This Wowhead build guide for the Thorns Barbarian in Diablo 4 Season 4 covers the best skills for leveling from 1-50, including skills, rotations, and and choices for the Barbarian unique class mechanic, Weapon Techniques.
This guide also covers gearing strategies for leveling, including the best Legendary Aspects to farm from dungeons in both lower-level and higher-level zones. We also direct you to which Gear Affixes and gems are most desirable for the Thorns Barbarian.
Thorns Barbarian Overview in Diablo 4
Thorns Barbarian is an easy and relaxed playstyle where the majority of your damage is passive, allowing you to save up Fury to spend on crushing the elite enemies that cross your path.
Come on! Do it! Hit me, I'm right here!
Thorns for a Barbarian is easy to scale while leveling. We receive Thorns value from Maximum Life, Thorns on gear, and levels which provide a smooth experience all the way to level 50. With Thorns, we can complete dungeons by running past most non-elite enemies without stopping making an overall fast leveling time.
For information about the endgame version of this build, please see our guide:
Thorns Barbarian Endgame Overview
Anticipated PTR Changes to Thorns Barbarian
The biggest change is the viability of as a flat damage aspect with the new weapon damage scaling allowing your weapon upgrades to impact your damage profile better and imprint this aspect less often on your journey to 50. I would still recommend using while leveling to help clear any beefy elites or bosses. All gear will have less affixes but each will have a greater contribution than before. This means any armor you find with Thorns will be a decent upgrade. Weapon damage is still king so you'd probably take any item level upgrade for a weapon you can get early on. Not much has changed for how the build is played early, and more details on the end game systems can be found on the Thorns Barbarian Endgame Guide.
Strengths and Weaknesses for Thorns Barbarian Leveling
Thorns can do much of the heavy lifting of general killing, however, is not sufficient enough on high health enemies or those who attack slowly. We supplement that with a max-level Core Skill to help alleviate that pain.

How to Play Thorns Barbarian
The number one ability you need to use as Thorns Barbarian is . The reason for this is because of . Since we use this ability a ton to keep those stacks up, we end up taking to use as a damage nuke button on elites and bosses. Outside of those interactions, we want to maintain our Shout Skills for the massive buffs they provide but we also use primarily to help with boss killing.
This is a common rotation for the Thorns Barbarian. The goal is to maintain stacks, use at high stacks and keep Shouts up as often as possible.
- Use for Fury Generation and more importantly stacks of .
- For use on higher health enemies or on large groups of enemies. Try to use at high stacks of
- Keep active when fighting to increase Thorns and Damage Reduction.
- Keep active when fighting for Unstoppable, Fortify, and Movement Speed.
- Keep active when fighting for Berserking and increased damage output.
- Primarily for use on multiple elite packs or for bosses,

