Notes

Strength

148 minimum

You can put more Strength here if you want, but 148 will give you a full range of choices for Paladin Shield base items. The top-level Vortex Shield has the highest STR requirement. You'll be using Paladin bases for both shields you'll carry eventually.

Dexterity

136

You will need 136 Dexterity to equip Phase Blades, you preferred base item for your chosen BiS weapon.

Vitality

Max

Put all your remaining points here. You can also choose to add more to Strength to give your Zeal a little more bite.

Energy

None

This is not a mana-demanding build, so you don't need any points invested here.

Description

Prayer
1 point

Prerequisite for Cleansing.

Resist Fire
20 points

Resist Fire is your most important damage synergy for Holy Fire; you'll get a whopping 18% extra Fire Damage per level of Resist Fire. Max this out before maxing out Salvation. Another nice gift is that every 2 points of Resist Fire gives you 1 point added to your maximum Fire Resistance. 20 points will thus give you an extra 10 points here, and it's passive, meaning you don't have to be running the aura for it to work.

Cleansing
1 point

Cleansing shortens the duration of Poisons and Curses. You'll only be putting one point here, but that's all you'll need, particularly since this build includes many +Skill items. Even 1 point shortens the durations by 39%, which is usually enough to keep you from having to make an emergency trip back to town.

Salvation
20 points

Although Salvation is a more useful aura on its own than Resist Fire, max out Resist Fire before investing a lot of points here. Get 1 point as soon as you can, but put the rest into Resist Fire. The main reason you have Salvation is its damage synergy with Holy Fire; every level of Salvation adds 6% fire damage. That's 1/3 of what you get with Resist Fire, so only put this in after maxxing out everything else.

Fanaticism

Fanaticism is your primary aura you will run to power up your Zeal attacks. You will only switch off this if you need to hit Cleansing to rid yourself of curses/poisons, or if you need the extra Resist Fire or Salvation for a specific fight.

Description

Sacrifice
20 points

Sacrifice performs two functions. First, it's a prerequisite to Zeal. Second, it's the damage synergy for Zeal, adding 12% damage per level of Sacrifice. You'll want to max out this skill for this reason alone; you won't actually use it.

Smite
1 point

Prerequisite for Holy Shield.

Holy Bolt
1 point

Prerequisite for Holy Shield.

Zeal
20 points

Zeal is your primary attack mode, so you should concentrate on getting this maxed early. Its main synergy is Sacrifice (12% damage per level), so this should also be a priority.

Charge
1 point

Prerequisite for Holy Shield. It's also worth putting on your bar for the burst of movement speed.

Blessed Hammer
1 point

Prerequisite for Holy Shield.

Holy Shield
1 point

Holy Shield is a "one point wonder" ability -- even 1 point dramatically increases your defense (+25%) and block percentage (14%). With the +Skill items in this build, this will go higher.

Leveling as a Dragon Paladin in Diablo II: Resurrected Ladder Season 14Best Mercenary for Dragon Paladin in Diablo II: Resurrected Ladder Season 14

Weapon - Infinity is mandatory for this build; you must have a Infinity on your mercenary (or run with another Paladin with a high-level Conviction aura) to have any chance of success in Hell levels.

Helm - All the usual recommendations apply here, such as Guillaume's Face or Andariel's Visage. If you go with Andi's, you should get a socket here and use a Jewel with the Ruby prefix (does not necessarily correspond to color) with as close to a 30% Fire Resistance as you can get. This will counteract Andi's main drawback: -30 Fire Resistance, which will prove fatal with many encounters and particularly in Ubers.

Armor - Fortitude is the best choice for high survivability in your Mercenary. Survivability is key, as you need his Con

Small Charms - Dragon Paladin should look for Charms that give All Resistances, Attack Rating, Min/Max Damage, and Life. Fire Damage is nice too if you can get a high one with other desirable traits. Picking up extra Resistances from Charms will make the higher difficulty levels easier to deal with. The unique charm Annihilus is the best Small Charm available, granting +Skills, +All Attributes, +All Resistances, and 5-10% extra experience. This charm only drops off Uber Diablo.

Large Charms - The same traits you will look for in Small Charms will also be available in Large Charms. Small Charms tend to scale better, so look for Small Charms to replace Large down the road. The unique Large Charm Hellfire Torch grants +Skills, + Attributes, and +All Resistances. This charm drops from the Pandemonium event.

Grand Charms - For Grand Charms, you'll want anything with +Combat Skills class skills, which is where most of your skills lie. You can also pick up one or two for Defensive Auras, but Offensive Auras is probably not worth the inventory space. The unique Grand Charm is Gheed's Fortune, giving big boots to Magic Find and Gold Find, and reduces vendor prices by 15%.

The links to the various auradin flavors at the top of the article are broken.

In the guide it mentions -you'll have a whopping level 44 Holy Fire aura. However, the scaling of Holy Fire is such that the difference between a level 30 Holy Fire aura and a level 44 Holy Fire aura, while significant, may not be a better deal than what Phoenix has to offer.

People misunderstand how the Aura's work. 2 Dragon + HoJ = 110 level Holy fire aura.

It's not a difference between level 30 and level 44 Holy fire. For each item equipped you get an Aura. So 2 Dragon Runewords will provide 2 Separate level 28 Holy Fire Aura's.

When you add in a HoJ + 2 Dragon Runewords. You now have 3 Separate level 44 Holy fire Aura's all hitting at once because you have 3 items. This damage is over 6k pulse damage alone and equal too a 110 level Holy fire Aura.

When comparing HoJ +2 Dragon vs Dream set up. The Holy fire Aura is the clear winner because it's 3 Separate level 44 Aura's vs 2 Separate Holy Shock Aura's.

So just remember it isn't just a level 44 Aura it's actually 3 of them. So flickering flame isn't the best option because a helm with fire facets is increasing the 3 Separate level 44 Holy Fire Aura's damage. So you can look at a 5% damage fire facet as really 15% damage since it is in fact affecting 3 Aura's not 1.

It's a hidden mechanic often missed but it is how it works and should be considered when making builds. I prefer a True Auradin so use the HoJ+ 2 Dragon for 110 level Holy Fire Aura then I also pump up a 2nd Aura typically Holy Shock. (A HoJ in a Scepter with +3 Holy Shock) So this way you have 4 Aura's hitting your enemies and with a Conviction Merc this pulse damage is 8k+. I also prefer the Holy Freeze Merc cause everything is slowed as the screen explodes. You just rock every Aura and everything dies before it hits you.
