What DPS Should You Play in Mythic Ny'alotha?

Patch 8.3 will contain a new raid, Ny’alotha, the Waking City, and with a new raid comes new raid balance. More often than not class vs class raid balance will impact very few people. Generally for DPS in raid it would be in your best interest to master one class / spec while learning the fundamentals of the game, and then once you have learned the game to a level that is appropriate for maintaining alts / class swapping then you should do it.

Introduction
The point of this article is to attempt to rank specs coming into Ny’alotha. There historically has been class tuning after heroic week going into mythic week in order to keep classes within a few percent of one another, so some things may change. I’m going to justify the placement of the specs beneath the tier sheet, and also know that being good at fights such as Carapace of N’zoth and N’zoth will be higher value higher than being good at fights like Wrathion, Maut, or Skitra. Things such as utility will also be taken into account when ranking these, and if you are looking for justification make sure to check below. As always though, anything can be played if you spend enough time, but this tier list is set to be useful if you are on the fence about 2 classes. Also know that some specs that are the absolute best at one niche that is present in Ny'alotha will be ranked higher than they would be if it was Eternal Palace (example is Arms Warrior).
As more of a meta concept though, there will probably be an even melee to ranged split not favoring one over the other too heavily due to the latter fights not punishing melee too hard overall. Of course this can always change, but this is how it seems to be based on raid testing. If you are playing 14 DPS then it will be about 7 ranged and 7 melee is what I highly suspect at this point.
Types of Encounters in Ny'alotha
Single Target
Xanesh
I would put in this category because the fight is largely single target. On Mythic one of the mechanics is an add that spawns that you need to kill ASAP, but that is a Mythic only mechanic. Xanesh favors high sustained and high burst single target.
Shad'har
is a largely single target encounter with a little bit of movement. Shad'har favors high sustained and high burst single target.
One main target with a few off targets
Maut
has the main boss and an add that spawns that you are attempting to kill ASAP. The boss and the add will be spread 20 yards at all times. This fight favors ranged multi-dotters and high burst damage.
Prophet Skitra
has the primary boss + a debuff that spawns adds on players. The adds are deadly and need to be killed ASAP, but they can be cleaved at the same time as the boss. This fight favors classes that do insane stacked 2 2 target cleave.
Ra-den
excels for classes that can do spread 2 target cleave in order to kill the orbs or can do stacked 2 - 3 target cleave while not losing single target on a primary target.
Single Target with Multi-Target intermission
Wrathion
has these spread out pillars that need to be killed during the intermission phase, but the fight is largely single target, but you will need some classes (mostly AOE classes) to help clean up your intermission.
Vexiona
has one main boss, but there are decent amount of adds that spawn as well that need to be killed quickly. This is pretty melee / AOE favorable as an encounter.
Il'gynoth
is an encounter that seems like it is AOE due to the amount of adds, when in reality it requires add control and heavy burst single target. This fight favors classes that can convert low damage DOTs into high damage single target or classes that just innately have insane burst single target.
Spread Multi-Target
Drest'agath
is a spread out multi-target encounter that favors multi-dotters heavily. Think about it like G'huun Phase 1.
"Is this a raid boss or a dungeon?"
HIvemind
has a ton of adds that have to be killed in addition to two boss targets. This fight favors having a large amount of consistent AOE, but you need to balance some classes to have a bit of boss damage as well.
Carapace of N'zoth
Carapace requires a balance of good single target and efficient AOE. This is where classes like Fire Mage and Havoc DH excel as they lose little to no damage to cleave all the adds. Overall, having a good balance of efficient cleave and high single target is very important for Carapace of N'zoth. It's cool if you can kill all the adds instantly, but they are never the absolute top priority. There is also some use case for Purification Protocol Major on this fight as well, so classes that are slightly flexible with their essence choice will also be good here.
N'zoth
Phase 1
Psychus phase is efficient 2 target cleave where you are moving a mini boss tentacle to tentacle and cleaving both down simultaneously.
Phase 2
is a multi-dot, but this multi-dot is the least important part of the encounter overall. It's just a bunch of tentacles all at once.
Last Phase
is also 2 target cleave which is the most important part.
Efficient 2 target cleave / high single target is likely the most important element to have on this fight. Having some multi-dotters does not hurt though, but melee will generally be pretty strong on N'zoth.
Tier List
Justification
Death Knight
Frost is excellent on multi-target cleave fights where there will typically be one priority target and many smaller health targets that are within melee. They can line up a pretty significant amount of burst with
Sindragosas Hauch
comboed with
Blood of the Enemy
. Frost Death Knight seems as if it will be one one of the strongest melee DPS due to fights such as Carapace of N’zoth and Ra-den because of the availability of one high health priority target + smaller health mobs that can be cleaved by the Frost Death Knight. Basically there are a lot of fights that have good damage patterns for Frost DK.
Unholy is a bit of a different story. Unholy lags behind Frost in the cleave department, but Unholy definitely is better for burst single target because of
Armee der Toten
. It could potentially be good for fights such as Maut if it has a pretty intense damage check with its
Obsidianhaut
, but Unholy is also melee so??? Unfortunately for Unholy, that is the only damage profile in which it excels over Frost.