Leveling Build for Thorns Barbarian
This part of the guide focuses on the core of the build -- those skills you need to take and develop most as you approach level 50. The alternate build listed is the same build path as the Endgame Variant in case you do not want to pay a respec cost, but it will be slower while leveling initially.
Active Skills for Thorns Barbarian
This section includes the six Active skills you'll be using on your Skill Bar, in order of how they appear on the skill tree. Consult the tree for recommendations on which skills should be taken and when.
Flay
(1/5)
Basic
Modifiers:
Flay is the best Basic Skill you can get your hands on as Thorns Barbarian.
Enhanced Flay provides a source of Vulnerable applications which is very useful for scaling damage output, but Combat Flay is the reason we go for Flay at all. This gives us stacking Damage Reduction and Thorns and is really a big reason why Thorns can be viable for leveling.
Upheaval
(5/5)
Core
Modifiers:
Upheaval is a fantastic out-of-the-box Core Skill. This ability has good Area of Effect size and range without needing any Legendary Aspect.
Enhanced Upheaval isn't really a strong affix, however, Furious Upheaval is what we are looking for. is used very often to make sure we maintain those stacks, so while we do that we build up the Furious Upheaval stacks allowing for a large area damage nuke for clearing large packs and killing elites.
Rallying Cry
(1/5)
Defensive
Modifiers:
Rallying Cry is an excellent source of movement speed to avoid damage and get around.
Enhanced Rallying Cry supplies us with our Unstoppable buff, and Strategic Rallying Cry provides a large portion of our Fortify Generation so we can stay Healthy.
Challenging Shout
(5/5)
Defensive
Modifiers:
This skill is mandatory for Thorns Barbarian. The raw Damage Reduction this offers keeps us in the fight.
Enhanced Challenging Shout gives us more Maximum Life and Strategic Challenging Shout works wonders with that by increasing Thorns by a percent of your Life making this ability both a massive defense cooldown and a massive increase in Thorns output.
War Cry
(1/5)
Brawling
Modifiers:
War Cry will increase all damage we do.
Enhanced War Cry is our primary source of Berserking, and Power War Cry just increases the damage increase War Cry offers.
Call of the Ancients
(1/1)
Ultimate
Modifiers:
Call of the Ancients offers a strong standalone damage button that will help immensely for killing dungeon bosses.
Prime Call of the Ancients provides a personal damage buff and Supreme Call of the Ancients gives each Ancient a bonus effect.
Passive Skills for Thorns Barbarian
This covers the Passive Skills you'll want for Thorns Barbarian, in order by how they appear on the tree. Consult the tree for recommendations on which skills should be taken and when.
Tough as Nails
(3/3)
Defensive
Tough as Nails increases Thorns from all sources by a percentage of total Thorns, but also gives a bit of additional Bleeding Damage on top of that. This is a must-have passive!
Outburst
(3/3)
Defensive
Outburst grants us a flat amount of Thorns and more flat Thorns for the amount of bonus Life you have. This works marvelously with , and .
Imposing Presence
(3/3)
Defensive
Having more Maximum Life helps with survivability on top of the extra damage gains mentioned in the section.
Martial vigor
(3/3)
Defensive
Elites are the scariest enemies in the game and often the ones that have a chance at killing you. This will mitigate some of their damage.
Swiftness
(3/3)
Brawling
Moving faster allows you to also complete objectives faster and level more quickly.
Booming Voice
(3/3)
Brawling
A strong passive option for any Barbarian running Shouts. Since much of our damage and defense is based around Shouts, having longer effects from them is a no-brainer.
Raid Leader
(3/3)
Brawling
Raid Leader makes our Shouts even better for survivability and keeping you in the Healthy range.
Guttural Yell
(3/3)
Brawling
This passive is amazing as this will reduce enemy damage before any other Damage Reductions are applied, allowing it to be max effectiveness with no diminishing returns.
Pit Fighter
(3/3)
Weapon Mastery
Some of the hardest-hitting enemies fire at you from range, this reduces all Distant Damage taken and also allows you to bring more pain upon those not fortunate enough to stay away.
Thick Skin
(1/3)
Weapon Mastery
Thorns Barbarian takes hits frequently, meaning even only one point in this passive will see decent value. We still mostly take this for the next passive.
Counteroffensive
(3/3)
Weapon Mastery
Counteroffensive offers us more damage while we have Fortify.
Unconstrained
(1/1)
Key Passives
Unconstrained allows for longer Berserking Duration and stronger effect. When coupled with various Legendary Aspects mentioned later, this will provide the best overall damage boost for a Thorns Barbarian.
Paragon Boards for Thorns Barbarian
Players earn their first Paragon point at level 50. Since this leveling guide covers up through level 50, you'll need to look at our Endgame Paragon guides. For our recommendations for Paragon Boards, including best boards, Glyphs, and paths through Rare nodes, please see the Thorns Barbarian Endgame Paragon guide:
Thorns Barbarian Best Paragon Boards
Best Weapon Technique Choices for Thorns Barbarian
While leveling, it is best to try and level multiple weapons. Even though we do not have as reliable a source of Vulnerability while leveling, Two-Handed Axes should be leveled as soon as possible to make sure that you can benefit from it when transitioning to endgame.
How to Swap Weapons as a Barbarian in Diablo 4
While leveling, Barbarians will likely come across Legendary Aspects that provide a benefit after swapping weapons, such as and . These Aspects require the Barbarian to use damage-dealing abilities assigned to different weapons from their arsenal. This is done through assigning specific weapons to abilities like and through the Skill Assignment pane. Open your character window, navigate to the Abilities tab, and choose Skill Assignment. From there, you'll want to hover over a damage-dealing skill and press the key or button that shows up next to Switch Weapon. The Key Passive also uses the weapon swapping mechanic, and because of the three different bonuses, it requires the use of three active skills that deal damage: one skill assigned to your Two-Handed Bludgeoning Weapon, one assigned to your Two-Handed Slashing Weapon, and one assigned to your Dual-Wield Weapons. It's also important to note that some skills, such as and , will only work with a specific type of weapon. For more information about Weapon Techniques, please see our guide:

