This Wowhead build guide for the Hammer of the Ancients Barbarian in Diablo 4 Season 4 covers the best skills for leveling from 1-50, including skills, rotations, and and choices for the Barbarian unique class mechanic, Weapon Expertise.
This guide also covers gearing strategies for leveling, including the best Legendary Aspects to farm from dungeons in both lower-level and higher-level zones. We also direct you to which Gear Affixes and gems are most desirable for the Hammer of the Ancients Barbarian.
Hammer of the Ancients Barbarian Overview in Diablo 4
Hammer of the Ancients Barbarians are heavy-hitting berserkers capable of quickly clearing through hordes of enemies while delivering devastating damage with . This is a Shout-heavy build, cycling through all three Shouts with the goal of maximum uptime to provide massive boosts to our damage output, mobility, and defensives. The playstyle is as fluid as it is satisfying and fully capitalizes on all that Overpower has to offer.
Hammer of the Ancients is a solid build choice for Barbarian leveling due to offensive proficiency. We shouldn’t run into too many enemies we can’t kill within a few casts of , our survivability is acceptable, and the build faces very few limitations overall. Mobility is one of the most beneficial traits of a leveling build, and our multiple sources of Unstoppable and increased Movement Speed allow us to cover ground quickly while smashing anything that crosses our path. The only real downside to Hammer of the Ancients as a
leveling
build lies in our gear dependence. Those who prefer to wait until mid-game to start imprinting Legendary Aspects may find the Hammer of the Ancients playstyle underwhelming as we rely on , , and a few others to enhance our damage output.

Strengths and Weaknesses for Hammer of the Ancients Barbarian
Hammer of the Ancients Barbarian is one of the strongest builds in Diablo 4 Season 2, largely thanks to the damage bucket reworks and Overpower adjustments. The strengths greatly outweigh the weaknesses here as we are capable of quickly clearing all types of content and even one-shotting challenging enemies. Our main weakness lies in our survivability as we make some defensive sacrifices to achieve our impressive damage output, but calling this a weakness speaks to how powerful this build is as our defensives are still acceptable. While this is a solid build for leveling, it truly shines in endgame content once you start making progress through the Paragon boards.
For information about the endgame version of this build, please see our guide:

How to Play Hammer of the Ancients Barbarian
We open with to generate Fury and build stacks of . We aim for maximum uptime on our Shouts, but this can be hard to achieve before fully gearing. and should be up as much as possible while in combat, with being more of a situational cast (though we want maximum uptime here as well). should be used during big pulls and against Bosses due to the massive impact it has on our damage, but try not to be too conservative with this ability as the cooldown isn’t
too
long.
This is a common rotation for the Hammer of the Ancients Barbarian. The goal is to cast as frequently as possible, with setups that guarantee an Overpower and maximize our damage.
– This is the start of our setup, generating Fury while empowering our next to Overpower.
– This is our main attack, dealing
massive
damage to enemies that can eventually reach the millions (and even billions at endgame).
– We rely on this Skill for Movement Speed, increased Fury Generation, instant Fury Generation, and Unstoppable. Aim for maximum uptime.
– This provides us with Berserking and additional damage. Aim for maximum uptime.
– This is our primary defensive ability. Between the bonus Maximum Life, incoming Damage Reduction, and Fury Generation, you’ll want to use this situationally while aiming for maximum uptime. This cooldown is worth waiting on for big pulls and high-damage Boss phases.
– Our Ultimate provides Unstoppable, Berserking, increased Movement Speed, and additional Fury Generation. This should be used situationally during more challenging encounters.

