Notes

Strength

188

Strength determines what type of gear your Barbarian can wear, as well as how much melee damage you do. The melee damage isn't too important for this type of build, so really just focus on getting enough Strength to equip the best gear possible. One of your BiS items, Breath of the Dying, can be placed in a Giant Thresher 2-hander, which requires a minimum strength of 188. If you plan to go one-handed, the Berserker Axe requires only 138. Invest up to 100 points early to make sure you aren't locked out of leveling gear.

Dexterity

140

Again, the only reason you need Dexterity is to equip gear, and much of the gear you will equip as a Barbarian will not require much here. Invest 70-80 points early; build to 140 if you plan to use a Giant Thresher 2-handed base for Breath of the Dying.

Vitality

Max

All points you don't put into Strength and Dexterity, put here. You'll need it for life, stamina, and stamina recovery.

Energy

None

While you do use some Mana, ignore this stat. You'll make up for it later with Mana Steal items.

Find Potion
20 points

Prerequisite for Grim Ward. Max in order to get full physical damage bonus from Grim Ward and break physical immunities.

Shout
16 points

Shout improves the defense rating of your entire party. It is useful early on, and even more useful for its synergy: 5 seconds of duration to Battle Orders and Battle Command for every level of Shout. Max this one late.

Battle Orders
20 points

Battle Orders increases the maximum mana, life, and stamina of your entire party, and also offers +5 seconds' duration to Battle Orders and Shout.

Grim Ward
1 point

Only one point is necessary, even though this will be a main skill. Additional points only increases the radius and slow %, so it's better to put these points in Find Potion for the damage bonus.

Battle Command
1 point

Battle Command is a really powerful skill, giving you +1 All Skills for the skill's duration. You'll be popping Battle Command and then going right into a Whirlwind as your main skill rotation.

Axe Mastery
20 points

Axe Mastery is just one possible Weapon Skill you can choose to invest in, although it's best to pick one and stay there. Axes are highly available, and most of the good Runewords can be made into Axes. The only desirable weapon this limits you from using is Lawbringer for Decrepify (deals with Physical Immunes), since it cannot be made into Axes, but this will mostly affect your choice of Mercenary.

Increased Stamina
1 point

At level 1, Increased Stamina gives you a 30% bump to your Stamina. This starts a series of one-point wonders that can improve with the addition of +Skill items.

Iron Skin
1 point

At level 1, Iron Skin gives you a 30% bump to your Defense.

Increased Speed
1 point

At level 1, Increased Speed gives you a 13% Faster Walk/Run.

Natural Resistance
1 point

At level 1, Natural Resistance gives 12% to All Resistances -- Cold, Lightning, Fire, and Poison.

Whirlwind
20 points

After investing so many points into the prerequisites to unlock Whirlwind, you can finally unlock this build's primary skill. Because this skill is so important to this build, you will obviously want to max it out first.

Berserk
1 point

Berserk is primarily picked up for the situation where you are fighting physical immune enemies or dealing single target damage. Only 1 point is needed. This gets a nice synergy from Shout, adding 10% extra Magic Damage per level of Shout.

Skill Rotation for Whirlwind Barb in Diablo II: Resurrected Ladder Season 14

Buff with Battle Command, Battle Orders and Shout. Since Battle Command raises your skill level by 1, you should start with this skill.

Find your enemies.

Whirlwind a swath of devastation among them!

Cast Grim Ward once you get a corpse.

Repeat step 3.

Leveling as a Whirlwind Barb in Diablo II: Resurrected Ladder Season 14Best Mercenary for Whirlwind Barb in Diablo II: Resurrected Ladder Season 14

Weapon - Lawbringer has a 20% chance of delivering a level 15 Decrepify on striking, which is an amazing boon to the Whirlwind Barbarian, given his dependency on delivering Physical damage. This can be used as an offhand weapon for the Mercenary, since such effects work fine on the offhand (many single-target abilities such as Crushing Blow do not work on the main hand of Act V Mercenaries), leaving the main hand available for the biggest damage-dealing sword you can find. Find the hardest-hitting weapon you can find for the main hand -- great choices include Kingslayer, Grief, Last Wish, and Breath of the Dying.

Helm - Andariel's Visage, Vampire Gaze, or Tal Rasha's Horadric Crest are all good options. Each of these offer some form of Leech, which is really important for keeping the Mercenary alive.

Armor - The Fortitude Runeword is recommended, offering Resistances, Enhanced Damage, Defense, and Life. You need your Mercenary to stay alive, so they can keep up the valuable Auras. An alternative to the Fortitude Runeword is Duriel's Shell, which isn't quite as good but does give the Mercenary everything we're looking for.

Small Charms - Typically for Small Charms, a Whirlwind Barb should look for All Resistance Charms, to combat the Resistances needed for Hell Difficulty. Picking up extra Resistances from Charms will make gearing much easier to deal with. The unique charm Annihilus is the best Small Charm available, granting +Skills, +All Attributes, +All Resistances, and 5-10% extra experience. This charm only drops off Uber Diablo.

Large Charms - The same traits you will look for in Small Charms will also be available in Large Charms. Small Charms tend to scale better, so look for Small Charms to replace Large down the road. The unique Large Charm Hellfire Torch grants +Skills, + Attributes, and +All Resistances. This charm drops from the Pandemonium event.

Grand Charms - For Grand Charms, you want anything with +Combat Skills. This is a powerful Grand Charm for a Whirlwind Barb, giving a boost to Whirlwind. The unique Grand Charm is Gheed's Fortune, giving big boots to Magic Find and Gold Find, and reduces vendor prices by 15%.

Am I missing something with Gore Riders? The screen shot posted here and the pair I got do not have an enhanced damage mod.

BotD does not proc during WW, so I do not know why that is the recommended weapon to use for this build.

Rhyme (Shael and Eth in a two-socket shield) is an often-overlooked choice for a shield 🛡️.

Rhyme offers respectable increased chance to block and faster listed blocking speed than other shields, including Stormshield. Break points are important to actually blocking faster, but block speed for a barbarian is pretty fast to start with. Rhyme has good resists, cannot be frozen, and regenerate mana. It also helps a bit with MF and GF. What's not to like on this baby?

Rhyme lacks Stormshield's impressive 35% (physical) damage reduced. This is easily made up with a few points in Battle Cry and some crowd control (Howl and Taunt, and maybe Grim Ward) when the monsters are heavy hitters.

Rhyme's regenerate mana can combine with a perfect skull in Arreat's Face and Manald Heal ring to yield 15+19+20=54% faster regenerate mana. If you're carrying some hefty mana or life and mana charms, and using high level Battle Orders, you'll seldom run out of mana, even when fighting groups of mana-stealing monsters.

My own barbarian used the low-requirements tower shield for his first Rhyme because it had the highest base blocking chance. Not too long ago, my barb upgraded to the elite version aegis shield for prestige, but, honestly, there was little real improvement over the tower shield! He still has the tower shield Rhyme in his stash for sentimental reasons.

Rhyme is easy to get, saves finding cannot be frozen on other items or using a cham rune, and will do the job very well all the way through the game. If you're opting to use a shield, try it!
