How does a mage kite mobs?

I'm doing The Captain's Chest in Stranglethorn Vale and I read in the comment that it was possible to kite Gorlash all the way to the guards in Booty Bay, so I'd thought I'd try to complete the quest that way.

Didn't work as planned. I basically started off by firing off a lvl 1 Frostbolt, turn around and run, then reapplying as needed. Died shortly after since i think the chilled duration is not long enough. Tried again with a lvl 8 frostbolt for longer duration, but still got thrashed. Tried mixing in with Frost Nova and Cone of Cold, but those didn't work as well either,

So, what's the secret to kiting mobs? Can anyone help?

Well If it is a mob ure only going to kite so someone else kan kill spam frostbolt rank 1.
Fast casttime and U'll lsow them down. Use blink if they come close and have mana gems ready.

So, in other words, if I spec anything other than frost, there's no way I can kite mobs?

That's your problem. Never Turn to cast. When kiting a mob you should always be strafing, so all you do is: stop, cast, continue to run, instead of: stop, turn, cast, turn, run

I used to do those stone guardians in Un'goro on my mage when he was PoM/Pyro at 60 with R1 Frostbolt just fine. You just have to be aware of the chill duration and not waste any movement time by having to turn slowly or anything.

I can't even imagine how easy kiting would be with all the slowing talents in the Frost tree...

Should not be hard just pratice on easier mobs.

Natur enemy cast bar.

Shows duration on chill effects
Shows duration on counterspell and sheep
Shows enemies' cooldowns (Great for PvP)
Shows how long enemies have on each buff/spell (ie. Iceblock, beastial wrath)

And much more.

I highly reccomend it.