Thorns Barbarian Best Leveling Gear for Diablo 4
Although you will depend on random drops for most of your gear, you will have a variety of choices available to you. You can also make informed decisions about whether an apparent upgrade is better for you based on other properties. You may even find yourself in a position of getting a build-defining Legendary Aspect drop -- for a build different from your own. In those cases, it may be worth considering changing builds as you level, since a respec is cheap at this stage.
Best Legendary Aspects from Dungeons
While you can't rely on getting a Legendary Aspect from a drop, you can find Legendaries in other ways. The good news is that there are Legendary Aspects you can acquire early on from dungeons, which are then transcribed into your Codex of Power. Aspects from the first three zones -- Fractured Peaks, Dry Steppes, and Scosglen -- can be farmed very early on.
Best Farmed Legendary Aspects
Penitent Cairns, Scosglen
Yshari Sanctum, Kehjistan
Ancient Reservoir, Hawezar
Heathen's Keep, Hawezar
Halls of the Damned, Kehjistan
Hakan's Refuge, Kehjistan
Ideally, we look for strong synergies with our rotation or Thorns-related Legendary Aspects. All of the options listed above are great farmed options you can use.
Codex of Power Overview
Best Dropped Legendary Aspects
While we shouldn't have to rely on a dropped Aspect for a leveling build, these are some dropped Legendaries that are great for the build. You'll want to keep your eyes out for these.
Bold Chieftain's Aspect and Aspect of Limitless Rage are favorites here when leveling. Bold Chieftain's allows a smoother overall playstyle with lower cooldowns on Shout Skills and it also a must-have for the endgame build. Limitless Rage functions perfectly with how we use since we want to stack up the damage buff before using it.

Thorns Barbarian Best Weapon Choices
Weapons are important to all classes in Diablo 4, since all player damage output keys off weapon damage. Therefore, it's very important to keep your weapon updated by replacing it regularly. Beyond that, Weapons also have Inherent Physical Characteristics native to that weapon type, so there often is a "best" weapon for a particular build.
Imprinting a two-handed weapon with a Legendary Aspect will increase that Legendary's variable power by 100%. Be sure to use Legendaries here that can benefit from it; one that just gives a flat +2 to Skill Ranks isn't going to give +4 when put onto a two-hander. The key here is to look at the variable (the numbers in blue text with a range) to see what the effect will be.
The best weapon choices for both One-Handed Weapons and the Two-Handed Slashing Weapons are axes. The implicit modifier of Damage to Healthy Enemies is really powerful as most enemies will be healthy when they proc your Thorns for the first time, which offers the best damage output increase for Thorns. With that said, however, while leveling the best option is often whatever weapon has the highest Weapon Damage.

Thorns Barbarian Best Leveling Gems
Gems fit into gear sockets and add bonuses depending on whether they are in Armor, Weapons, or Jewelry. Starting at level 20, you'll be able to combine Gems to upgrade them to higher quality and higher bonuses.
Gems come in various qualities from Chipped to Royal. While the gem properties do not change, the traits improve with higher quality. Therefore, while we list only one quality of gem here for listing purposes, you should always socket the highest level gem you can get and equip at your level.
Armor Gems
Unlike the endgame variant, we swap the gem types here. Emeralds just flat-out increase our Thorns damage, which while leveling offer more than Ruby gems would. However, you still will benefit from Ruby gems for survivability and some damage.
Weapon Gems
We use very frequently, so Topaz gems see great value on weapons for the Basic Skill Damage. That being said, Diamonds allow our Ultimate Skill to more easily deal with large elite groups or bosses.
Jewelry Gems
While we recommend Diamonds as a default for Resistance gems, you should always check your Resistances to see if any of them are capped (these will show up in green text). If one or two other Resistances are capped, you may consider replacing one or more of the Diamonds with specific Resistance gems to shore up weaknesses.