Demon Hunter
Havoc Demon Hunter has it all. Good single target, insane AOE, good two target cleave, the best defensively, stupid amounts of healing, good burst damage,
Chaosbrandmal
,
Dunkelheit
, mobility, etc. Honestly, Havoc does just an unreal amount damage to the point where I think I’d expect 2 or 3 per raid to be preferred especially with the utility they bring. They are just so stackable with almost no loss. They will be some of the top dps across the whole raid if played well as their only bad damage profile is spread multi-target cleave.
Druid
Balance Druid has some of the best single target and priority damage in the game. Balance is also decent at multi-dot encounters, but not the best. It seems to be especially strong on fights such as N’zoth and Ra-den while being especially weak on fights such as Hive Mind and potentially Carapace of N’zoth depending on how important the mass amount of AOE is required. Balance Druid will probably see one or two per raid due to the really strong single target and many utility tools that come out of their kit such as tankiness,
Taifun
/
Massenumschlingung
,
Anregen
, etc.
Feral Druid is a spec that I have trouble to place just based off the fact that there are very few Ferals who play the spec at a high level. Feral Druids whenever they are playing for full single target or full AOE are in a decent spot, but sacrifice a lot of one to play for the other. They will be good on some fights such as Hivemind where you can get really good value out of
Raubtier
, and I do think that you can make Feral work if you are a high skilled player. Just know there are very limited melee spots in a raid, and Feral typically has a negative perception.
Hunter
Beast Mastery Hunter with some of the highest amount of mobility in the game is always fairly decent. In addition to their mobility, their pure single target damage is pretty solid. Typically Beast Mastery is middling in a lot of areas but not super great at one, but in Ny’alotha it looks like their single target will be pretty good. Some of the other notable things that Beast Mastery brings is an immunity and they are relatively tanky vs raid damage profiles with
Freudentaumel
and
Geistheilung
. They will be good on encounters such as Carapace of N’zoth and Ra-den.
Marksmanship Hunter is pretty lackluster in most areas, but the one area they are okay in is execute damage via
Sorgfältiges Zielen
. They are also ranged which has a pretty significant advantage. Overall though, they have really poor spread cleave and just generally low damage. This would make them not ideal for fights such as N’zoth and Carapace of N’zoth. They are probably decent for Ra-den and Maut if execute is preferred. Overall though, Marksmanship is just worse than Beast Mastery in most situations which makes them less than ideal.
Survival Hunter brings a good amount of single target damage… that is all. Their raid utility is severely lackluster, and their cleave damage is pretty poor. They excel in cleave only if you’re doing Zul style encounters where there are a lot of irrelevant mobs surrounding one boss. All-in-all they are competing for a melee spot that would require them to excel at something, and even if they did Survival has been a rework that just has not seen popularity at all.
Mage
Fire Mage with Memory of Lucid Dreams as a major essence is in an absolutely insane state when combined with
Einäschern
. Not only do they have the highest burst single target damage in the game, but the ability to cleave targets with
Meisterschaft: Entzünden
is really insane when building off one high health target. This is super advantageous for mage as a lot of fights in Ny’alotha seem like they cater to Fire Mage’s strength’s pretty heavily. All of that in conjunction with the fact that they seem as if they will scale insanely well with corrupted gear makes them an S tier dps going into Ny’alotha.
Frost Mage unfortunately competes with Fire Mage and does not bring anything unique to the table outside of hefty slows from all of their abilities +
Eisige Winde
talent. This niche could be used on Il’gynoth, but I do think that is highly unlikely and that you would rather have a Fire Mage just bombing damage into the organs. Basically, they are so low because their niche is super narrow and they are just worse than Fire. Frost is really good at 2 target cleave, but a lot of the damage profiles in Ny'alotha require priority damage that fire is better at. They are also good at Sub Rogue vs Zul style stuff, so they could be really good on Hivemind, but who knows how useful Frost will actually be.
Arcane Mage has some interesting uses and they do wild single target damage every 90 seconds because of
Arkane Macht
. The relative power of arcane is pretty unknown due to not a high volume of players, but in normal situations Arcane will just be strictly worse than fire unless you need cooldowns exactly every 90 seconds instead of every 2 minutes.
Monk
Windwalker Monk is just severely undertuned damage wise right now, and without a buff to its single target damage the class will not see much play inside of raid.
Mystische Berührung
is super nice, and if you are not getting it from other sources such as Mistweaver or Brewmaster then there is a case to bring Windwalker, but Brewmaster is Brewmaster.
Paladin
Retribution Paladin actually has some of the most insane utility in the game.
,
,
Segen des Schutzes
, and
Gottesschild
are all top tier utility spells. Ret lacks a bit in the damage department, but if their damage is remotely close it is one of those classes that having one in the raid will be really advantageous. The class unfortunately seems to be in the “below average damage” category, but they could be really good if they receive any buffs or scale better than anticipated with effects. I think Ret has the highest likelihood to be more fluid in this tier list.
