YOUR PLAYING FROM AN USB PORT?
sorry if this has nothing to do with the topic.
But playing media(not photos or documents) direct from the external drive via usb is not good for your external drive. It could destroy it since usb is not builded for that kind of stuff. I would recommend you to move your world of warcraft folder to your hard drive ASAP.
If of course you don't know exactly what you are doing.
Not even kind of.
USB is an interface, not a drive type. SATA, IDE, SCSI, etc. They're interfaces. A USB Hard Drive is *more* than fine to run WoW off of. Stop spreading horrible lies. (FYI: I'm a PC Technician by day, and I run WoW of a USB HDD. It's fine.)
Then i have been tricked *blush*
As was said earlier by TKitch a USB drive is highly acceptable for running many of these type apps. I use it this way to ensure that when I travel for work ( a regular occurance) I do not have to worry about all my add-on updates. the only thing that changes is the resolution and I have it .bat file to handle the swap of those files, the main issue here is the home desktop is 1400X1050 and the *cough* work *cough* laptop is 1024X768.
The only other issue is remembering my G13 keypad.

This is probably fine for a game like WoW. However, for all the people that don't know, I just wanted to caution them about trying this with more demanding games. SATA II is much faster than USB 2.0. Using USB will not damage anything, but you will get better performance from SATA
when that performance is needed

I recently got a new PC, Windows 7, installing wow was an absolute pain in the ass! I spend a week reading forum posts and solutions of why it wouldn't install correctly.
In the meantime I was using a copied directory from the old pc, but it was often crashing going to certain areas because of read errors.(this mind is with doing all the run as XP, run as admin stuff too, I took every option and combination of options.)
So one day I find out, because it is Windows 7 and I have 8GB RAM...that was the problem, too much RAM to install properly. So I removed 4gb, started the DL/installed package thingie, installed, patched, done...Reinstalled the RAM after, No problems since.

I keep an updated version on my laptop and use a data transfer cable to transfer it to a PC. Usually takes less than an hour.

Hence why I use a USB drive, I regularly have to leave the office, drive home, pack a bag and drive to the airport to jump on a plane. I do not have time to transfer and ensure that I can make it to the airport in time.

Use the Cd's.
More specifically, use the Wrath DVD, as that will bring you to 3.0, and end in shorter patching time.
Indeed, install WoW, TBC, Wrath and
then
start patching.

Don't do that; Wrath overwrites the Vanilla and TBC stuff heh; faster to just use the DVD lol, and then, like I said on the first page, go to bed while all the patches download.

I have the WoW program files on my iPod and then I just plug it into any PC anywhere I go and it runs fine.

The new(ish) downloader installs the newest version as you download, and I tend to download it faster than the game can install. So for me, the fastest way to install WoW is to download it.
