Video cards are designed to be versitile, so emeral is correct, there is no "optimal" resolution for a video card. It's the monitor that determines what to use. Basically, just go through the resolutions in WOW's video setup, until you find the one you like best and fits your screen.

Your friend was mistaken or explaining it wrong. Like RE said, in different terms: LCDs have what is called a "native resolution". In that resolution, each little dot on the screen that you can see if you jam your face right up next to it is representing a single pixel. The native resolution is the number of dots across by the number of dots up and down. Some people are bothered more or less than others by LCDs not being in native -- I'm certainly the type who can't stand it when it's not in native. That's simply aesthetic; though, running in lower resolutions will, of course, increase your framerate at the expense of quality.
Video cards have a maximum output resolution. That's about it. As I said above, lower resolutions will run faster than higher ones, but there is no magical one that works better than all the rest.

Drivers... download them and update.
Most hardware these days is not released with the most up to date drivers available. If you update these, you may find that you will have several options when it comes to resolution size.