Bash
(1/5)
Basic
Modifiers:
We choose this Basic Skill for its modifier, providing a guaranteed Overpower for our next . provides excellent Fortify Generation as well.
Hammer of the Ancients
(5/5)
Core
Modifiers:
This is what our build is all about, dealing massive damage to enemies in a single key/button press. gives us a window of increased Fury Generation that works well with , and . The increased damage provided by enables our biggest hits.
Rallying Cry
(1/5)
Defensive
Modifiers:
This Shout provides us with on-demand Fury Generation, Unstoppable, and a significant boost to Movement Speed. It’s always nice to have an additional source of CC prevention/break, and the instant Fury provided by makes this the best available option.
War Cry
(1/5)
Brawling
Modifiers:
grants the Berserking that makes this such a useful ability, while gives us additional damage that outweighs the Fortify provided by the alternative.
Challenging Shout
(1/5)
Defensive
Modifiers:
is a solid modifier that increases our Maximum Life. provides helpful Fury Generation that is most beneficial when we are taking damage from several sources.
Wrath of the Berserker
(1/1)
Ultimate
Modifiers:
This is the best Ultimate for Hammer of the Ancients Barbarians as we are always looking for an additional source of Berserking. We also use frequently, meaning we receive even more benefit from this Ultimate than builds that run it without a Basic Skill. Our rotation lacks room for another damage-dealing ability and the benefit this Ultimate Skill provides outweighs that of .
Passive Skills for Hammer of the Ancients Barbarian
This covers the Passive Skills you'll want for Hammer of the Ancients Barbarian, in order by how they appear on the tree. Consult the tree for recommendations on which skills should be taken and when.
Endless Fury
(3/3)
Defensive
Fury Generation is always helpful to our leveling build as we tend to face the most issues when caught without enough Fury to deliver a fatal . This helps establish fluidity in our rotation and serves as a great Passive.
Imposing Presence
(3/3)
Defensive
This Passive grants additional Maximum Life, increasing our survivability and increasing the effectiveness of our Fortify (which now scales with Maximum Life instead of Base Life).
Swiftness
(3/3)
Brawling
The sooner we get to the next group of enemies, the sooner they die. This helps close gaps between Distant enemies and makes the build feel even more fluid.
Booming Voice
(3/3)
Brawling
This Passive synergizes well with to help us reach our goal of maximum Shout uptime.
Raid Leader
(1/3)
Brawling
This Passive provides moderate healing for Shout-heavy builds and can prove highly beneficial in scenarios where a Potion isn’t an option. We should have at least one Shout active whenever in combat, so this Passive is basically a permanent health regeneration buff. It’s not necessarily strong enough to merit additional points due to the fact that if something is going to kill us, it will usually be instant.
Aggressive Resistance
(3/3)
Brawling
This is a strong defensive Passive as we maintain high Berserking uptime and want all the damage mitigation we can get our hands on.
Prolific Fury
(3/3)
Brawling
This Passive helps minimize downtime by reducing the likelihood of a Fury drought.
Pit Fighter
(3/3)
Weapon Mastery
This well-rounded Barbarian Passives increases our damage done while reducing the damage we take from enemies we haven’t gotten within range of yet, making it a great choice for this leveling build.
Thick Skin
(1/3)
Weapon Mastery
We’re usually taking damage from several enemies at once, especially when herding hordes of demons into position for our next . This Passive helps us maintain Fortify in combat to improve our survivability and Overpower damage.
Counteroffensive
(3/3)
Weapon Mastery
We generate Fortify quickly and maintain it well, making this a strong damage increase.
Heavy Handed
(3/3)
Ultimate
uses our Two-Handed Bludgeoning Weapon and Critical Strike Damage is responsible for half of the joy we receive from Overpower Critical Strikes, making this a strong choice.
Wallop
(3/3)
Ultimate
This Passive capitalizes off the Stun generated by as well as our various sources of Vulnerable application.
Brute Force
(3/3)
Ultimate
A Passive that provides Overpower Damage? We’ll take 3.
Unconstrained
Key Passive
This is the Key Passive of choice for several Barbarian leveling builds as it provides solid benefits without any downsides. We want to maximize our Berserking uptime and obviously want as much additional damage as possible, making this a solid choice for leveling as Hammer of the Ancients. is the best option for endgame content, but the increased Fury cost can make this build feel rather clunky without optimized gear and a proper Paragon setup.
Paragon Boards for Hammer of the Ancients Barbarian
Players earn their first Paragon point at level 50. Since this leveling guide covers up through level 50, you'll need to look at our Endgame Paragon guides. For our recommendations for Paragon Boards, including best boards, Glyphs, and paths through Rare nodes, please see the Hammer of the Ancients Barbarian Endgame Paragon guide:

Best Weapon Expertise Choices for Hammer of the Ancients Barbarian
Leveling is much faster than it was in the past, so do your best to level Weapon Expertise with Two-Handed Axes as early as you can. The best choice here will be Two-Handed Axe Expertise.
Note
: Leveling Two-Handed Axe Expertise will make your journey to Level 50 a smoother experience and is essential for endgame content. This requires using an ability outside our build’s recommended skills and assigning it to use your Two-Handed Axe. We recommend swapping out for to level Two-Handed Axe Expertise, but you can also substitute a different damage-dealing ability for one of your Shouts if you prefer. This shouldn’t take long and will help you fully benefit from the added Vulnerable damage we receive through our Class Mechanic.
How to Swap Weapons as a Barbarian in Diablo 4
While leveling, Barbarians will likely come across Legendary Aspects that provide a benefit after swapping weapons, such as and . These Aspects require the Barbarian to use damage-dealing abilities assigned to different weapons from their arsenal. This is done through assigning specific weapons to abilities like and through the Skill Assignment pane. Open your character window, navigate to the Abilities tab, and choose Skill Assignment. From there, you'll want to hover over a damage-dealing skill and press the key or button that shows up next to Switch Weapon. The Key Passive also uses the weapon swapping mechanic, and because of the three different bonuses, it requires the use of three active skills that deal damage: one skill assigned to your Two-Handed Bludgeoning Weapon, one assigned to your Two-Handed Slashing Weapon, and one assigned to your Dual-Wield Weapons. It's also important to note that some skills, such as and , will only work with a specific type of weapon. For more information about Weapon Techniques, please see our guide:

