I'll give you the short response, with a danger of sounding annoying and bitter:
Just because it doesn't matter to you, it matters to some. Looks actually matters to some people.

Because red cars go faster and... wait I had a point here... *shuffles pages*

Ahh here it is. If it has ZERO ground breaking impact upon your playing and you care nothing for it why question it. Will you next question every culture in the world that has no relevance to you but it isn't your cup of tea? (maybe a touch harsh but its more or less the same principle.)

I am not really interested in what my gear looks like, i'm interesting how much DPS it can give me, or how much armor it can provide me so I can work towards the items that do look good. So why bother! more content is more appealing to me and dungeons. (yes I know we are going to get them).

Than I ask.
Why not?

If for no other reason..it's getting the player out of the cities and actually doing something. The patch may be quite some time away from being implemented and players are already doing raids long dormant. This can provide months of up playtime as people are actively trying to get complete sets. Not just for their mains but alts too.
let's hope that the enthusiasm that is being shown by the overall population will convince Blizz of eventually implementing total gear customization ala guild tabard.

I agree that there are a lot of people looking forward to this. Some people because they like vanity items in general. Some because they're proud of their level 60 Naxx or Season 2 Arena gear that isn't available anymore. Some (like me) just don't like the clunky look of the later tiers of armor, and prefer the Vanilla stuff (yes, sometimes females can like the shorts and mid-riff armor too). Some people want to be able to screw with their opponents in the arena, by not letting them know who has how much resilience at a glance. There are a lot of people who will like this for a lot of different reasons.

If you ever ask why, think,
why not?
If you can give no substantial answer, within lies the truth.

Then don't use the transmogrifyers; there you go, problem solved. And the only reason that people are talking more about this then the new dungeons and the raid is that other then the fact that the Raid is Deathwing's, and one of the dungeons is War of the Ancients, we don't know anything else about them. Once they are on the PTR, you'll see threads about them popping up.

Have you ever been on the official forums? Granted it's cesspool, but since T3 gear came out players have been
begging
for this. Lately it's reached a fever pitch. So unless you speak for 100% of the user base (and news flash, you only speak for yourself), just because you don't want it doesn't mean other players don't want it.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go farm the purple judgement gear. Looks better on a Draenei in my opinion than the red one.

Also, it becomes very annoying how ALL classes are seen in one of 2 sets: Max Raiding Tier or Max PvP armor. After this, cities will be colourful again, with variety everywhere.
I wouldn't count on exactly that, due to certain sets being very popular.
I've always preferred lawbringer to Judgement.

As a girl playing WoW, I'm personally tired of how recent gear has gone overboard in terms of "covering up" the female character form.
I liked my plate bikinis, because know it's not realistic, but hey, I'm also flinging lava from my hands and fighting dragons.
Not all women want their characters to be covered up like nuns, nor do all of them want to have it all hang out, and with transmogrification, I can finally mix it up and wear my Wrathfin armor set that's been gathering dust in my bank since BC.