Priest
Shadow Priest is receiving pretty hefty nerfs come 8.3, and I have a suspicion that they are going to be pretty poor on the first few fights whenever you do not have much gear. However, they are very very well equipped to deal with the last few fights that have spread AOE. A lot of Shadow Priest players believe the spec is dead, and that just is not true. The spec will be fine. The nerf to single target is going to hurt, but they still excel in the regions they have always excelled in. The utility of Shadow Priest is always pretty good.
Vampirumarmung
and
Massenbannung
are some unique utility abilities that are always super nice to just have available even if they’re not the most useful on that specific encounter.
Rogue
Assasination Rogue with the insane utility suite that rogues possess, it is no surprise that rogue has been on top of tier lists for such a long period of time. They have slipped into the B-Tier for a couple of reasons. Their damage is not exactly where you would want it for a melee. Their utility is pretty unmatched, but with the competitiveness of melee spots unless you are using
Mantel der Schatten
in some way rogue is just hard to justify bringing if you have equally skilled Demon Hunters, Warriors, and Frost DK. Historically your best melee players have rerolled to rogue at one point or another, so I do suspect to see a decent volume of Rogues being played even if they are not the best.
Outlaw Rogue has similar issues to Assasination except Sin is the spec you go whenever you are looking for high amounts of boss damage or single target damage in a
Vendetta
window. Outlaw however is the AOE spec doing a large amount of multi-target damage inside of
Klingenwirbel
and in addition to that they utilize
Klarer Kopf
to convert multi-target cleave into single target damage. All-in-all though even though you will likely be swapping from Outlaw to Assasination back and forth depending on the fight, I do not think one is significantly better than the other and they both are in the B tier.
Sub Rogue after the nerfs it received post-zul has been in a pretty poor state. The only niche that Subtlety has is converting mass amounts of AOE to single target damage, but beyond that they are very bad. They could be good on something like Hivemind, but beyond that then they will likely do very little damage and continue to be in a poor state.
Shaman
Elemental Shaman had a pretty big peak in Battle of Dazar’alor and Crucible of Storms due to
Eruptives Potenzial
and damage funneling. What this means is that the Elemental Shaman will convert multiple-targets into insane amount of single target damage. Unfortunately that is the only niche that Elemental Shamans fill. They will be good at fights such as Ra-Den, Carapace of N’zoth, and N’zoth, but just generally lower damage than other ranged. Good Elemental players can definitely make it worth, but their general lack of raid utility and single focused damage profile makes it rough for them to be a top tier ranged.
Enhancement Shaman, similar to elemental, lacks large amounts of raid utility and does not have a super defined niche. They do decent priority damage via
Tobende Blitze
and they may have solid DPS, but they have a super low player count that gives them a negative stigma. This historically negative stigma makes it hard to judge where Enhancement truly lands, because there are not enough players giving them representation.
Warlock
Destruction Warlocks if they can abuse
Verwüstung
has some of the most insane 2 target cleave in the game. This will make them the top DPS on fights such as Ra-den and Prophet Skitra as they can cleave down the adds while still doing decent boss damage. This is why they are ranked so high, because Destruction Warlock is going to actually be the top damage on these two fights and potentially others. If you have the ability to be flexible among other Warlock specs then you will be at a significant advantage. Warlock as a class is also abnormally tanky and gateway is always liable to do stupid things.
Affliction Warlock does good damage on single target while having some of the best AOE to single target funneling via
Unausweichliches Ableben
. Affliction is also one of the best spread cleave classes, and will be one of (if not the) the top DPS on Wrathion, Il’gynoth, Carapace of N’zoth, and N’zoth. Their self-sustain via
Blutsauger
is also really good. In addition to that, they also have normal Warlock utility such as gateway and being tanky.
Demonology Warlock’s sustained stacked AOE from
Implosion
is super nice. Implosion + the insane level of tankiness from
Seelenverbindung
is normally the reason that Demonology is played in a lot of scenarios. Demonology is not a huge slouch on single target either, which is why if you need the survivability such as Zaqul then Demonology could be a viable option. Normally though, Demonology will be picked on fights such as Hivemind where there is a lot of stacked AOE that you can benefit from.
Warrior
The niche of Arms Warrior is similar to Destruction Warlock in the sense that their 2 target cleave is some of the highest in the game.
Weitreichende Stöße
and the ability to begin their execute at 35% with
Massaker
is very useful in some situations. Arms and Destruction will be the top DPS on fights such as Ra-den and Prophet Skitra, and this is why they are in the A tier. Not because they’re the best at every scenario, but because they are the absolute best at what they do.
Fury Warrior will be the general go-to spec for Warrior player in Ny’alotha. They have high sustained single target and good sustained burst AOE if they have high uptime. Their survivability from
Blutdurst
is actually bonkers and the utility from
Anspornender Schrei
is always nice to have in some situations. Overall though, Fury is A tier because they just do wild amounts of DPS.
