After the events of the
Shadowlands epilogue
and judgment of Sylvanas Windrunner, Genn Greymane and Anduin Wrynn reunite.
Story Spoilers Ahead.
Greymane: I can't tell you how relieved I am to see you safe, my king. Even after reading Jaina's reports, I can scarcely imagine the horrors you endured.
Anduin: There were times I thought I would never escape the Jailer's control. The things he made me do...
Greymane: Those actions were not your fault! You cannot blame yourself.
Anduin: I... I should have been stronger...
Greymane: Anduin Wrynn, you are the strongest man I know. And when you return to Stormwind, the whole kingdom will tell you the same.
Anduin: I can't go back, Genn. Not yet.
Greymane: But the people need--
Anduin: Turalyon will keep the Alliance safe in my absence. And I know you'll watch over everyone we care about... Old Wolf.
Greymane: Of course. Take whatever time you need. And when you're ready... please, come home.
Turalyon Leading the Alliance
Leading up to the events of Shadowlands
, Anduin was abducted by Sylvanas' valkyr in front of Genn Greymane, who viewed Anduin as a son. Now, as the two leaders reunite, we learn that Anduin does not want to return to his old leadership position quite yet, content to have Turalyon remain
in charge of the Alliance forces
. Turalyon's approach towards leadership is less pacifist than Anduin's, so it will be interesting to see if old conflicts reopen under his rule.
We'd also like to highlight one of the Il'gynoth whispers, which hints at turbulent times ahead now that Turalyon, the golden one, has claimed the empty Alliance throne.
The golden one claims a vacant throne. The crown of light will bring only darkness.
Anduin Remaining in Shadowlands
We last saw Anduin in the
cinematic following his encounter
in Sepulcher of the First Ones, where he broke free of the Jailer's influence but didn't really cover his emotional state following the encounter. In this brief dialogue, we see that Anduin is still processing trauma from his ordeal, wracked with guilt that he did not resist the Jailer.
While he does not give a reason why he wants to remain behind in the Shadowlands, he could very likely feel overwhelmed or unfit to rule due to his guilt. Or perhaps Anduin wants to remain behind in the hopes of finding either of his parents and getting some closure, as he's been orphaned at a young age and visions of his father have given him guidance at crucial moments.
Possible Hints in Sylvanas
World of Warcraft: Sylvanas
Spoilers Ahead.
In the Epilogue of
World of Warcraft: Sylvanas
by Christie Golden, it's implied someone joins her in the Maw. Sylvanas hears the clank of metal armor, and remembers Anduin's words. It's possible Anduin has chosen to spend at least some of his time in the Shadowlands helping Sylvanas with her task.
She squared her shoulders.
No matter how long it takes
, she had said to Tyrande.
Let it begin now
.
But before Sylvanas could again stride forward into the vastness of the Maw, she heard a sound. One familiar--and utterly unexpected.
The distinctive
clank
of metal armor.
Hope
, Anduin had told her,
is what you have when all other things have failed you. Where there is hope, you make room for healing, for all things that are possible... and some that are not.
Sylvanas Windrunner felt hope rise within her, and for the first time in so very long, she invited it in.
The "distinctive clank of metal armor" in particular suggests Anduin, and this sound has been associated with him before. The following passage is from
Sylvanas
' Prologue:
Anduin cocked his head and looked at her searchingly.
As if mocking her he sat, somehow graceful, if clanking, in his armor. He reached for the water, toasted her, and drank.
"Go on then, Sylvanas Windrunner. Tell me these truths you have never shared. It would seem I have nothing but time."
If Anduin has chosen to help Sylvanas with her task, it could be because he knows first-hand what it is to be tormented in the Maw, and wishes to see others rescued from that terrible place. Or perhaps he simply wants to spend some time with Sylvanas, offering her the hope she needs in what might seem like an inescapable fate.
