As i recall reading several times about high bracket mages who have tested this build in arena, it is just a bad build overall. In normal battlegrounds where you probably wont always have someone chasing after you and can get some spells off it works great. In arenas, you'll need all the resil/cc/save-your-@$$ abilities that you can get as there are many full stealth teams and rogues will eat you up. If you feel that pom/pyro is really for you and you want to try it in arena, the general tactic i believe is to cc at the begining of the fight and dps your opponent down to around 40% hp and then hit your IWIN button to finish the job. Be careful of when you use this though as bad timing can lead to a rogue cloaking it off and laughing at you or another mage just iceblocking. Pom/pyro is not meant to be used as an attempt at an insta-death. It was back in the day but has had its effectiveness reduced severely. Many things can go wrong here but decently effective up into the 1650-1750 brackets if used well.
I've used 33/28/0 up past 2050 in 5's and over 1800 this season in 2's which was about 4-5 hours worth of work (which is all the arena i've done since start of S3). Most people are too afraid to try a spec that isn't frost due to frost high amount of survivabilty. For 2's though best bet is to run witha disc priest and prepare for long fights. For me i ran into alot of Warlock/Druid Warrior/ Healer X Shaman/ Warlock or Warrior which ran for 15-45 minutes. Basically make sure you have a decent amount of food and water made.
Once the fight begins and you are against warrior/druid or warrior/priest your best bet is to start beating on the warrior force the healer to come out and play and coordinate your pom pyro macro with your priests fear so you have the best possible chance to burn down the warrior. Once the warrior hits about 40% use your pom pyro macro just as or just after your priest fears off the heals. Generally by then they have burnt their trinkets and can't get out of the fear if you need more time just poly it. If that fails this is where the long match begins. If the warrior is still up beating on you let the dots wear off CC it to allow your priest to go drink control it once you priest has around 80% mana its your turn to go drink mage more food/mana gem. When your CD's are back up you try again until the warrior is dead.
But that is just one example of what you can do against ONE team in 2's they are generally long matches against other DPS/healer teams and short matches against double dps because you can curbstomp them something hardcore.
