In a recent blog post
, Blizzard shared an update on the development of their upcoming remake, Diablo II: Resurrected. Based on player feedback from the first Alpha phase back in April, Team 3 introduces several new quality of life features as well as major updates to in-game assets and art.
Quality of Life Improvements
Most importantly, the development team tackles two of the most discussed quality of life features in the history of Diablo 2. First is a new interface option called
Item Label Display
will enable
permanent display of item names
.
Thanks to this option, decades of holding a singular button to show loot on the ground while fighting your way through Sanctuary for hours will be a thing of the past! Back in the day, item pickup and display has been a delicate topic from a tech standpoint - but those days are gone, and both old and new players should look forward to choosing their own fate when it comes to displaying their precious items.
Another new feature that Blizzard expands upon is the
Shared Stash
. Being one of the most requested QoL features, Team 3 chose a very conservative approach and added only one shared stash tab for an entire account at first. However, feedback after April's Alpha phase has been "loud and clear",
and the total number of shared stash tabs has been increased to 3
. As a result, players will be able to stash away much more items over the course of a playthrough, adding more motivation to start out new characters due to the availability of powerful leveling or end-game gear.
Art Changes
Besides quality of life and gameplay features, Diablo 2's art defines an additional layer that showcases the unique experience of Blizzard's iconic ARPG.
The majority of Alpha players agreed that some of the visual spell effects present in Resurrected lacked meaningful visualization, especially compared to the original. Examples of lackluster animations have been the Sorceress' Ice and Lightning spells. Acknowledging this feedback, Blizzard's blog post shows a revision of the Blizzard spell that looks a lot more like the iconic Ice spell of the past:
In addition to subpar spell visuals and animations, some art and asset makeovers present in Resurrected's Alpha Testing didn't do enough justice according to player feedback. The blog post mentions gem and potion assets as two examples and shows reworked versions of them:
As one can see, all original Diablo 2 assets are of great quality on their own. The first round of Ressurected's assets added tons of polygons and many lighting details. However, details often get lost, especially when it comes to smaller assets and icons. As a result, the reworked assets look a lot cleaner in their level of detail while staying true to the original.
Other Changes: In-Game Clock, Audio Adjustments, Map Options
Apart from the major quality of life and art improvements, many smaller adjustments have also been made. For example, improved readability of the map overlay has been a major issue in the original game and will be further addressed through new assets and better coloring. Another issue that came up during the Alpha revolved around loading screens and character vulnerability. From now on, players shouldn't spawn in "hostile places" until they've left the loading screen. The solution to this issue will also bring improved overall load times.
At the end of the blog post, Blizzard talks about the upcoming Open Beta test in August where players will be able to test multiplayer and console gameplay. Unfortunately, the post doesn't mention a particular release date for the announced test phase yet.