Hammer of the Ancients Barbarian Best Leveling Gear for Diablo 4
Although you will depend on random drops for most of your gear, you will have a variety of choices available to you. You can also make informed decisions about whether an apparent upgrade is better for you based on other properties. You may even find yourself in a position of getting a build-defining Legendary Aspect drop -- for a build different from your own. In those cases, it may be worth considering changing builds as you level, since a respec is cheap at this stage.
Best Legendary Aspects from Dungeons
While you can't rely on getting a Legendary Aspect from a drop, you can find Legendaries in other ways. The good news is that there are Legendary Aspects you can acquire early on from dungeons, which are then transcribed into your Codex of Power. Aspects from the first three zones -- Fractured Peaks, Dry Steppes, and Scosglen -- can be farmed very early on.
Best Farmed Legendary Aspects
Sunken Ruins, Scosglen
Oldstones, Scosglen
Sirocco Caverns, Kehjistan
Halls of the Damned, Kehjistan
Underroot, Scosglen
Broken Bulwark, Scosglen
Mournfield, Dry Steppes
Maugan’s Works, Hawezar
increases our main Active Skill’s reach and damage and will be used both for leveling and endgame.
is one of the best General Legendary Aspects in the game and is used by just about every Barbarian build.
helps maintain our Fury, meaning more casts.
is one of the strongest defensive Legendary Aspects and helps us avoid getting one-shot by physical damage attacks.
bolsters our main source of damage and synergizes well with in our rotation.
is another permanent part of this build as it works beautifully with and .
provides a strong Bleeding effect and is great for leveling, but the more powerful you get decreases the likelihood of enemies living long enough to justify investing in damage over time.
is fun but a bit clunky: you’ll need to assign your One-Handed Mace to to reap the benefits of this Aspect.
Codex of Power Overview
Best Dropped Legendary Aspects
While we shouldn't have to rely on a dropped Aspect for a leveling build, these are some dropped Legendaries that are great for the build. You'll want to keep your eyes out for these.
is one of our best Legendary Aspect options and is worthy of a Two-Handed Weapon slot for the doubled bonus. A high roll of this Aspect can be somewhat hard to come by, so it’s recommended that you save a maximum roll for endgame gear if you find one while leveling.
is another exceptional Legendary Aspect for our build. Don’t worry too much about how this one rolls, as anything middle-of-the-road or better will have the same effect as a maximum roll when engaged in combat with several enemies.
Occultist Crafting Overview Legendary Aspects Guide Barbarian Legendary Aspects
Hammer of the Ancients Barbarian Best Weapon Choices
Weapons are important to all classes in Diablo 4, since all player damage output keys off weapon damage. Therefore, it's very important to keep your weapon updated by replacing it regularly. Beyond that, Weapons also have Inherent Physical Characteristics native to that weapon type, so there often is a "best" weapon for a particular build.
Imprinting a two-handed weapon with a Legendary Aspect will increase that Legendary's variable power by 100%. Be sure to use Legendaries here that can benefit from it; one that just gives a flat +2 to Skill Ranks isn't going to give +4 when put onto a two-hander. The key here is to look at the variable (the numbers in blue text with a range) to see what the effect will be.
We want to run two One-Handed Maces for the inherent Overpower Damage. Two-Handed Axes are our best Slashing Weapon option as the inherent Damage to Healthy Enemies increases the likelihood that we one-shot our enemies. The Critical Strike Damage provided by Two-Handed Swords is another good option, but Two-Handed Axes should be prioritized when convenient. Two-Handed Maces are the only Two-Handed Bludgeoning Weapons so there’s no room for customization there. Polearms don’t really do anything for us, and One-Handed Swords and One-Handed Axes aren’t as valuable as the Overpower from One-Handed Maces.

Hammer of the Ancients Barbarian Best Leveling Gems
Gems fit into gear sockets and add bonuses depending on whether they are in Armor, Weapons, or Jewelry. Starting at level 20, you'll be able to combine Gems to upgrade them to higher quality and higher bonuses.
Gems come in various qualities from Chipped to Royal. While the gem properties do not change, the traits improve with higher quality. Therefore, while we list only one quality of gem here for listing purposes, you should always socket the highest level gem you can get and equip at your level.
Armor Gems
Maximum Health is the strongest option for improved survivability while leveling.
Weapon Gems
Overpower Damage is massive for Hammer of the Ancients Barbarians and serves as the better choice for Weapon Gems due providing frequent guaranteed Overpowers.
Jewelry Gems
Either of these options is solid as they both provide a slight boost to our survivability. Use whichever you prefer or even is most convenient as most players get by just fine without adding sockets to Jewelry while leveling, and you won't always find Jewelry with Gem Sockets.
