In an interview conducted by
Blizzard Watch
with Lead Game Designer Morgan Day and Game Producer Shani Edwards, they learned that Tyrande will play a large role in Ardenweald, one of the new Zones and Covenants in Shadowlands.

Tyrande has been MIA for quite some time after her transformation into the Night Warrior, with many players disappointed she didn't show up in Nazjatar and face off against Azshara. She briefly resurfaces in 8.3 PTR Datamining sounding very upset with Anduin's decision to broker a peace with the Horde, as Sylvanas is still out there free.
Tyrande is also curious why Elune abandoned her children, and as we've learned with the Shadowlands expansion reveal, all the newly-deceased souls are being fed to the Maw, instead of going to the Arbiter and being distributed across all Covenants, which has in turn created instability. This imbalance has been going on for quite some time, including the Burning of Teldrassil, which could explain why Elune's powers seemed dimmer and the Night Elves felt abandoned.
Here's the original quote from Shani Edwards:
“We’re gonna learn more about Tyrande’s story. Obviously, she is still very upset about what happened to her people. That’s going to lead her to Ardenweald. She’s gonna get some answers to some questions, and there’s gonna be some stuff coming with her that’s too spoiler-y to talk about but there’s more Tyrande…. All I can say is she has a pretty big story moment in Ardenweald. Very big role also.”
Ardenweald, to recap, is an enchanted magical forest, considered to be a darkened reflection of the Emerald Dream in Azeroth. Ardenweald and the Night Fae Covenant believe that the journey in the Shadowlands is not the end, and focus on resting their souls to prepare for rebirth and continue their purpose in the world. Cenarius is associated with the zone, and there are hints that Ysera may end up here as well, as we last saw her walking towards the Remnant of the Void flower in the cleansed Emerald Nightmare raid.
With this brief interview excerpt, it's likely that Tyrande will get some answers as to Elune's recent behavior. Perhaps we'll even learn more about Elune's true identity and place in the cosmos, as Shadowlands reveals another mysterious figure, the Jailer, that in retrospect was aligned against Elune. Way back at the start of Battle for Azeroth, the novella "A Good War" hinted that Sylvanas was partnered with a force opposed to Elune:
Elune had intervened. Perhaps she had even stayed Saurfang's killing blow. And she wouldn't be the only force beyond the Alliance to oppose Sylvanas' true objective.
We've seen Sylvanas make quick work of both Saurfang and Bolvar recently due to her enhanced powers as the Jailer receives more souls, so it may be ambitious for Tyrande to take down Sylvanas. However, as Tyrande survived the Night Warrior's ritual, deemed worthy by Elune to wield her dark power, perhaps Elune has chosen Tyrande as her vessel to face Sylvanas--once the goddess is no longer weakened.
Tyrande after the Fourth War
Tyrande after the Fourth War is upset with Anduin's truce and refuses to sign any peace treaty, unless it's written in the blood of Sylvanas. While we've covered many NPC dialogue snippets following the war, most of them do not address the plight of the Night Elves.
NPCs in Boralus
are skeptical about peace, while the Night Elf sentinels are both weary of war and hoping Tyrande tracks down Sylvanas. On the Horde side,
Zekhan
and the
inhabitants of Orgrimmar
are focused on rebuilding trust among the Horde and welcoming Sylvanas loyalists back to the fold. The mood is one of reconciliation instead of taking action against Sylvanas and discussing future leadership.
Now through Patch 8.3 datamining, we see Tyrande's reaction to Anduin and she's not happy at all:
Anduin: The armistice is signed. At long last, the Fourth War is over.
Tyrande: No. Not while the Black Moon still cries out for vengeance. Not until the Horde has answered for its treachery.
Anduin: Further bloodshed will not bring back the fallen. We must renew our hope and forge a future for those who survived.
Tyrande: And when the next warchief musters an army, will hope save you if it is Stormwind that burns?
Anduin: I know it's difficult to trust, but there are signs of change within the Horde. In place of a warchief, there is now a council led by Baine, Thrall, and the others. I believe they can--
Tyrande: Your faith is naive, lion son. I will sign no treaty unless it is written in the Banshee's blood!
Anduin: Tyrande!
Genn: There is truth in her words, Anduin. Peace may be on the table today, but soon enough the Horde will sound their drums and march for war.
Genn: When that day comes, no scrap of parchment will hold them back.
Anduin: The path to peace will not be easy, and not all will choose to walk it. But this is the only way to build a better future. I believe it will work, Genn.
Shandris: You spoke harshly to King Anduin, Tyrande. The kaldorei can ill afford to shun the Alliance. They have provided aid and comfort to us in these dark times.
Tyrande: The young king is foolish to trust our enemies. Harsh words should be the least of his fears.
Shandris: The Banshee Queen no longer leads the Horde. Those who do seem more inclined toward peace than war.
Tyrande: If the wolf is rabid, it matters not who rides it. Sooner or later, the beast will bare its fangs.
Shandris: You are dearest to my heart, Tyrande. I beg you, let go of the Black Moon's rage and embrace the mother's light once again. I could not bear to lose you to darkness.
Tyrande: Know this. My hunger for vengeance will not be sated so long as Sylvanas Windrunner remains free--and until I know why Elune abandoned her children.
Shandris: Tyrande! Do not say such--
Tyrande: I will tarry no longer in this city of men. Let us leave for the boughs of Nordrassil.
Tyrande: From there we will dispatch the Sentinels to every corner of Azeroth. Let no one rest until the Banshee is found!
One of our
Expansion Speculation Articles
covered the role Tyrande and Elune could play in the expansion, as well as hints surrounding the identity of Elune--she may be tied to the Titans, Azeroth, Well of Eternity, and even the Naaru. With Blizzard acknowleding the
importance of the cosmology chart in future expansions
and Elune's mysterious absence from the chart (as well as the Jailer!) we hope to learn more about her power in Ardenweald.
