What's New With Survival Hunter in Mists of Pandaria Classic

In Mists of Pandaria, Survival Hunters keep their priority-based playstyle, and none of our main abilities change in a big way. With the right Talents, you can play almost exactly as before. The core rotation still balances generating Focus and then spending it. You still play around
Sichern und Laden
with
Explosivschuss
as your primary damage dealer. Our Mastery is also unchanged with
Meisterschaft: Essenz der Viper
.
Survival Hunter DPS Overview
However, Hunters as a class do get a few big updates. We no longer carry a melee “stat stick,” and ranged weapons now sit in the Main-Hand slot, so they give more primary and secondary stats. Expertise is also now useful for Hunters in Mists of Pandaria Classic. Because our shots can be dodged, we now need 7.5% Hit
and
7.5% Expertise to be fully capped. The good news is that our shots can no longer be blocked!
Spell Changes
Almost none of the core Survival spells change. The biggest tweak is that
Sprengfalle
no longer shares a cooldown with
Schwarzer Pfeil
, but it also does not proc
Sichern und Laden
, so use it only for real AoE.
Aspect of the Fox has been removed, and
Kobraschuss
among others can now be cast while moving. Remember to add a /stopcasting macro so you do not break shields on fights like Spirit Kings.
Explosivschuss
and
Arkaner Schuss
now put Hunter’s Mark on the target when you use them, so you do not spend a GCD on it. With more than one Hunter in the group, it can still fall off on extra targets, making it a bit harder to keep up with multiple targets at the same time.
Hunters finally get a real interrupt with
Gegenschuss
, so make room for it on your bar!
At level 87, we also learn
Stampede
, a five-minute cooldown that calls pets from your stable for a short burst of damage.
Talent Changes
Many Survival talents are now baseline passives you learn while leveling or as soon as you pick the Specialization. These include
Fallenbeherrschung
,
Einfangen
,
Verbessertes Schlangengift
,
Sichern und Laden
, and
Schlangenfächer
. The core shots
Explosivschuss
and
Schwarzer Pfeil
stay the same. We also gain
Viperngift
, a new passive that adds extra Focus.
Glyphs change a lot. They no longer boost damage; most help you survive or aid the group.
Glyphe 'Geistbande'
is almost required in PvE. Glyph of Kill Shot is built into the spell, so you can fire Kill Shot twice if the target lives.
Old talents like
Impromptu
,
Jagdfieber
, and
Eifer
are still Talent options, and new talents add more ways to play.
Die Vögel
lines up well with other burst cooldowns, while
Blinzelstöße
and
Luchsansturm
change how your pet works.
Aspekt des eisernen Falken
is an easy pick because it cuts all damage you take by 10%, and
Freudentaumel
is an active heal. This means that the Level 45 Talent tier is crucial for survivability. This is great because Hunters have historically lacked just that for a long time.
The level-90 tier adds some fresh new spells where we otherwise get almost nothing.
Glevenwurf
is best most of the time.
Überspannen
and
Sperrfeuer
both have uses, and
Sperrfeuer
is great for heavy AoE.
Rotation Changes
The core of Survival stays the same. Keep
Explosivschuss
on cooldown; it now costs only 25 Focus. You also still want to keep
Schwarzer Pfeil
up so
Sichern und Laden
can proc.
Spend Focus with
Arkaner Schuss
and build it with
Kobraschuss
as before.
Most rotation changes come from talents.
Eifer
makes the opener smooth, and
Glevenwurf
adds a new shot you press every so often.
While we do still use a priority based cooldown, and a lot of the abilities keep the same priority, it's still important to note that because the Focus cost on a lot of these abilities have been adjusted and
Kobraschuss
now generates 14 Focus instead of 9, the rotation can feel very different to play.
In general, Survival in Mists of Pandaria feels like a fresh breeze, it's not complicated to play, and it allows you to do the small jobs in boss fights that other classes might struggle with easily, while still maintaining your full DPS.
Pet Changes
Pets get a big rework. Any pet can use any Specialization, so you can keep the look you like without losing damage. Specific Pets also bring almost every raid utility you could need, for example:
Wolf
gives a Critical Chance buff with
Wutgeheul
.
Katze
gives a Mastery buff with
Brüllen des Mutes
.
Eber
puts
Rüstungsschwächung
on the target through
Gebrechlichkeit
.
