Returning Character Cameo in 11.2.7 Sylvanas Questline

While questing with Sylvanas and Arator in patch 11.2.7, you might have missed the sneaky return of a character not seen since the end of Battle for Azeroth!

Return of the Blightcaller
During our quests with Sylvanas in the Maw, players might have missed the background appearance of
Nathanos Blightcaller.
This NPC shows up during the
Entschlossenheit
quest, hidden behind a nearby rock while Sylvanas speaks to the player. This appearance can be finnicky, only appearing in certain circumstances. He has no dialogue or involvement in the quest, and is merely a silent observer.
Is Nathanos Alive Now?
The is cameo immediately brings up one pertinent question:
is Nathanos alive?
Unlike the other spirits we have seen in the Maw, Nathanos is fully corporeal here, with his exact model from Battle for Azeroth. Physical bodies in the Shadowlands aren't uncommon, as seen in Maldraxxus, Bastion, and Revendreth, but all of those zones create
new
bodies for mortal souls to inhabit. By contrast, this seems to be the very same look Nathanos sported in undeath.
It also brings up another question: if this is Nathanos,
who is the Familiar Soul?
The obvious assumption of a spirit indefinitely following Sylvanas through the Maw was that it was her lost love, but it seems this might be someone else entirely.
Arator says: Another spirit?
Sylvanas Windrunner says: A silent one. He follows me and then departs, only to return again later.
The simplest answer could be that this is just a mistake. Perhaps this NPC was meant to have a ghostly effect that didn't get implemented, and Nathanos is still dead after all. Given the fickle spawning tendencies of this NPC, it could even be a mistake that it spawns at all, and is a remnant of an older iteration of this questline.
Either way, it does not seem like Sylvanas is aware of Nathanos' presence near her. Dead or alive, it seems likely that we will revisit the Maw at some point in the future to see these two reconnect.
