Shadowlands Covenants OverviewKyrian Covenant Overview
WARNING: SHADOWLANDS STORY SPOILERS AHEAD!
Before the Kyrian Covenant Campaign
Uther is seen a few times during the
leveling storyline in Bastion
- Already a Forsworn by the time we get to Bastion, Uther is seen attempting to bring doubtful Kyrian aspirants to abandon their trials and become Forsworn. During the leveling campaign, Uther is constantly mentioned as "the vengeful one", and being guided around by a shrouded figure. Together with Lysonia, another ascended Forsworn, Uther helps with the attack on Elysian Hold during the Bastion storyline. Thanks to Uther's actions, the wards protecting the Temple of Courage are deactivated, making it possible for the forces of the House of Constructs of Maldraxxus to breach Bastion and attack the temple.
Uther is not seen again until level 60, and players pledging themselves with the Kyrian Covenant will learn more about Uther's fate.
Kyrian Covenant Campaign
Uther shows up very early on in the
, but his participation is minor until the two final chapters.
Ascension Ritual and The Spires of Ascension
Uther is first seen during the
Trial of Ascension
chapter - Right after we go through a ritual of Ascension in which the kyrian Kleia ascends and gains her wings, the Forsworn attacks Elysian Hold, destroying the Crest of Ascension and preventing the Kyrian from further ascending their trials. Uther is briefly battled with at Archon's Rise, but leaves not long after. During this battle, Devos, the Paragon of Loyalty, announces that she is the leader of the Forsworn and changes into the Paragon of Doubt.
Later on, we chase Devos attempting to take the Spires of Ascension, one of the Kyrian dungeons. During the Spires of Ascension dungeon, players will battle and defeat Devos. Through the dungeon, Devos and Kyrestia, the Archon, argue about Devos's motivations as the leader of the Forsworn. Devos reveals that peering into Uther's past life and memories is what led her to no longer believe in the Kyrian path and start the entire Forsworn campaign against the Archon.
Devos is eventually defeated in the Spires of Ascension dungeon, and the dialogue after her defeat mentions that the Archon has some reflection to do on the ways of the Kyrian, but the ongoing conflict against the Jailer is more important at the moment.
Kyrestia the Firstborne: We sacrifice because we must. Mortal burdens would only impede our sacred duty.
Devos: No. It was a mortal who exposed the folly of your edicts.
Devos: As I peered into Uther's memories, what I saw shook me to the core.
Devos: But you refused to see the truth. That the path is flawed. That we serve a lie.
Devos: And so, I listened to the Jailer's words. I learned of the great injustice you and others thrust upon him... and upon us all.
---
Kyrestia the Firstborne: Devos...
Kyrestia the Firstborne: The Jailer's schemes have torn a schism in the ranks of the kyrian. One that must be healed.
Kyrestia the Firstborne: Long have we believed that our mortal lives are burdens to be shed in the name of service. And yet, the deeds of mortals are what won the day.
Kyrestia the Firstborne: You have my gratitude. Once the Jailer lies defeated... there may be much more for the Kyrian to discuss.
After the Spires of Ascension, the next chapters of the Kyrian Covenant campaign focus on creating a new Crest of Ascension to once more allow for the Kyrian to ascend. This involves traveling to all the other zones of the Shadowlands to gain powerful artifacts to power up their new Crest. We see Uther and Lysonia again near the end of the Kyrian campaign, in chapter 8,
Closing In
.
Closing In
We start Chapter 8, "Closing In", with the quest
On Lysonia's Trail
. Since Devos is defeated in the Spires of Ascension dungeon, Lysonia becomes the defacto leader of the Forsworn. She is spotted in the Temple of Humility, with Kleia sent ahead of you to keep track of her. Kleia reports that the Temple of Humility is overrun with Forsworn forces. The Paragon of Humility, Chyrus, is cornered by Lysonia and Uther, her second-in-command.
We arrive at Voitha, the Hand of Humility, who requests us for help pushing the Forsworn back and getting to the Paragon. We help collect scrolls in
Sacred Scrolls of Humility
and free Humility Aspirants in
Succumbing to Pride
. Along the way, we find Chyrus' sword,
Compassion, Blade of Humility
and charge it by killing manifestations.
