Venture further at your own risk, Mortal. Below, you will find spoilers for the story of Diablo 4, as well as speculation citing resources from the outside book, Diablo: Book of Lorath. If you don't wish to spoil the story for yourself, it is highly advised that you do not continue!
At the conclusion of Diablo 4's story campaign, we're left with a sense of dread and more questions than answers: Donan is gone, Lorath is the last of the Horadrim, and Neyrelle, who bears the Soulstone containing Mephisto, Lord of Hatred and eldest of the Prime Evils, has fled to begin her own journey in an effort to defeat Hatred once and for all.
In the epilogue, we are treated to a brief showing of her journey; from the snowy mountains of Kyovashad to eventually sailing off across what we can assume is the Twin Seas, Neyrelle is shadowed by a familiar Bloody Wolf the whole time - Mephisto, ever present in the Soulstone, haunting her every step.
Diablo 4's Epilogue cutscene.
While this cliffhanger has left players yearning for more information on the story of Diablo 4, it seems that The Book of Lorath contains the continuation of Neyrelle's and Lorath's story through letters between the two - while Lorath pursues her across the known world, Neyrelle leaves behind correspondence to her mentor and friend, and Lorath races against time to find her before Mephisto's corruption can truly take hold.
The Book of Lorath's Purpose
The Book of Lorath begins with a sort of formal type interspersed with handwritten notes in the margins: it appears that this is meant to be a real book that Lorath is carrying around, writing annotations in as he travels. Lorath explains that after the events of Diablo 4, he has briefly taken up residence in Firebreak Manor, Donan's old estate, and begun to write this tome categorizing relics and cursed objects throughout Sanctuary so that the knowledge will not be lost to time.

It is possible that my name will be remembered in infamy and I will be spoken of in whispers reserved for the damned. If that should be the case, I cannot object to it. Had I been more observant, had I been stronger, had I seen the betrayal to come, Donan might still be alive. Instead I sit here in his study, surrounded by his possessions, writing this book.
Lorath reveals that several things had happened since we were informed of the Epilogue: the town of Yelesna had fallen to Hatred from Neyrelle's presence there, the Cathedral of Light has begun hunting down the Horadrim, as evidenced by
Указ Правы
in the Epilogue, and the Horadric Vault has been seized: all of the generations of knowledge the Horadric Order held are now lost to Prava and her fanatics. The last bastion of Horadric knowledge now lies within Lorath's mind, and he writes this tome for Neyrelle above all.
Neyrelle's Letters
In the process of writing, Lorath decided to return home, to that fateful cabin where our story nearly began - and finds a letter from Neyrelle, left there for him in the hopes of his return.
Diablo: Book of Lorath, Neyrelle
Please don't be angry over spilled ale. I know you, and I won't have you turning to old habits. What happened with Elias was not your fault. You know that already. Drink won't make you believe it or forget what happened. Before I left, you hinted that you might be taking a journey of your own. In your typical stubborn way, you remained maddeningly cryptic about it. So I am going to leave letters like this along my way just in case your road brings you to any of the same places. You might have been looking forward to some peace and quiet. Sorry to say you're not going to be rid of me that easily, old man. Wherever you are going, please, be watchful. Be careful. You've managed to make yourself a personal enemy to quite a few demons over the years, not to mention Prava and the Cathedral.
To answer your question, I am well. The burden is heavy, but I am bearing it.
Neyrelle, knowing her mentor, knows he will not stay in one place - she also knows he will likely follow her. As a result, she effectively leaves a trail of breadcrumb letters for Lorath as she journeys, hoping that he will find them. Lorath, seeing this letter, now journeys for two reasons - the writing of the Book, and finding Neyrelle herself.
Neyrelle and Lorath's Journeys
As he follows, Lorath discovers Neyrelle's path and presence along his journey. What we know of Neyrelle's travel is less than of Lorath's, but we do know this: Lorath is on her heels virtually the entire time, in some cases as close as only a few days behind her.
Traveling from the Fractured Peaks to Hawezar and then on to Caldeum, Lorath collects various precious artifacts as he goes - the

, a leaf from the sacred Druid tree
Glor-an-Fhaida
,
Radament's Hourglass
, a

, and
Meshif's Opium Pipe
. Heading finally to Kurast, Lorath finds the first evidence of Neyrelle's path: much like during the events of Diablo 2, Hatred has once again made its way through the port.

