I'm trying to create a new character in a US realm. However, I haven't found a way to input the letter "ä". Is there a way?
Thank you.

I'm fairly certain you can also "CTRL + V" (paste) it directly into the naming box.

However, it would be kind of awesome if you didn't use special characters. They're annoying. Particularly when trying to form groups but being unable to invite said person without awkward workarounds.

Blizz gave the ability to use special characters for users that have those in their native language. There's also a finite number of names, and if your intended name is unavailable because some jackass thought it good to reserve that name for a level 1 rogue they never use, but you don't want to add letters or randomize the name so it ends up something you'd rather not use, then using a character that looks the same but has a different ID is perfect.
If you fail at inviting someone because of that reason, then the one being invited is better off not grouping with you.

What I usually do when someone has a different letter in their name I will simply /who them by spelling out the name normally in english and pretty much 100% of the time it brings up the person youre actually look fors little bit of info when you /who someone, then just right click their name and invite them. So instead of figuring out how to spell ᵴḦḁḋṏẅḒṐṷḈḧḚ just type shadow@#$%^&

Umlauts (ä, ö, ü) are used extensively in German and other Germanic languages (except, oddly, English). However, Blizzard's "official" stance is that "non-standard" characters (characters that are not available under the default keymap) are inappropriate on North American realms since they are not widely used by the native speakers of the region.

...
If someone in the raid asks me to invite there friend called 'Cärl', they'll only get an invite if we're really desperate for that class.
...
Or, you know, you could give/ask for raid assist and do it faster... but I wouldn't expect that from people like
you
.
That's why I'm glad I don't have to rely on pugs to get my raiding fix; but the few times I've joined pugs I've never had anyone say something like
ur neim suk u hard to inv
, and I have
Æ
as the first letter for my main characters. I'm on a pretty bad server, but at least they don't bish and moan excessively about such trivial matters.

Yeah, I'll throw in a quick reiteration of "You aren't supposed to use them on NA realms (but Blizzard has bigger problems to deal with so they won't stop you)"
Even without special characters, when my friends are in a PuG and ask if I want to come, they /ra "I've got a <role>" then tell me who to /w for an invite. The only exception is if the raid leader uses special characters, then they'll just /ra Inv <my char> and hope I get one.
*I* don't moan about them because I can just switch keyboard languages and start typing them without alt codes. Also, I have my computer set up for multiple keyboard languages because I work off and on with learning Esperanto and keeping my German from getting too dusty.
I remember an MMO first person shooter called PlanetSide, where you'd constantly have people trying to recruit you to parties / guilds, quite a few players preferred to play solo, so would have names like 'RamboIlllIIlIllI' (that's a mix of capital i's and lower case L's) to make it difficult for people to contact them.
There are a few people on my server that started their names with capital "i" so that their names would like they started with lowercase "L." We also have a guy whose name consists solely of a "w" and however many "mÆ" will fit. Quite annoying to see him talk in Trade...especially if he's guild spamming since the guild name fits the motif (without special characters though).

In my opinion, if someone already has a toon named Animosity then pick a different name. I can't tell you how many times I've met Lëgòlâs in-game, and I have no idea if it was the same Legolas who *!@#ed me off last week.