After finishing this, a conversation appears where Lysonia orders Uther to finish the Paragon of Humility. Voitha, seeing that Lysonia wants to reroute anima to spew Maw energy across the temple, asks you to destroy anima collectors in
Distorted by the Maw
and defeat Forsworn forces in
Fallen to Their Vices
.
Chyrus: You were once one of the most loyal to our ways, to our Archon. You must repel these dark thoughts. You can save your followers, save yourself!
Lysonia: Enough of these foolish games. Uther, finish this, damn you!
Chyrus: Augh!
---
Uther: The collectors have been disrupted. We are losing power!
Lysonia: It matters not, Uther. We have all that we need.
We finally get to the Paragon and confront Lysonia in
Lysonia's Plan
. Lysonia uses her empowered Maw abilities to attempt to manifest the Paragon of Humility's pride, but nothing manifests. We learn that Helya, the ruler of Helheim, is behind Lysonia's plan! As we turn in the quest to Chyrus, he mentioned that Lysonia attempted to extract pride that did not exist within him. We are then sent to the Maw to stop Lysonia in
The Power of the Maw
.
Lysonia: You are too late, Maw Walker. Soon your precious Paragon will succumb to the pride he has locked away inside.
Lysonia: Reveal your pride to us, Paragon!
Uther: Master... nothing manifested.
Chyrus: You force your view on others... your own failings... I have worked for eons to become the embodiment of my principles...
Helya: Leave your plaything, my pet. There is work to be done.
We meet with Kleia by the Ring of Transference in Oribos, who seems to worry about her upcoming journey to the Maw, as this is a journey no willing Kyrian would take.
Kleia: We just... jump in? Into the well of souls being carried to their eternal damnation, with little hope of freedom and redemption?
Kleia: Well, I guess I have my wings to save me if something goes wrong. I trust you.
---
Kleia: I have tracked Lysonia to beyond these gates. My initial scouting was... worrisome.
Kleia: Ve'nari saw a forsworn flying to Pandemonium Citadel. It must be Lysonia! I will take wing and meet you there.
After we reach Kleia at the entrance to Perdition Hold, we free captive kyrian forced into becoming Forsworn in
A Step Too Far
and kill Mawsworn forces in
Kyrian No More
.
We then finally get to confront Lysonia in
Her Will, Inflicted
. Lysonia, with the help of Helya, absorbs anima from Uther and is transformed into the new Paragon of Doubt. We manage to defeat a manifestation of Lysonia's pride, but Lysonia manages to get away from us once more.
Helya: Take his power, Lysonia. Use him to fuel your transformation.
Lysonia: You have been a useful pawn, Uther. Devos may have treasured you... but I have no further need.
Lysonia: I see my future clearly. The Archon shall fall by my blade, and Bastion will be mine!
Uther: Ahhhh!
Helya: It seems you have guests, Paragon. Do take care of them.
Lysonia: Attack!
Lysonia: You are beneath me, kyrian. I am the Paragon of Doubt, and I have little patience for your continued interruptions!
Helya: Do not fail me, Lysonia. Prove that you are worthy of your newfound power.
Lysonia: Of course, master. These minions of the Archon are nothing.
---
Lysonia: Do not think you have won! The next time we meet shall be the last.
Kleia: Come, Uther. Let me get you to safety.
Uther apologizes to us for all he's done in his time as a Forsworn in
Time to Reflect
, as we return to Bastion. As we return to the Waystone to make our way back to Bastion, Kleia and Uther talk about their similarities.
Uther: I must thank you for saving me from Lysonia's abuse. I fear that there would be nothing left of me if you had not intervened when you did.
Kleia: How do you fare, Uther?
Uther: I am in pain, but nothing I have not felt before. My wounds shall heal.
Kleia: Though we may be enemies, it would not have been right to leave you to suffer.
Uther: I believe we are quite alike, Kleia.
Kleia: Perhaps one day we can speak more about that. For now, let us escape this wretched place.
Kleia: Where do you go now, Uther? Sure you do not return to the Forsworn.