Kurast is not the safest of ports. It hasn't fully recovered from the devastation caused by Mephisto's ascendance, but it has achieved stability. Yet when I arrived, I found it in chaos. Violence had erupted like a plague. Old rivalries have been renewed. Neighbors slaughter neighbors over trivial slights. Hatred reins.
Lorath receives another letter here, from the very ship captain that we see ferrying Neyrelle in the Epilogue: she did in fact cross the Twin Seas, and Lorath is right behind her.
Diablo: Book of Lorath, Neyrelle
Before coming here, I thought I was learning to ignore his voice and see through his visions. But I should have anticipated this. I was a fool. No doubt you would have tried to warn me if you were here. Perhaps I would have listened.
I am leaving Kurast as quickly as I can, and I will not repeat this mistake. I must seek some way of silencing the Lord of Hatred. I must find a way to keep my sanity. But don’t worry, old man. I am not lost yet.
Things are significantly bleaker this time, as Neyrelle is clearly falling prey to Mephisto's influence. The Prime Evil may have been weakened when he was captured, but still remains a terrifying force of evil. The citizens of Kurast certainly feel his influence - after all, Lorath can plainly see Hatred blossoming - and this is our first clue that Neyrelle is not entirely a reliable narrator. While she feels that she is still relatively in control, her surroundings show otherwise: whether she wants to be or not, carrying the Soulstone has made her an unwilling conduit of Hatred.
Neyrelle and Lorath's journeys. Neyrelle is symbolized by the Soulstone icon, while Lorath is symbolized by the Horadric Seal.
Lorath continues on, traveling through Lut Gholein, New Tristram, and eventually back to his old home in Westmarch. After conducting a ritual to smith the protection of the elements into his father's old shield in order to infuse its protection into the Book, Lorath continues north, noting that Neyrelle's presence was not in Westmarch at all - a key sign that she never traveled far enough west to enter the city.
A long journey through the Dreadlands and into Ivgorod brings Lorath to where he believes Neyrelle to be: the Floating Sky Monastery within the Tamoe Mountains. Sadly, while correct, Neyrelle is already gone - having seen a vision of Lorath crossing the Dreadlands, and fleeing ahead of him. Lorath is met with only a letter, and a gaggle of terrified monks to greet him.
Diablo: Book of Lorath, Neyrelle
I’ve learned as much as I can from the monks here, and I think their techniques are helping me to ignore the voices and the visions. I am doing much better than I was.
Once again, Neyrelle is positive in her letters, but is clearly showing the worse for wear: while she claims the visions and voices are lessening, not only did she receive a vision showing Lorath's arrival, but also was so visibly tainted by Hatred that the monks of the monastery almost refused to help her:
Diablo: Book of Lorath, Lorath Nahr
She was here. Only days ago. One of the masters spent time with her. His voice trembled with fear as he spoke. And he was one of the few who would go near her to teach her. He said she is an agent of pure chaos and hatred, even though she clearly doesn’t want to be. The monks never even let her into the monastery. They made her sleep in a guest hut far outside the walls. I don’t blame them. I fear I am losing her.
or perhaps she is already lost
With this final letter, Neyrelle's trail is lost - and Lorath is at a loss. Traveling finally to the island of Xiansai, this is where the Book of Lorath leaves us - with some questions answered, but more raised.
Lorath's Next Steps
Should Lorath go searching for Neyrelle or finish his book first? Both are crucial - one for the preservation of knowledge, and one for the preservation of a student and friend Lorath holds dear. After an internal battle, Lorath decides - he will complete the Book, and then continue his search for Neyrelle, even if it is the last thing he does. He hopes the book is specifically for her, after all - above all others, he writes this tome in the hopes that she will read it.
Diablo: Book of Lorath, Lorath Nahr
As soon as I am done with this island, I am coming to you.. No matter where you are, I will find you, and I will help you. If that is the last thing I do, my head will go to the Tree of Whispers wearing a smile.
The Book of Lorath fills in some crucial information, however still leaves us with a cliffhanger. While we can see that Neyrelle is clearly deteriorating quickly (one could speculate much quicker than normal, considering the time it took prior Soulstone bearers to become corrupted by the Prime Evils' influence), Lorath seems determined to save her, and perhaps naively optimistic about her fate. We don't know the stretch of time that the journeys of Lorath and Neyrelle unfold over, only the general locations they were in - meaning that this story could pick up days, weeks, months, or even years after the events of the Cathedral of Hatred and the Epilogue of Diablo 4. As of now, however, there are a few things we know for certain: the influence of Mephisto is terrifyingly strong, the Book of Lorath may well provide some form of protection to Neyrelle if she is reached in time, and Lorath himself is committed to finding new ways to defeat the Prime Evils once and for all.
There's so much more about Lorath and Neyrelle's story that we don't yet know - what are your theories on their eventual fates? Do you think Neyrelle will fall to Mephisto's corrupting influence? Will Lorath be able to help her in any way, or is the time of the Horadrim truly over? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
