Unacceptable, because you're being paid to do a job, and being hungover prevents you from doing your job properly (see the people admitting to making mistakes while hungover).

I nearly got my arm torn off in a machine because I was hungover.

I've never worked at a job before, so I might be saying this with blind eyes, but I'm not sure why it would be unacceptable.
I guess I consider it akin to going to work after pulling an all-nighter.
I've also never been drunk before...so yeah...
There are times where I am less tired having < 5 hours of sleep than I am having around 8-10. I'm not sure why, but I guess it works for me (Not that I like having that little sleep and having to do stuff but hey.)

It is unaceptable, and anyone saying otherwise is completely.... well, insert your own word here.
Paid to work means you do it to the best of your ability, but your work will also probably affect someone else or your company.
Bin man is hungover - maybe misses a bin, that family might get rats.
Police officer hungover? Hope not....
Office worker. Misses a deadline, company misses a report, a sector reacts incorrectly and loses money perhaps.
And so on :)
I work hungover all the time.

I just recently started a pharmacist job in a hospital so I doubt I'll be coming into work hungover or anything like that soon lol. My old job though was working on a automotive assembly line, people would be hungover all the damn time and even drinking any chance they get, and oddly enough though everyone did their jobs right and there were really no mess ups, but when youre paying some hick $30/hr to assemble a van they usually can focus on the job at hand and wont let the hangover bother them much.

What automotive company did you work for, exactly? I'd like to make sure that any car I buy in the future hasn't been assembled by people who might have been hungover, or by your implication, possibly drunk on the job. :P

I have my doubts about people coming to work drunk all the time. I work at Toyota and trust me, people there do drink, but it is very rare for anyone to come to work drunk. (there are those that have, but it's like once every 2-3 months and they're not too hungover, just sick-like). Anyone working in a auto factor can tell you a lot of those jobs are too dangerous to be drunk at. There are forklifts everywhere, tuggers, automated carriers. Team Leaders running all over the place, Group Leaders walking up and down the line. Assistant Managers always watching to make sure everything is up to quality.
The cars move on a tack or a overhanging hook system that doesn't care if you're in front of it or not. The cars will stop suddenly because someone 10 positions up from you had a problem and stopped the line and you're not gonna know when it'll start back up. Sometimes, when the line restarts, the car will jump a few inches. If you're drunk, those few inches could cause you a lot of harm.
Yes, people do come to work drunk in assembly lines, but it is very rare, because it is dangerous there. Very dangerous. I'm shocked at some of jobs people do while sober there!

Depends a lot on what job.
If it's something where you actually need to concentrate and be ready to react at any moment it's unacceptable.
If you'r doing something simpler or more relaxed (Picking up garbage or whatever), I guess it's fine.
In NYC, more garbage men are killed each year then cops. Why? Because when the garbage truck stops to pick up trash, drivers behind the truck become impatient and speed around the garbage truck and hit the garbage man as they walk around the truck with trash cans in hand.
It is too dangerous for garbage men to be drunk on the job.
Also, there's the possibility of changing the trash in a building that there is a liquid in the bag and it leaks out (happens 1-4 bags, so quite often) and the liquid could cause you to fall. If you're drunk, you're more likely to fall.
I can't see any job that it is safe to be drunk at. Maybe a porn star, maybe if you've scored the roll as Professor Xavier in the new X-man movie and you'll not be walking around any. Most jobs require skill or has a level of danger to them.