Uther: No, child. The Forsworn are not what I once thought... I doubt they ever were. I must find peace and isolation. I have much to consider.
Kleia: Some important reflection... I understand well. I hope you find what you seek.
Uther: As do I. Thank you.
The Bell Tolls
We then reunite all the Paragons in
Convene the Paragons
to discuss our next plans, as Lysonia has gathered her Forsworn in the temple that was originally Devos's, the Citadel of Loyalty.
Xandria: Why have you called us?
Thenios: Uther is missing, and Lysonia has turned to the Maw itself...
Vesiphone: Madness has truly taken her. To accept that witch Helya's offer...
Chyrus: She must pay for her hubris.
Thenios: If we are to assault Loyalty, we must strike now. Her power still grows.
Kyrestia the Firstborne: Bring everything to bear, my Paragons.
Kyrestia the Firstborne: This false movement ends this day.
We then go around Bastion in
Before the Dawn
to gather the Ascended forces to fight for the Citadel of Loyalty.
Our first stop is in the Temple of Purity where Eridia, the Hand of Purity and Lysonia's soulbind, is losing herself over the guilt of losing Lysonia to the Maw. We ring the vespers of Harmony within the Temple and restore her to recruit the Watchers.
Our next stop is the Temple of Courage, where Apolon and Artemede, the Hands of Courage, gladly send the Bearers to the Citadel of Loyalty.
We then go to the Eternal Forge, now controlled by the steward Sika, who sends the newly forged Centurions to battle.
And finally, we go to the Eonian Archives, to gather the Collectors from the Temple of Wisdom. While there, Pelagos is attempting once again to battle his doubts, and finally succeeds with our help.
Arios Riftbearer: You arrival is timely. Pelagos battles not a memory, but his own doubt.
Pelagos: Not strong enough... not... good enough...
Pelagos Shadeweaver: This is your fate. Embrace it!
Pelagos: I... CAN... NOT... DO... THIS!
Pelagos: I... no... we... can do this! I am NOT alone.
Pelagos: Together.
Pelagos Shadeweaver: This will be your final failure.
Pelagos Shadeweaver: You will never ascend! All you will ever be is Kleia's lackey!
Pelagos: You are wrong! We are stronger together. All three of us!
Pelagos Shadeweaver: You will fail at the Temple of Loyalty. You will join the Forsworn!
Pelagos Shadeweaver: Not without a fight.
---
Pelagos: I had failed that trial so many times... but not today.
Arios Riftbearer: Well done! You finally conquered your deepest doubts.
We finally reach the Court of Elation, shortly before the Citadel of Loyalty, and engage Lysonia in battle in
The Greater Good
.
Lysonia: Charging right in, are we?
Lysonia: Subtlety was never Kyrestia's strength.
Lysonia: Witness the full glory of the Forsworn!
---
Lysonia: You will not stop my destiny. Not when I am so close.
Lysonia: We may have lost the Spires, but we were not without victory.
Lysonia: Its anima is ours.
Lysonia: I will finish what Devos started. We will no longer be thralls to the Archon, blinded by 'the path'.
Lysonia: Kyrestia is right, the Shadowlands are broken. But to fix them requires strength of will... strength she lacks.
Kleia: We are with you to the end!
Pelagos: This is your last chance. Your forces lie defeated all around you, you have already lost!
Lysonia: Foolish aspirant. If you are all that is left to face me, then it is you that have lost.
---
Lysonia: Is that all you have? Show me the strength of the Archon! Seize the victory you so desperately crave!
Lysonia: I can show you your past. Give this realm a future. Abandon the Archon's lies and join me!
Kleia: I will never abandon my kin as you have! Never!
Lysonia: The day is already mine. Thanks fo your little assault, the Archon is undefended for the first time.
Lysonia: Once the Archon falls, even your precious Paragons will see the truth.
Chyrus: The Forsworn are en route to Elysian Hold! We must return at once!
With Lysonia and the rest of her Forsworn heading to Elysian Hold, Chyrus carries us there, in time for us to engage in battle with the Paragon of Doubt once more. As Lysonia starts gaining the upper hand on us and the Archon, an unexpected ally appears - Uther returns and helps us defeat Lysonia once and for all.
