Undocumented Nerfs to Codex of the First Technique Tank Trinket in Patch 9.2.5

The tank trinket Codex of the First Technique from Tazavesh Streets of Wonder has received some undocumented changes in Patch 9.2.5 which greatly reduce the effectiveness of this trinket. We break down what the changes are and go over whether or not this trinket is worth using this patch.
Codex Undocumented Changes in Patch 9.2.5
The tank-only trinket
Kodex der ersten Technik
, dropping off So'azmi in Tazavesh (and in Mythic+ from the Streets of Wonder wing), has had a pretty rough time on live, at least when it comes to hotfixes. Between the changes designed to stop it from pulling through walls, to stop reflecting certain types of damage and, in general, to stop breaking keys, it has seen its fair share of changes.
Patch 9.2.5 contained an undocumented change to its underlying behavior which are as follows:
The effect tooltip on
Kodex der ersten Technik
was corrected and no longer includes an incorrect multiplication by versatility percentage. Instead, it is now correctly (1 + vers%)
Undocumented
:
Kodex der ersten Technik
no longer reflects Brewmaster's Stagger, friendly fire effects such as
Wogende Manöver
and other things that would normally be used to pull through obstacles in Mythic+
Undocumented
: The damage reduction part of the trinket is now capped at 1946 * (1 + vers%) modified by healing amplification effects, per individual hit, for
any
Kodex der ersten Technik
of any item level. This used to be unlimited.
The first undocumented change is a welcome addition for most players, as
Kodex der ersten Technik
would reflect friendly fire damage to your current target rather than fizzing out. This meant that you could ninjapull enemies from miles away just by having a friendly fire or environmental effect on you, and a
Kodex der ersten Technik
proc. As necrolords, this effectively meant you had to be careful at all times when playing Marileth. Whilst this will undoubtedly change a couple of things in high keys, it is a welcome change for most.
The second of the two undocumented changes is the one we will talk about in detail this article, as it is the most impactful. Effectively, this means that the
eye-poppingly large absorption values
you could see in Patch 9.2 are a thing of the past. It also means that the proc from
Kodex der ersten Technik
is no longer an effective 10% damage reduction against anything, and merely a ~3k damage reduction for most cases and most tanks.
Oddly enough, probably the weirdest part of this change is that the cap on the absorption effect does not increase with the item level of
Kodex der ersten Technik
, making it an even worse candidate for Valor upgrades than before, and possibly the only trinket in-game that functions this way.
The Impact of the Nerf
The impact of the second undocumented change is visible in logs. It effectively puts yet another nail in the coffin of this trinket for virtually any use case by severely reducing its offensive and defensive potential.
Defensively, effectively, at best, the cap on this trinket drastically reduced its strength on large hits. Previously, a
Kodex der ersten Technik
proc absorbing a Jailer's melee would shave off 9-10k of the hit , but now, it will only absorb 1946 * (1 + vers%), which will rarely be more than 4k for just about anyone once you include effects such as
Vampirblut
.
Offensively, this effect is also mirrored, and since the cap is a lot lower than before, the damage portion of the effect follows suit. The larger the hits, the bigger the nerf.
These changes impact a trinket that was already difficult to justify due to its primary stat budget being spent solely on Stamina, thus leading to an inherent damage reduction and throughput loss for most tanks (Primary stats - strength or agility - directly translate into armor, critical strike rating and parry/dodge for most tanks), and relegate it even further into a niche that only a handful of players worldwide thrive in. In raids, the only place where this trinket can still sort of shine is Mythic Rygelon, as long as you are
tanking the boss for a majority of the time
.
In keys, it is very likely that this trinket was already weak for you, and this nerf reduces the pool of players able to draw a direct benefit from
Kodex der ersten Technik
even further. As usual, we recommend checking with your class discord to make sure, but in practice, there is even less of a reason to farm this trinket.
Undocumented Changes and You
These changes were discovered independently by the following players:
Meyra of Fel Hammer and Nomeratur of Skyhold spent time quantifying the effect and behaviour of the new cap
Sinzhu spotted the stagger change, and I spotted the
Wogende Manöver
change
However, the important part is that this is not the first time
Kodex der ersten Technik
gets changed without a mention in the patch notes. When patch 9.1.5 launched, the
Kodex der ersten Technik
tooltip was altered from a cap value of 4925 to a cap value of 4925 * vers%, thus causing panic as this reduced the tooltip value of the absorb significantly. There was no note on patch notes for this change, and the behaviour of the tooltip was not accurately reflecting the behaviour in-game.
This second set of undocumented changes, this time, function as an actual, sizeable nerf to a trinket players will have likely picked from their Vault or farmed in Streets. Nobody knows if this nerf is intended, whether it will stay, or any of the sort - and there's no real indication of the change in-game other than when analysing logs. It would be great to get some insight into the multiple parts of this change, particularly the static item level cap, since this removes a significant reason to upgrade this trinket.
