once more, Corpse Explosion synergizes amazingly with another Passive. Since we're constantly placing Darkness pools, this rapidly amplifies towards its maximum stacks — supercharging us even further.
Terror
(3/3)
Corpse & Macabre
We check all the requirements for this Passive. We've got the Slow, the Stun, and the Immobilization, and we're constantly dealing Darkness damage giving us another massive damage increase.
Golem Mastery
(3/3)
Ultimate
Our Golem can be considered as our dancing partner for our journey. Surpassing us in damage during our AoE wombo combo, so we buff them up, and give them a new pair of shoes to make sure they're as powerful as possible.
Inspiring Leader
(3/3)
Ultimate
Skeletal Mages carry a lot of our single-target damage, and Attack Speed also affects our Corpse Explosion casting speed, making this a beautiful Passive for our build overall.
Bonded in Essence
(1/3)
Ultimate
More healing allows our Minions to survive a bit better, which is always a plus.
Death's Defense
(3/3)
Ultimate
Once we have full points into this passive, it will take us not actively healing our Minions, and a barrage of enemy attacks rapidly connecting, to kill them. This changes them from bags of bones to an unwavering Army of Undeath.
Hellbent Commander
(3/3)
Ultimate
We're more often than not near our Golem, as well as our Skeletal Warriors. And our Skeletal Mages have a very bad habit of being in Melee range, which means this passive is active very often.
Shadowblight
(1/1)
Key Passives
allows this to constantly be ticking forward, enabling us to fully benefit from this Key Passive.

Corpse Explosion Necromancer Best Leveling Gear for Diablo 4
Although you will depend on random drops for most of your gear, you will have a variety of choices available to you. You can also make informed decisions about whether an apparent upgrade is better for you based on other properties. You may even find yourself in a position of getting a build-defining Legendary Aspect drop -- for a build different from your own. In those cases, it may be worth considering changing builds as you level, since a respec is cheap at this stage.
Best Legendary Aspects from Dungeons
While you can't rely on getting a Legendary Aspect from a drop, you can find Legendaries in other ways. The good news is that there are Legendary Aspects you can acquire early on from dungeons, which are then transcribed into your Codex of Power. Aspects from the first three zones -- Fractured Peaks, Dry Steppes, and Scosglen -- can be farmed very early on.
Best Farmed Legendary Aspects
Halls of the Damned, Kehjistan
Lost Archives, Fractured Peaks
Aldurwood, Scosglen
Corrupted Grotto, Kehjistan
Akkhan's Grasp, Hawezar
These are all solid choices until you can find some of the more difficult ones. You will keep many of these Aspects until you find a better version of the exact same one. The strongest being , which will go on your Amulet since you replace weapons so often while leveling.
Codex of Power Overview
Best Dropped Legendary Aspects
While we shouldn't have to rely on a dropped Aspect for a leveling build, these are some dropped Legendaries that are great for the build. You'll want to keep your eyes out for these.
Our Minions tend to handle our single-target damage the most, and all of these raise the level in which they do it. Having the extra Minions alone is noticeable, and the boost to their Attack Speed really puts things over the top.

Corpse Explosion Necromancer Best Weapon Choices
Weapons are important to all classes in Diablo 4, since all player damage output keys off weapon damage. Therefore, it's very important to keep your weapon updated by replacing it regularly. Beyond that, Weapons also have Inherent Physical Characteristics native to that weapon type, so there often is a "best" weapon for a particular build.
Imprinting a two-handed weapon with a Legendary Aspect will increase that Legendary's variable power by 100%. Be sure to use Legendaries here that can benefit from it; one that just gives a flat +2 to Skill Ranks isn't going to give +4 when put onto a two-hander. The key here is to look at the variable (the numbers in blue text with a range) to see what the effect will be.
You should be aiming for the highest weapon damage you can find as you level. However if you have a choice, then grab a Wand and a Focus as the slightly quicker casting speed, Lucky Hit, and extra Cooldown Reduction compliments this build well. This also allows an extra Legendary Aspect which is always nice.
Gear and Itemization Overview Blacksmith Guide
Corpse Explosion Necromancer Best Leveling Gems
Gems fit into gear sockets and add bonuses depending on whether they are in Armor, Weapons, or Jewelry. Starting at level 20, you'll be able to combine Gems to upgrade them to higher quality and higher bonuses.
Gems come in various qualities from Chipped to Royal. While the gem properties do not change, the traits improve with higher quality. Therefore, while we list only one quality of gem here for listing purposes, you should always socket the highest level gem you can get and equip at your level.
Weapon Gems
Sapphires are our first choice although Emeralds will suffice if we haven't found one quite yet.
Armor Gems
More life is our ideal choice here as it will influence our gameplay overall, rather than in specific circumstances, helping to prevent the one shot from out of nowhere.
Jewelry Gems
Skulls while leveling will generally offer the strongest bonus since there isn't a lot of spells being thrown by enemies. However it varies, and Diamonds are the generic Resistance options yet one should adjust their gems based on what they're currently fighting or struggling with.