Lysonia: Come, Maw Walker. Bear witness to the Archon's end!
Lysonia: Kyrestia, your reign ends on this day! The Kyrian will follow a new master!
Kyrestia the Firstborne: Empty threats, ascended.
Kyrestia the Firstborne: Your master serves you only lies.
Lysonia: Such power, yet so blind. Allow me to lift the veil from your eyes, my Archon.
Lysonia: Now!
Lysonia: All the memories purged, the lives forgotten, they will have justice!
Kleia: We have become more than our pasts! Can't you see that?
Lysonia: And what has that led to? Aspirants unable to ascend. Centurions rotting in the fields!
---
Lysonia: YOU ARE ALL NOTHING BEFORE THE MAW!
Lysonia: Uther's shattered soul opened the Maw's power to me. Now I will show it to you firsthand!
Lysonia: The path you walk leads only to ruin! I will forge a new destiny for our people!
Uther: Have you lost your mind, Lysonia?
Uther: To become one with such darkness is to forsake all that it means to become Kyrian!
Uther: Justice will be done.
Uther: I will stand by the Forsworn no longer. I would rather forget my past than make this our future.
Mikanikos: Lysonia's champion is fighting against her!
---
Lysonia: Impossible... what I saw...
Kyrestia the Firstborne: Your service is complete.
Kyrestia the Firstborne: As for you, Uther...
Uther: My Archon, I ask for your mercy... I... did not understand...
After Uther begs for forgiveness, the Archon decides to keep Uther in Elysian Hold in
Kyrestia's Grace
. Uther is to be kept under constant observation, as the Archon decides what his ultimate fate will be, and as we escort Uther to his watch, he talks about the things he can still remember despite his training through the Kyrian ranks... including his death at the hands of Arthas Menethil.
I remember this particular soul... Uther. Devos brought him before us some time ago. She pleaded her case about his soul having a connection to the Maw.
She then took him under wing, ascending him before he was ready. He became her other hand alongside Lysonia, as it were.
He may proclaim a change of heart, but we shall see. Place him under guard. He may stay by the Archon's grace, but I will not take any chances with one so... broken.
---
Polemarch Adrestes: Take him to the Eternal Watch until our Archon has considered his fate further.
Uther: I too would like to understand. Please, lead the way.
Uther: My training as an Aspirant was difficult. I remembered nothing of my life.
Uther: Every time I close my eyes, I see my death. I see... him... standing before me, that cursed blade in hand...
Uther: Devos convinced me that my death was wrong. She promised me justice.
Uther: What we did to him was not justice. It was vengeance.
Uther: Lysonia was no different. I did not know that they wielded the same darkness...
After this, the Kyrian Covenant Campaign ends.
What Is In The Future for Uther?
After the Kyrian Campaign ends, Uther can be seen at Elysian Hold, under constant watch by a pair of Eternal Watchers. Although he is considered to be imprisoned, he's permitted to stay free in Elysian Hold (as long as his Eternal Watchers are by his side). Uther has no additional dialogue after the end of the campaign. Notably, Uther is now neutral to players by this point, while was unfriendly for the majority of the Kyrian campaign.
A point brought up by Polemarch Adrestes was that the reason Devos treasured Uther so much, to the point of ascending him before he was considered to be ready, was because Uther supposedly has a connection to the Maw.
Considering the fact that he can still remember his death at the hands of Arthas, coupled with the fact that Arthas could be in the Maw (this has been poked at a few times by Blizzard developers at this point, most recently by
Morgan Day on his interview with Lordmons
), adds to the theory that Arthas is, in fact, somewhere within the Maw. This likely means Uther will be a key player in whatever interaction we might have with Arthas in the future, if there will be one.
In addition,
very early in Shadowlands Alpha, a datamined model for Kyrian Uther
(commonly referenced as "Bluther" by the community") was found, which means that Uther will very likely be redeemed at some point and once again become a Kyrian proper. Considering this has not happened in the 9.0 Kyrian Campaign, this leads us to think that there will be more Covenant storyline content in the future of Shadowlands.
